Hey guys,
As some of you may know, I have been making trips up to Massachusetts to help my mother get into a nursing home, beacause of Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinson's. I just got a call this morning that her heart had stopped; and she never made it to the hospital.
I have to drive up there, to make the arrangements and attend the funeral. So I'll be gone for a few days. Not sure exactly how long. I just hope everybody will be good to each other while I'm away. I'm PM-ing SirMoby to let him know.
See you guys when I get back.

OMG sweetheart I am so sorry to hear that :( If it's any consolation, she really is in a better place. My grandmother had alzheimers for 14 years and it was a sad thing to see...
God bless and many prayers to you and yours. If you ever need anything, feel free to PM me!

So sorry to hear of your loss. One of the worst days of my life when I lost my mom. You'll probably never again find anyone who is so completely in your corner. May God ease your pain.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts, guys and gals.
My mother was a real hot shit; with a heart of gold. Unfortunately all her long-term insurance policies had lapsed, and the couple I got started are either contested, or didn't have much on them, because of the short time between their start and her death. So we had a simple ceremony and a cremation (her last wishes when she was coherent). Mum came back with us; and is sitting on my dresser. I'll be buying an urn for her sometime this week.
My daughter and ex-wife came up with me - my ex, myself and mum all worked together at her last job, back in the eighties. They were good company for the road trip; and great to lean on for moral support.
Anyway, I hope everything's been going okay while I've been gone. My ex and daughter brought their laptops with WiFi, but I chose not to divert my attention from the atmosphere by getting into board politics. As it stands, I'm a little out of the loop on most current news as well. We stayed at her niece's house with HD satellite cable; but between my ex being a Red Sox fan and the four kids, I saw very little news. Swine Flu and Specter are about as much as I know on current events.
But I'm glad to be back - until I see the carnage at work tomorrow, in my absence.

I've been preparing myself for the past year, seeing how rapidly her symptoms progressed. A year ago she was just forgetting things and hoarding books, allowing me to progressively get her more in-home healthcare, with the onset of Alzheimer's. A few months ago she was requiring constant observation to take medication; and losing her ability to swallow. In January we were forced to place her in a nursing home, with her being unable to walk and speak. And in the end it was nothing but uncontrollable shaking from the Parkinson's. I can have peace about it all now, knowing that she's no longer suffering.
She was an awesome mother; and touched the lives of many people - a real take-charge organizer, devoting all her time toward volunteer work for the other residents in her elderly housing complex. Contributing to the newsletter and fighting with housing over the Christmas parties and resident quality of life issues. Until two years ago, she was the one trusted with the key to lock the security door every night. Bertha was a force to be reckoned with, when it came to defending the underdog.
Sorry to go on about her, but she was a very special woman; whom I always looked up to and admired. And I guess I'm her legacy; as my daughter, whom I'm very proud of, is mine.
