View Full Version : What Is "Main Stream" or "Real" America?

I spent most of my life in Northern Virginia, inside the beltway, in an area that provided most of Virginia with the bulk of tax revenue and also an area that was very diverse. Because of this I always seem to imagine the main stream America as living in heavily populated areas, with a diverse set of ethnic backgrounds. I just don't picture mainstream as the crack house areas in Washington but I don't picture it as the rural areas in southern and western Virginia either.

My prejudice tends to believe that both areas are out of touch for different reasons. The mainstream happens to be suburban, educated and of diverse backgrounds.

When hear "Main Stream" or "Real" America, what do you see?

I see the working class. I see those that either spend time or don't with their families. I see those that make excuses for whatever woes they may have, rather than owning up and claiming responsibility for where they are at in their lives. I see hard workers. I see slackers that let others do the work. I see people that take a stand and also those that remain silent. I see the haves and then the have nots. I see the young and also the old. I see the really intelligent ones, while also eyeing the ultra stupid. I see those that have morals and those that have none. I see an average Joe on one side of the street, while looking at a homeless bum on the other. There's a farmer in overalls and a snob in a suit.

It's all in how you define "mainstream Amrerica." America is virtually made up of "mainstream people." The ultra rich are not mainstream. They are in a minority. And the rest of us are the majority.

I grew up in Massachusetts with mostly blue collar type people. There were 4 black kids and 2 asian and maybe 1 indian and middle eastern kid in my graduating class. So I grew up with mostly white people, didn't really know anything about other cultures until I moved to Maryland, and then Los Angeles. I go back home these days and its much much more diverse than when i was living there. So today, I see America much the same way, as a group of diverse educated people that are all trying to live together. My generation the racial boundaries don't mean nearly as much. My friends are black, Indian, Asian, white, middle eastern. It doesn't matter, as long as you are good people.

Actually Sir Moby, I'm living in Annapolis right now, and can't stand it. I think I'll be moving out to NOVA in the next year. Probably Arlington or at the very least Georgetown.

Well, I kind of have a unique upbringing. I was raised in an upper middle class area, but I was poor. I won't get into the details of that, but I was raised mostly by my mom and grandfather.

My grandfather gave me my sensibility of how a man should be, how family should be, and how you have to live up to your responsibilities. You have to own your mistakes, you have to acknowledge your mistakes and make them right if you can.

So, Main Stream or Real America, centers around the family. How you work for your family, how you raise your children, how you take care of your loved ones. When you appreciate and understand those struggles, it doesn't matter if you got someone in the ghetto or on park avenue, because they have a common denominator of wanting something better for their family and their future generations.

Annapolis is nice if you're a sailor but the conversations do become a bit boring.

Arlington is great. If I didn't have a 4 year old I'd live in Old Town Alexandria though. :) You sound single.

"Real America" doesn't exist.

It's "Surreal America" ... with everybody in their own separate universe.

Indian women are the sexiest, IMO.

Very exotic. With beautiful golden brown skin and deep soulfull eyes.

The most beautiful women in the world are mature American ladies.

They can go from an evening gown to a pair of Levi's and still outshine any woman in the world.

She can stand by her man without shame, but still tell him to "Straighten Up" when he's acting like a fool.

Many of the younger ones destroy their feminine qualities with trashy attitudes and a street-hooker's wardrobe.

I fear they are loosing their unique American qualities. I see girls as young as 13 years old going to school dressed like whores.

To me, Indian women are either very good looking or not at all. There's not too much in between with them for me. Same thing with Black girls.

How did you all go from talking about mainstream America to only yapping about the various nationalities of women? Easy to see where the male mind always ends up at. :banghead:

Okay, so Redheads, I don't care if it's dyed or natural, and women that look goth but don't act goth.

You havent noticed? TV, dude helps with the short attention spans so anything on top only has a shot at a short stay. when you add in over exposure to the equation turns into the jungle with insects. if u dont get that any species ants, termites what evr the hell else, fungases foucus in on one species the stronger it gets the better chance the fungas hits and order is restored

hair color never mattered to me, i think im an overall judger.

Well, I've been on these "female conversations," and they certainly haven't been more perverted and detailed than those of guys. The point was, that while yapping about an issue, you were all easily sidetracked to that of sexy women. Good grief! When it comes to real issues it seems you men have short attention spans but are long on perversions.

I think the "attention" and energy would be better spent on something other than sexual inunedos and drooling. God, you guys are like a bunch of little school boys that still pee their pants when a cute little girl looks at them.

Hey, stop picking on us, at least we found an issue we can all talk about peacefully. :D

Dear Binky,

The idea behind this thread was to get people to think a little about their own beliefs. I think it's always good for people to rationalize and think about their beliefs. Some were able to express an opinion on an intellectual level, some on a primal level and some on both.

I noticed that you didn't offer any thoughts on the intellectual part of this thread. ;)
