"Iran's political and military leaders are sounding suddenly wary of President-elect Barack Obama.

"People who put on a mask of friendship, but with the objective of betrayal, and who enter from the angle of negotiations without preconditions, are more dangerous," Hossein Taeb, deputy commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Wednesday, according to the semiofficial Mehr News Agency. ".

"The power holders in the new American government are trying to regain their lost influence with a tactical change in their foreign diplomacy. They are shifting from a hard conflict to a soft attack," Taeb said.

For Iran's leaders, the only state of affairs worse than poor relations with the United States may be improved relations. The Shiite Muslim clerics who rule the country came to power after ousting Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, a U.S.-backed autocrat, in their 1979 Islamic revolution. Opposition to the United States, long vilified as the "great Satan" here in Friday sermons, remains one of the main pillars of Iranian politics.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent Obama a congratulatory letter last week, but by Wednesday his welcoming tone had dissipated. "It doesn't make any difference for us who comes and who goes," he said in a speech in the northern town of Sari. "It's their actions which are studied by the Iranian and world nations."

On Wednesday, Iran test-fired a two-stage, solid-fuel rocket, Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammed Najjar announced on state television. He said the missile had a range of 1,200 miles -- meaning that it could reach Israel and U.S. targets in the Middle East.

They want to see if they can terrorize Obama into doing everything that they want. Bin Laden and Ahmadinejad had Bush doing everything that they wanted but I think Obama is a bit smarter.

I don't entirely believe that's the case.

I think Obama changes the face of America to one that might be more palatable to the Middle East. If you have a country driven by theocracy, hatred, it's a lot easier to rally support with someone like Bush in office as compared to someone like Obama.

Their core of strength is very much Americans acting like the stereotypical American and Obama throws a curveball. I think Iran almost needs to force a conflict and have Obama respond so they can hold onto power within their own country. If they don't, Obama, America, starts looking less and less evil and we win a major ideological war.

Exactly. Could we have done a better job in making Iran wealthy with the high oil prices? Could Ahmadinejad have gained so much power with out the USA being played as the evil nation with things like Gitmo?

Exactly and that's bad for Ahmadinejad and peace would have seen a different President in 2004 here as well. Much of what we've done has made other leaders stronger while making America weaker. What more could bin Laden, his followers and our adversaries want?

The thing is though, Obama, even though he presents a different face, will have to respond to a direct threat to our interests in the Middle East. I think he might be able to drum up more world support than Bush could, but regardless expect the U.S. to be steeped in a ME conflict.

It'll probably start with conflicts in places like Lebanon pestering Israel or the ultimate win win situation for Iran, have Israel attack them in some preemptive strike, the U.S. backing Israel, what better way to paint Obama as evil as have him supporting Israel "aggression"...there's so many fun scenarios with this, lol.
