Wal-Mart Worker Trampled In Friday Sale Stampede Happy Holidays

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

The cause of death was pending.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said.

Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

A Wal-Mart worker on Long Island, N.Y., died after being trampled by customers who broke through the doors early Friday, and other workers were trampled as they tried to rescue the man. At least four other people, including a woman who was eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals.
Fights and injuries occurred elsewhere at other stores operated by Wal-Mart, the nation's leading discount chain, which is one of the few retailers thriving in the current economy.

Meanwhile, two men at a crowded Toys "R" Us in Palm Desert, Calif., pulled guns and shot each other to death after women with them brawled, witnesses said. The company released a statement late Friday saying the deaths were related to a personal dispute and not Black Friday shopping.
Many other retailers appeared to have fewer customers than usual the day after Thanksgiving, typically one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Merchants call it Black Friday because in the past, it was when many retailers went into the black, or turned profitable, for the year.

Frankie, I've seen this kind of ridiculous behavior when it's mostly white shoppers. They showed a segment on the FOX channel just this morning of a bunch of WHITE shoppers grabbing and fighting over a stupid X-Box that was the last one.

Years ago, when Furby's were the hot ticket, WalMart announced that consumers could get one, (no choice of which color) they had them in a pile at the front of the store AND you had to line up and stay in line in order to get one. There was none of this stampeding and fighting over this item. It was civilized.

And I personally think these stores should implement this policy for any of the limited items.

I think "Black Friday" takes the Joy out of Christmas. I do nearly all my shopping online in November, I don't even read the ads. And when the packages start getting delivered it's like Christmas each time. It's much more fun. And these days, a lot safer.

All stores should be required to have security guards in place to block the doors until employees can unlock the doors and get out of the way. Employees have been trampled by nutjob selfish shoppers too. People should be required to enter the stores in a single file line, no running at the entrance. They could install the turnstile devices that only allow one person at a time, they are cheaper than a lawsuit.

I can give you a first hand perspective of the area, because this is where I live after all. The area itself is typical suburbia, the houses are fairly expensive, the taxes are really high, and it's generally a safe area to live. Yes, for New York, it's almost conservative and you saw plenty of McCain/Palin supporters here.

Right on the outskirts of the town they built a rather large shopping mall called Green Acres, and the Walmart in question is behind that shopping mall. It more or less is the shopping hub for the towns near it, some areas are predominantly black, lower income, etc.

Now, with that said, this isn't a black / white issue. It's more an issue of stupidity which seems to be running rampant everywhere.

I've never understood these types of events where people rush into a store, I didn't understand it when I was a kid and parents went nearly to a riot level trying to get cabbage patch kids (yes I'm dating myself here) or the riots over any other stupid "must have" item.

I also don't understand that mad melee that happens with those bridal dress things where they have a bunch of crazy white women running for a wedding dress.

All I can say is, thank god for internet shopping, as I don't do stores because I generally don't trust the masses to act civil and rational when some blue plate special (wait, what's the walmart thing again?) happens.
