WASHINGTON – Former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president Sunday, describing the Illinois senator as a "transformational figure."
Powell said both Obama and Republican John McCain are qualified to be commander in chief. But he said Obama is better suited to handle the nation's economic problems as well as help improve its standing in the world.
"It isn't easy for me to disappoint Sen. McCain in the way that I have this morning, and I regret that," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
"But I firmly believe that at this point in America's history, we need a president that will not just continue, even with a new face and with the changes and with some maverick aspects, who will not just continue basically the policies that we have been following in recent years," Powell said.
"I think we need a transformational figure. I think we need a president who is a generational change and that's why I'm supporting Barack Obama, not out of any lack of respect or admiration for Sen. John McCain."
Powell's endorsement has been much anticipated because he is a Republican with impressive foreign policy credentials. At the same time, he is a black man and Obama would be the nation's first black president.
Powell said he was cognizant of the racial aspect of his endorsement, but said that was not the dominant factor in his decision. If it was, he said, he would have made the endorsement months ago.
Powell served as secretary of state in President Bush's first term, and helped make the case before the United Nations for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. A retired general, Powell also was the nation's top military commander, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during the first Gulf war under President George H.W. Bush.
McCain said he disagreed that Obama is qualified to be president.
"We have a respectful disagreement," McCain, interviewed on "Fox News Sunday," said of Powell.
Powell said McCain has been a good friend for 25 years. But Powell expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain's campaign, as well as in his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee.
"I don't believe she's ready to be president of the United States," Powell said.
Powell said he does not plan to campaign for Obama.

Is it just me,
or do others find the notion of either McCain or Palin in the oval office as somewhat disturbing?
Do you feel as i do, significantly more at ease with Obama or Biden in the presidency?
I could tease Powell with the thought his past assessments about things, such as the evidence of WMDs in Iraq, has failed to be perfect.
The question is, has this experience improved his skepticism & judgment?
Powell was one of those in the Bush whitehouse most difficult to convince of the Iraq mis-adventure, certainly to his credit.
I welcome his endorsement of Obama, because of the disaster i think McCain & his supporters would wreck upon this nation.
Because Powell has withheld his view until now implies that it carries a bit more gravitas than the more impulsive & inflamed portions of the population, which has to include myself.
While we each have to make up our own minds, his, quite different from my own perspective & experience does have a bit of persuasive effect.

No, he's still a Neocon, just one who has a glimmer of intelligence in him. Unlike the rest of you.

Obama is not the victim of ideological insanity which most neocons are.

Actually, if you check back a bit, Powell's conservative views were in question at least as far back as 2004.

neocon's sanity has always been in question by anyone paying any attention.
all rhetoric,
zero substance.

Conservative or Neoconservative? From a political stand point the two have almost nothing in common and many GOP supporters don't seem to know the differences which are very important.
Remember the Neoconservatives in the administration today want open borders, big government, huge spending and nation building. Those aren't conservative values.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081019/ap_on_el_pr/powell_3Powell was never a conservative...He was simply being used by the right for being black and military during the first Gulf War to promote an agenda, and he took long term advantage of the situation. It got him to where he is today. Prominent in the circle of world politics and power. The fact that he played conservative for so long but never endorsed anyone for president should of indicated his true political leanings. Most Obama supporters are blind to his extreme leftist marxist leanings or they wouldn't otherwise support him but Powell has been around and knows Obama's beliefs well and supports him with total awareness. This indicates he is in full agreement with his marxist politics. Powell is a sleeper, who has now awakened.

I don't think anyone is questioning BO's intelligence. However, he has a lot of creepy people that he's been in bed with. We're told early in life "that we're known by the company we keep." Well, he's been keeping company with people that would love to destroy America.:(

Powell was never a neocon, but he served his country despite the administration's aims. He was trusting that he wouldn't be sold up the river with that vial at the UN, and he was burned.
Basically, he was the best soldier the administration had, and they exploited him. Now that he's no longer indispensible, Republicans are shitting all over him.
It's pretty amazing to watch them go Lord Of The Flies on one another.

What a perfect example of the ignorance and hatred in America. Where do you live Hog? I know some psychology professors that would love to study your emotional responses and how the media has programmed you.

The idea that Powell never endorsed a candidate before is pretty dumb, he endorsed McCain in the 2000 primaries and he spoke at the RNC after that and clearly endorsed the Bush/Cheney ticket:
Ladies and gentlemen, we stand at an historic turning point in world history. For the first time in almost a century, America does not face an enemy fueled by an ideology claiming to be superior to our beloved system of democracy, free enterprise and the rights of men and women to pursue their individual destinies. We defeated communism and fascism on the field of battle and on the field of ideas. The sick nations that still pursue the 'fools gold' of tyranny and weapons of mass destruction will soon find themselves left behind in the dust bin of history. They are investing in their own demise as surely as the Soviet Union did by investing in the Red Army.
Today, we are the most powerful nation on earth -- militarily, economically, by any measure. We are that rarity in history -- a trusted nation whose power is tempered by compassion, whose leadership is earned by example and whose foreign affairs will be guided by common interests and common sense. The world is watching to see if all this power and wealth is just for the well to do, the comfortable, the privileged.
Or are we a nation that can make our dream real for all Americans, so that all share in what we have been given by a generous God. We must show to the rest of the world the beauty and potential of democracy.
Our greatest strength is the power of our example -- to be that shining city on the hill that Ronald Reagan spoke of and that the world looks up to.
To continue to be that place, we must all work together, we must reach down, back and across, all of us coming together to show the world what our American family can do.
That is the challenge. This is the time.
And in Governor George Bush we have the leader.

They also showed part of Powell's RNC 2000 speech on Meet The Press yesterday, which I guess you missed because it's on a communist network.

[QUOTE=asroc]Powell was never a neoconQUOTE]
That's the smartest thing you have ever said.
I don't know what all the fuss is all about.
This really isn't a shock in any way.
Powell was never a conservitive, and he has indeed served under a lot of admins, but he never really was conservitive...

Powell's clearly a conservative Republican:

I just said he wasn't a neocon. If you can't tell the difference, that's very telling.
Here's a hint: neocons are pretty liberal in a lot of ways.

You're confusing conservatism and neoconservatism again. The two have common ground in church but very little common ground in government. Why do sheep not understand this?

His programming doesn't allow him to understand.
