Parker: Back on Uncle Sam's Plantation

Six years ago I wrote a book called "Uncle Sam's Plantation." I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it.

I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas. A poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.

I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps.

A vast sea of perhaps well intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960's, that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty.

A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from "How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"

Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems. The kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.

The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.

Through God's grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.

I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, passed by a Republican congress and signed into law by a Democrat president. A few years after enactment, welfare roles were down fifty percent.

I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth producing American capitalism.

But, incredibly, we are going in the opposite direction.

Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism.

Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, "Thank you, Suh."

Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash.

There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.

Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.

In an op-ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Mr. Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short term economic stimulus.

"This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending-it's a strategy for America's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, health care, and education."

Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place "with unprecedented transparency and accountability."

Yes, sir, we heard it from Jimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education.

Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 -- The War on Poverty -- which President Johnson said "...does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty."

Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single parent homes and out of wedlock births.

It's not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama's invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.

Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?

Being as I am relatively new to this site, I have to ask if it has always been this way. I was on another site for a while and the common thread there was that the conservatives were able to discuss issues in a civil manner using logic and facts to make their point. However there were a few liberals that would show up and start calling everyone that disagreed with their positions any name in the book but would ALWAYS fail to put together a coherent thought.

There must be a liberal play book out there somewhere that I am not familiar with that tells those that choose to follow it to re-direct the topic when facts are introduced, blame everything on the last Republican, start calling people names as a last resort. Almost every liberal I have encountered on any political forum seems to follow this playbook. I was really hoping it would be different here.

Then you haven't been paying attention.

Most of the posters on this site are right of center to far-right-wing and several are in attack mode all the time.

It's curious at best how you managed to miss that.

Perhaps you are of the opinion that those liberals you're talking about should just be quiet and take whatever abuse right-wingers care to dish out .. but I am not of that opinion.

It's ironic listening to someone on the right whining about attacks when we've gone through years of listening to mindless republican talk-radio inspired attacks.

Were you upset about attacks when republicans were doing it or are you only upset about it now?

There is no mystery why conservatives are rapidly dwindling in this country, nor is there any mystery why conservatives were no factor in the last elections or why the battle for conservative "leadership" comes down to the joke that is Sarah Palin and the disgraced Newt Gingrich. :)

No point in explaining the difference to you between a "Marxist" and a democratic socialist. If I drew it in crayon it would still be over your head.

We know WHY conservatives did not do well. It is the American Idol culture in this country at the moment. Too many people have had it too good for too long. They feel that just because a guy shows up and is able to read from a teleprompter, he sounds intelligent and they MUST vote for him. I attribute it to the ever declining educational level of todays high school graduates. They are not ABLE to think past a headline.

My question however has been, show me HOW conservative policies are WRONG? Just because a majority of brain dead idiots think so? Not buying it. It is YOU that have failed to grasp the concept of the debate. You keep saying that conservatism is dying and to that your are problaby somewhat correct. But you CANNOT defend Socialism other than to say you like it and so do a lot of the brain dead lemmings that continue to vote for it.

You are the only person in this thread who is unable to debate in an intelligent manner, in fact all I see is baseless biased attacks and silly stooge ranting from you. You are the one who is dwindling here, hell your sorry ass can't even address the article. You are the problem.

Your low classed attacks are as common as you stupid opinions of others. You can't address the articles because you are so full of hate and it shines through thread after the thread. Grow up and debate like an American.

We happen to want this site to succeed, we don't want people like you destroying the site just so you can rage your hatred on others!!! Read the articles and repsond in a respectful manner pertaining to the article or go the fuck away!!!

fyi, I really don't consider you a racist, I did what I did to make point I thought you ask me why I said what I said, but instead you choose the same path as these librerals who'd rather attack and hate than debate. The black history of the liberal media is all true, they did use quotes to stimatize blacks after people like me challenged the liberal meida to stop showing signs that messaged the hatred of blacks. Today liberals are still haters, I'm sure many are still racist or racialist but now they slither down to attack anyone whom they disagree with and they can't even lie worth a crap. Its hillarious to watch liberals hate on the masses and think they are intellectuals too!!!
