Iraqi Reporter Throws Shoe At President George W Bush
Funny. This never happened at a Saddam palace before?

While President Bush was speaking in one Saddam's palaces today an Iraqi man threw a shoe at him. The man was dragged from the room screaming.

The man did not have his tongue cut out, did not have his arms broke and was not thown off a roof .

Now that's success.

President Bush joked about the incident and the press conference continued.
The AP (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081214/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_24) has more on the incident:

A man threw his shoes at President George W. Bush and was dragged away by security officials during the president's farewell trip to Iraq.

The incident occurred as Bush was appearing Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bush ducked and wasn't hit by either shoe. Bush joked, saying that all he can report was that it was a size 10 shoe. then calmly took questions.

Other Iraqi journalists apologized for the incident.
Reuters (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081214/pl_nm/us_iraq_bush_shoe_1) reported:

The shoes missed their target about 15 feet away. One sailed over Bush's head as he stood next to Maliki and smacked into the wall behind him. Bush smiled uncomfortably and Maliki looked strained.

"It doesn't bother me," Bush said, urging everyone to calm down as a ruckus broke out in the conference room.

When asked about the incident shortly after, Bush made light of it. "I didn't feel the least threatened by it," he said.

Other Iraqi journalists apologized on behalf of their colleague, a television journalist.

Did anyone ever determine why he decided to throw his shoes at Bush? Specifically?

The guy was an Egyptian TV journalist; and I'm sure it would reflect on his network and their ability, or his, to be welcomed to future news briefings; if the guy can't control himself.

This is a little known custom for the display of respect and affection to foreign dignitaries by ancient Egyptian Royalty. :winkwink:

In The Middle East showing someone the bottoms of your feet is a sign of amazing disrespect being that it should be the dirtiest part of the body. I assume, I don't know since no one threw shoes at me when I was there, that it was the biggest insult of anything that he could throw.

It's the desert and it gets 130 degrees in some areas. It's an area of old traditions and something tells me that 1,000s of years ago they didn't wear any thing under those robes.

Let me get this straight, 130 degrees in some areas + shoes, hmm, the stink from that would possibly be the weapons of mass destruction they were looking for...

I am really surprised a U.S. Secret Service agent didn't shoot this idiot.

But, I am sure he got a nice ass-whooping off camera.

Had he done this in the U.S., he'd still be in jail, charged with attempted assault plus a whole lot more, awaiting a fair trial.

But, since it happened in Iraq, he'll probably be released after a few hours of intense torture. They'll probably cut one of his toes off.

Gotta love that Muslim way of life !

Futhermore.....

This whole "shoe incident" shows just how successful the United States has been in Iraq.

If this "journalist" had thrown a shoe at Saddam Hussein, he would have immediately been dragged outside and executed!!

Look how far Iraqi's have come!!

God Bless President Bush for making it all happen !

The Iraqi reporter has become an international hero overnight.
Hopefully this will start a new trend: whenever Bush appears
in public, people will throw shoes at him.

Among Commies, Liberals and Muslims, yes. I agree.

The rest of us view it as attempted assault.

And fear not - Bush will not be appearing in public after Jan. 20. He'll be retired.

The buck stops with Barry Hussein then.

Happy Monday!

Saddam was the leader of Iraq. This guy didn't throw a show at any Iraqi politician. He threw a shoe at the Commander and Chief of the invading force that is occupying Iraq.

Can you understand the difference?

If Bush was welcomed as a liberator then this guy would have been dragged outside and executed. Instead I think it shows that the Bush administration was wrong again and failed in something else.

Betty, until there are at least charges brought up on George W. Bush for being a mass murder or war criminal in the USA then I'll ask again that you refrain from such accusations.

OK?

I got a 10 day ban, without warning, for what you just did. It was called "poisoning the well".

I made the mistake of comparing Obama to Mao Tse Tung, Vladimir Lenin and Adolf Hitler.

I have since been re-educated, and now recognize Obama for the great leader that he is.

Luckily, soon Bush's clever plan to give Iraq to Iran will be fullfilled, and shoes, and Iraq's oil fields, will be China's problem.

So we won't have to be worried about shoe attacks.

Bill as much as you might not like it we are getting that oil and our corporations are going to profit off it for many years. There you have it Bill. The mass confusion that mindless supporters have about the oil industry. Have you ever seen it more clearly?

He called them "our corporations" thinking that these corporations are solely owned by the American people simply because some of them are headquartered here. He doesn't understand how publicly traded companies work.

He doesn't understand that even if Exxon gets the only they're not going to sell it to the American people at a discount. he doesn't understand that the oil may never make it to our shores for refining. He doesn't understand that Exxon having the oil does nothing for the American people.

He just doesn't get it but I bet he listens to someone employed by Murdoch or Mays. They all seem to have this same HUGE misunderstanding of how things work.

Funny these corporations don't even pay taxes, so we dont benefit from it at all. Crazy how these people think that this was something other than a corporate war effort...true capitilism would have made the corporations hire and train their own armies to take of Iraq...

Actually, I think Bush was just giving Americans a little payback for 9/11 by wasting some diaper-heads.
Unfortunately that might be the case and certainly why many Americans supported the war. Over 4,000 US soldiers killed, over $700 Billion dollars wasted, generations of hatred built upon the war seems like a pretty high price to kill people that had nothing to do with 9/11 in any way.
