Obama did not order an assault, or anything of that sort.

Standing orders were to follow through with negotiations, to their non-violent end. And only to take offensive action if the captain's life was in imminent danger.

The captain of the Bainbridge saw the pirates emerge with an AK-47 pointed at captain Phillips' head and felt he was in imminent danger of being killed, and ordered the sharpshooters to take them out.

So, if this hadn't happened, we'd still be negotiating, per orders of Barry.
