WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A majority of Americans predict the economic crisis is going to get worse and most are not confident that either U.S. presidential candidate will be able to fix it, according to a USA Today/Gallup Poll published on Tuesday.
Eighty-four percent of those polled predict the economy is going to get worse, even as the U.S. government makes a new push for faster relief to a paralyzed banking system.
A record 91 percent of respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States, the poll found.
Sixty-three percent said they are not confident that Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, if elected, can end the economic crisis. Thirty-one percent say they are confident the Arizona senator and his economic advisers would be able to turn things around.
On the same question, 50 percent said they were confident Democratic hopeful Barack Obama could fix the economy, compared with 44 percent who lacked confidence in the Illinois senator in this area.
With three weeks before the November 4 election, both candidates are focusing on the economic situation.
McCain planned to unveil new proposals on Tuesday aimed at helping Americans cope with a sharp plunge in the stock market.
On Monday, Obama proposed four steps to create jobs and to cushion Americans against the effects of the economic downturn as he campaigned in Ohio.
Nearly half, 49 percent, said they do not see recovery for a long time, and that the current problems represent an permanent change in the economy. But almost as many, 47 percent, said the economic downturn is only temporary.
Overall, Obama leads McCain 51 percent to 44 percent among registered voters, according to the USA Today-Gallup poll. The poll of 1,269 adults was taken Friday through Sunday, before the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied to climb 936 point on Monday. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Well I be damned....I never saw this coming....The sheep are already making excuses for their Messiah.
And when the taxes go up instead of down, you will say "he had no other choice. Our great leader didn't know the republicans had things this screwed up".
And you will have totally forgot and denied the democrats who pushed the "NINJA loans" through....Thank you Barney Frank and accomplices.

Hell yes he does. I think it's some one else that's been spending too much time at the bar that doesn't get it.
For about 5 years I've been explaining that we'd have a major economic crisis and that the President following Dubya probably wouldn't be able to fix it and that includes McCain.
Isn't it time that you start seeing the light?

I'm pretty sure no one could fix the economy at this point. Granted I'm one of those Peak Oil nuts and pretty much think barring a miracle we're heading towards a really really really (add x100 more reallys here) bad time.

I personally started noticing something wrong the last two years of clinton.
Mostly hidden inflation and creative unemployment numbers.
Thought just an attempt to assure gores following admin.
But bush accelerated an agenda of globalization at any cost without any concern for the citizens of america.
Borders were opened to allow a work force to compete in a world arena, with the results of making us compete with the illegal workforce.
The markets were given free reign to pump up an economy thats only based on the ability to borrow money,
There is no easy fix and obama cant solve this with more money.
How long we will throw money at this is anyones guess but eventually we will all know that wont work.

Obama's nightmare is not how to get elected,
it is getting elected, lol.
he has a lot of grace, he might do ok.

Funny you should say that...as I was watching the debates all I could think of was, "these guys must be nuts for wanting this job."

I have thought that,
that anyone wanting to be president has to be either incompetently retarded, insane or some of both.
One worry i have with Obama is it turning into a cult of personality,
but with the problems he & we are facing being smug will not be an option.
Managing a planet is an impossible job,
trouble is,
there is no one else here but us to do it.
we will just have to muddle through.
we are impossibly improbable,
doing the impossible should come pretty naturally to us.

A lot of people did. Isn't that when Rupert Murdoch started funding Bill Kristol and the Neoconservative movement?

My problem with Obama is that he's a very typical politician, almost a textbook politician, but he has this ability to wrap issues in pretty packages. To me that's a little scary because people listen to the tone of the speech, but they don't stop and go, hey wait, how the hell is that going to workout.
With McCain, he's not a great orator, so you listen to what he's saying more without romanticizing it.
Basically they're the same type of politician, but one has good delivery. That's really the only difference.

Actually what I saw was the start of a recession being covered up to not interfer with gore following clinton.
Kinda innocent but bush gets in, keeps the numbers hidden and spends like money grows on trees.
Market corrections might have exposed this mess before it grew so large.

I don't think Obama has all the frustration baggage that McCain does.
McCain can be really nasty, vicious & scary.
Obama may be another sleaze ball, but at least he seems to be an easy going sleaze ball.

Why do you think he's the Messiah?Because he's a wonderful honest man who never lies, and his only goal in life is to change the world for the better and improve the lives of all people.:hero:
He is like no other political figure ever before in histiory as he actually does care about the "little people".
It's almost as if he was sent by God to save us from the evil of rhe world that is destroying our lives.:angel:

No Hoggie,
only YOU would believe that kind of Bullshit . . . when the GOP is spewing it.
Such a gullible fool, no wonder you need to turn to alcohol to placate your pain.
As for talking about the 'little people', even despite politicians connections to corporate money, they rhetoric tends to move the agenda in the direction of the rhetoric.

So you've seen those old bumpers stickers too:
"When God wanted to speak to Moses he chose Bush"
Hog, you're spending so much time listening to Glenn Beck that you're really starting to believe what he says. Do you know anyone that thinks those things about Obama?
