Computers have IP addresses, so unless someone wants to use two internet IP connections and pay for it to have a sock, it's going to be obvious to the people who run the website. They know your IP address and what software you have on your computer. I've been on political sites that won't allow proxy software on your computer that hides your IP address, whether it's activated or not.
