It is about time that someone in government realizes the harm DADT is doing to the ranks of our military.
I will sit back on this for a while and see where it goes, but I don't expect much from some of you.

Well... back in the early 90's, I thought DADT was a good policy based on where we were as a society on homosexuality. I think today, America is much more accepting of the gay lifestyle, so maybe it's time to do away with that policy.
I really have no Idea of the attitudes and mindset of todays military personnel, so I could be wrong here... it's just my opinion as an outsider.

Now here is the issue that will make socialism look like a walk in the park.
Most don't even see it coming.
It will hurt a lot of people.
Not just gays or lesbians.

News flash: most gays in the military are not like the stereotypical image of a homosexual you have in your head. The gay people who would join would be joining out of love for their country and not to sit in the barracks and scream cat calls to others.
Again.. broad-stroked brush you paint with.

But in saying that, if a gay were to enter the military and be that retarded to hit on other guys in the unit and carry on with behavior that would easily effect the integrity of the small unit, the system currently in place would charge him/her with sexual harassment and he would be dealt with accordingly.
But in looking back at the two homosexual marines that I knew while I served, including one who was open about it, as long as they proved they were an asset to the mission it never surfaced as an issue.

Thank you. It takes an amount of maturity to join the military in the first place. I am thankful for each and every homosexual serving in the military today, knowing good and well their careers could be ruined by some far right lunatic who doesn't think queers should have the opportunity to fight for their country as well.

Can you explain that further, Im not sure exactly what you are saying.
A subject like socialism rocks the very foundation of right-wing elements of our society. They are literally scared to death. There is proof right here at DCJ. Read their desperate words. Now, you throw same-sex love at them, and their entire existence could fall apart. This from the people who scream "love one another."
The acceptance of the diversity of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community goes against everything these conservative bigots believe. Men with men! Women with women! Their church is against it! Their belief system is challenged, and they are already on overload from President Obama trouncing McCain.
So the right wingers are sensitive. Fuck'em, gay and lesbian lives are being ruined and lost because of DADT. I've been using the phrase, "I am as mad as hell, and I am not going to take this any more," a lot lately. DADT goes miles beyond that in anger, fear, and even TERROR. GLBT motivation and emotion are out of the ball park, and conservatives are out of touch with the whole thing.
I think President Obama senses this, and is trying to keep a lid on things. When push comes to shove Obama will be there for GLBT. I think it will be like 1960s Selma, Alabama combined with the French Revolution when the soldiers turned on the king. We could be talking violence.
Now, I am not a gay guy, but I have spent a lot of time in politics, including GLBT politics. The group to keep an eye on National Stonewall Democrats. 2009 is going to be a long hot summer.

Being gay and joining the service is a courageous act in itself.
But exspecting those you serve with to be understanding is dangerous ground.
Dont ask dont tell is probably still good policy at this time.

I agree, why do they have to flaunt it, how many times to you see two gays all over each other just to put on a show instead of acting like they have some sense. When they begin act normal, maybe more people will see them as normal.

You are asked on the "application" whether or not you've engaged in gay activity, drug useage, etc. Lots of questions. Any gay who checks "nope, not me, never" on the app., then enlists (on a lie) is serviung under a fraudulent enlistment.
Not much personal integrity when you have to lie to get something.
Not sure what the attitude is in the military now - but back in my Day, once we discovered liars, cheats, thiefs, snitches, etc. onboard ship - they were blanket partied.

And I don't think anyone who has to resort to blanket parties to exert their authority has one ounce of integrity in the first place.

You know you got to love this SeniorChief! Hell, I'm straight, and I already think he is an ass-hole. Hey SeniorChief! Try a little thing called GOOGLE, the truth might appear right before your eyes!
When do people know that they are gay?
There is no simple answer to this question, as it varies from person to person. Deciding you are gay often happens gradually, it may not be something you can initially put a name to, and it can feel very confusing.
During research carried out with young gay men in the UK, the young men interviewed described a set of feelings which they gradually realised made them 'different' in some way, feelings they thought maybe every teenage boy has.
“I thought, well, this is just the phase bit. Sooner or later I'm going to start finding women attractive. I never did. As I became more attracted to men, and I still wasn't getting attracted to women, I thought, shit, you're gay. And it was really quite a shock when it hit me.”
Eventually all people who are gay realise that not only are they sexually attracted to members of the same sex, but that this attraction is not transitional. This realisation could come at any time during their lives. Some may keep their sexuality a secret, while others may decide to come out.
Is homosexuality a phase young people go through?
For some people yes, and for others no. Some people do not have their first homosexual feelings or experience until they are well into adulthood. In a survey on sexual feelings carried out in Britain, nearly the same number of women reported that their first homosexual experience had happened in their twenties as did in their thirties, forties or fifties. But there is some evidence that for some people homosexual experiences may well be part of a transitional or experimental phase in their youth. This is hardly surprising given that adolescence is a period of change in which many people find who they are and what they want for themselves in adult life. This kind of behaviour is perfectly normal.

You can't catch gayness. I'm sorry, you just can't, so if a gay is around you...you're not going to switch teams. Also, a lot of gays aren't the flaming hollywood stereotypical gay...so they're not going to try and make you listen to Liza Minelli records.
There's nothing wrong with a gay wanting to serve his country, be in the military, fight and die for the freedoms we have.
Everyone is willing to say we're the "land of the free" but what they really want to say is, "Land of the free (as long as it follows my view of the world). Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
Personally I kind of like the whole "land of the free" thing and I'm mature enough to let people live their lives. If they perform their tasks professionally, if they conduct themselves professionally, if they don't force their sexual preferences on others...what's the big deal?

Why? If a gay person excels at his job, doesn't cause any trouble, what's the big deal? It seems to me it has less to do with the gay person and more to do with people that are uncomfortable around gay people.
My girlfriend has a step daughter which she helped raise, she was nothing but trouble growing up, she got her act together, joined the military, and is lesbian. Now, why would anyone want to deny another American the ability to serve their country if they perform the tasks at hand with honor?

You put it best yourself above, why should a large majority of people that have served faithfully and excelled be made to feel uncomfortable for the few while performing what is sometimes a high pressure job? Gays say they can't change their feelings so why should someone else be forced to change their feelings on this subject and be uncomfortable at their career that they can't simply quit?

Why should they feel uncomfortable?
In life you're going to have to interact with others that might not share you're personal take on life. Do we start segregating groups in the military for any number of biases?
Women? What about them, should they be allowed in the military? What about people that hate blacks? Should we have all white units to accommodate them? What about Christian vs. Muslim? I mean religion causes plenty of conflicts but people have to accept other faiths.
Or should people just learn to be mature and deal with it?

You have a very serious issue here, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
Lives are being ruined and people are dying because of DADT.

You seriously believe I checked "no" to never having had sex with a man??:lmao2: because I am a closet queer like you are?
Hell man, that's your department.
You're coming across as a typical run of the mill Liberal faggot.
Hiding behind, "I served."
Tell us - Lucy - how'd it go the day you walked into Top's office and pronounced your gayness???
We're you greeted with warm, open arms??
I'm not hiding behind shit dude. If you remember I didn't tell you guys about my service until 2-3 weeks after my first post. I don't have to make my name military related and shoot up a picture of me in uniform as my avatar to establish a foundation to stand on in these forums.
But you go ahead and lean back and laugh at the most recent of many fag jokes you spew on these threads. Feel free to keep resorting to immature jabs to my character and service. I could not give two fucks what some salty senior enlisted ever thinks of me or my service. I did not follow you around throughout your career, so I will never make assumptions on your career. If you want to keep making assumptions or elaborate stories on mine, that is all on you.
I will always be grateful for your service to your country. As a fellow veteran, I know the sacrifices you made every day up until your retirement. To serve 20 years is a feat very few accomplish, you must have done something right. We may disagree most of the time, but you will never see me degrade you as a veteran or your service.

Here are the facts from Wikipedia. Other than a few third world countries, gays and lesbians are serving in the world's militaries. The United States is dragging up the rear because of a few senile generals, and the usual, ignorant, conservative, Republican bunch. We need to take our country back from these bums!
Sexual orientation and military service
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The militaries of the world have a variety of responses to gays, lesbians and bisexuals. Most Western military forces have now removed policies excluding sexual minority members; of the 26 countries that participate militarily in NATO, more than 20 permit open lesbians, gays, or bisexuals to serve; of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, two (United Kingdom and France) do so. The other three generally do not: China bans gays and lesbians outright, Russia excludes all gays and lesbians during peacetime but allows some gay men to serve in wartime (see below), and the United States (see Don't ask, don't tell) technically permits gays and lesbians to serve, but only in secrecy and celibacy.
Policies and attitudes toward gay and lesbian personnel in the military vary widely internationally. Several countries allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly and have granted them the same rights and privileges as their heterosexual counterparts. Many countries neither ban nor support gay and lesbian service members, and a small group continue to ban homosexual personnel outright.

2.7 Italy
2.8 The Netherlands

2.10 Philippines
2.11 Romania
2.12 United Kingdom
2.13 Switzerland
2.14 Uruguay
[edit] Argentina
As of 2009, the Argentine government has officially ended the ban on gays in the military. [5]
[edit] Australia
The Commonwealth of Australia policies are to allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly.[6] Attention has been drawn to dual American–Australian citizen Norbert Basil MacLean III, who served in the United States Navy from 1989–1994 but was court-martialled on what he claims were trumped-up charges due to his sexuality and harassment from a superior officer. MacLean's harassment complaint against a superior officer for a wrongful demotion in rank was eventually found meritorious by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and he was reinstated to his previous rank. MacLean's case pre-dates the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. Had he served in the Royal Australian Navy he would have been permitted to serve as an openly gay man. MacLean's case in the United States has resulted in the introduction of the Equal Justice for Our Military Act of 2009, HR 569 in the 111th Congress. HR 569 relates to granting the Supreme Court of the United States the ability to review American court-martial cases once those cases have concluded review by the military courts. On September 12, 2008, the Los Angeles Daily Journal reported in a front page article that MacLean has applied to join the Royal Australian Air Force.[7]
[edit] Bermuda
The Bermuda Regiment does not discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation, as it is formed by random lottery-style conscription. Officially, members of the Regiment are prohibited from discriminating against or harassing gay soldiers;[8] such activities, however, are tolerated by officers, to the extent that one conscript described the Regiment as "the most homophobic environment that exists".[9]
[edit] Canada
In 1976, the Canadian Forces issued Canadian Forces Administrative Order (CFAO) 19-20, which allowed members suspected of being homosexual to be investigated and then subsequently released. This order was repealed in 1992, after a challenge by then CF Member Michelle Douglas, thereby allowing gay, lesbian and transgendered people to serve in the Canadian Forces free from harassment and discrimination.
A series of provincial and territorial Supreme Court decisions beginning in 2003 ruled in favour of the legality of gay marriage, and a national law to that effect was passed by Canada's parliament in 2005 by the Paul Martin Liberal government. In May 2005, Canada's first military gay wedding took place at Nova Scotia's Canadian Forces Base Greenwood. Officials described the ceremony as low-key but touching. A similar wedding has since taken place between two male Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers.
Today, the Canadian Forces recognizes same-sex marital and common-law unions, and affords them the same benefits offered to all married or common-law serving members.
During the 2008 Toronto Pride Parade, ten members of the Canadian Forces marched for the first time. One month later, twelve gay and straight members of the Canadian Forces marched in Vancouver's Pride Parade. Lt(N) Steven Churm said, "The message to the public is that the Canadian Forces is an employer of choice. We have employment opportunities that people can pursue, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation. For our own members, they can be proud of what they're doing and also be proud of who they are."[10]
[edit] Germany
The German Bundeswehr ruled that it is forbidden to discriminate based on sexual orientation. The "Working Committee of Homosexual Employees in the Military Forces"[11] is the representation of interests for homosexuals in the armed forces. Homosexual German soldiers can live openly in civil unions in Germany.[12]
[edit] Israel
Israel Defense Forces policies allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly and without discrimination or harassment due to actual or perceived sexual orientation.[13] This was put into effect in 1993 after an IDF reserves officer testified before the Knesset claiming that his rank had been revoked, and that he had been barred from researching sensitive topics in military intelligence, solely because of his sexual identity. Homosexuals serve openly in the military, including special units, without any discrimination.[14][15] Moreover, gays in the IDF have additional rights, such as the right to take a shower alone if they want to. According to a University of California, Santa Barbara study,[16] a brigadier general stated that Israelis show a "great tolerance" for gay soldiers. Consul David Saranga at the Israeli Consulate in New York, who was interviewed by the St. Petersburg Times, said, “It's a non-issue. You can be a very good officer, a creative one, a brave one, and be gay at the same time.”[17]
[edit] Italy
The Armed Forces of Italy cannot deny men or women of homosexual orientation to serve within their ranks, as this would be a violation of Constitutional rights. However, much prejudice about homosexuals still exists within the Italian armed forces, so that they generally decide to hide their sexual orientation.[citation needed] In the past, homosexual conduct was grounds for being discharged from the Italian armed forces for reason of insanity, and feigning homosexuality was a very popular way to obtain medical rejection and skip draft.[citation needed]
[edit] The Netherlands
In 1974, the Netherlands was the first country to ban discrimination against gays in the military.[18]
[edit] New Zealand
In New Zealand it is legal for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons to serve in the military. [19][20]
[edit] Philippines
The Philippine government have officially ended, as of 2009, the ban on gays in the military. [21]
[edit] Romania
Gays are allowed to serve openly in the Romanian army. According to the Ministry of Defence's recruitment policy, "it is the right of every Romanian citizen to take part in the military structures of our country, regardless of their sexual orientation."[22]
[edit] United Kingdom
The United Kingdom's policy is to allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly, and discrimination on a sexual orientation basis is forbidden.[23] It is also forbidden for someone to pressure LGBT people to come out. All personnel are subject to the same "no-touching" rules.
[edit] Switzerland
Switzerland's military policies also allow for gay men and lesbians to serve openly without discrimination or harassment due to actual or perceived sexual orientation.[24]
[edit] Uruguay
Gays were prohibited from serving in the Uruguayan armed forces under the 1973-1985 military dictatorship, however this prohibition was lifted in 2009 when a new decree was signed by Defence Minister Jose Bayardi which provided that that sexual orientation would no longer be considered a reason to prevent people from entering the armed forces[25].

You can't catch gayness. I'm sorry, you just can't, so if a gay is around you...you're not going to switch teams. Also, a lot of gays aren't the flaming hollywood stereotypical gay...so they're not going to try and make you listen to Liza Minelli records.
I can not read what wayers57 is saying because I put him on ignore. But from what I can see he is asking a lot of questions about being gay. This thread is DADT, not a forum for a discussion of gay life, (though I might add that I got a kick out of Mr.Blue's comments above).
All I am saying is that I think wayers57 should Google his way into some gay porn and we should get back on the DADT topic. By the way I am straight, my brother is gay, and I put this pick in because I thought he represented this post well, and is handsome.
