View Full Version : Palin Didn't Do So Bad
I think this is more her stage then dealing with an interviewer that insists on answering questions.
Her time in 5 school learning about communications worked well. She was able to ignore the live audience and the person asking the question a could look directly into the camera, wink and smile.
As Bret Hume said, she was short intellectually but she was able to deliver her messages.
It seemed like a lot of very well rehearsed 2 minutes infomercials.
I'd hire her over that Oxyclean guy any day.

This debate made me wish Biden was on top of the ticket...well spoken, command of the facts, and decidedly Presidential. Not sure why Dems didn't see this in the primary debates because he was as spot on there as he was tonight. People may find his sober delivery a little boring, but I was rather impressed by him.
Palin did fine though, I think the only weakness she had tonight was explaining John McCain's voting record. She was likable, had a grasp of the facts, and I think even her harshest critics will say she did a fair / good job. That's probably all she needed to do and I'm sure she brought the conservatives that were waning in support back to her side.

You have got to be kidding. Ive not heard anyone touch on Bidens toothy
smiles when she was talking like he was watching someone fall down!
He was grinning like a Cheshire cat most every time she spoke. Didnt
anyone else notice?
I just cant wait for his body language to be analyzed. It wont be pretty!
She did great! Too bad shes not a better candidates ticket!!!

Biden would have been a disaster on top of the ticket as evidenced by the fact that he didn't even come close to winning.
He suffers badly from foot in mouth disease.

I guess you are oblivious to the fact that Palin has long bangs that touch

Maybe a different interviewer would take her more seriously and ask more politically based questions. Rather than the Susie Homemaker Sorority Journalist all grown up and hasn't grasped what's important to the country Couric. :D I want to see Palin interiewed by Barbara Walters.

I rank the debate a near tie, Palin held her on against a tired boring old Joe.
I now think Obama should be Biden's Veep, even though he has many character flaws. Biden will be Dem version of Nixon, all foul mouthed and blunt without the cussing...........or does he cuss behind closed doors?
Biden appeared defensive and angry when Palin nailed him on lies and spins. She was clever to dodge questions and communicate her message and then go back into the question, as well at times Palin picked one part of the question to answer and got more time when asked to address the other parts......very clever way of selling herself.
Biden like Obama, wasted too much time talking about the past and he didn't go into enough details about the future. Kind of leaves the future uncertain when both men refuse to deliver what we all want to know???

Looks like "talking about the past" will now be the new Republican spin whenever anyone tries to tie McCain to the failed Bush policies.
Am I the only one who thought that she avoided the Achilles heal question, not because she wanted to dodge the question, but because she hadn't the slightest idea as to what an Achilles heal is? I never did hear her answer because my wife looked at me with this puzzled look and asked what the hell was Palin talking about and why isn't she answering the question.
I was glad that Biden bit his tongue on several occasions because, had he chosen, he could have ripped her to shreds and today the Republicans would have been spinning it in who knows how many ways. Sarah's 15 minutes of fame are over. It's time to go back North to Alaska.

Biden did the right thing .. he ignored Palin and went after McCain.
Palin was OK, but she avoded answering the questions and rambled on about things unconnected to the question.
Republicans knew shr couldn't stand toe-to-toe on issues and protected her by demanding that there only be 90 seconds allowed to answer the questions.
Palin is neither the problem nor the answer.
But you're right, she claimed "talking about the past" even when the question was about the Bush years. It's just another Rovian slight-of-hand gimmick that won't work.

Yep, I thought she did well also, other than maybe she should have been a teeny bit more prepared. I found it annoying that Couric kept asking her the same question over and over about where she got her info from. I would've just came out and told her the newspapers etc. that I had been reading. But then, that's me.
And I'm disappointed that she isn't running for vp on the dems ticket, rather than repugs, because I always seem to have more money in my pocket when the dems are in office. I don't like either candidate, this time around, so that makes it very difficult to make up my mind as to whom to vote for. But, seeing as how my money has been a lot less during this adminstrations stay in office, I may just up and vote the for the money. Havent' decided as yet, tho'.

She did fine.
I would describe her as a 'needler' in this performance.
Gleefully poking, always delicately wedging herself as the 'straight talker' on to 'Biden's supposed trickery'.
I would say she won on the shallow psychological level, although Biden, however unsmooth, carried more depth & command of knowledge.
She certainly didn't sway me, but she certainly redeemed herself after a couple of media disasters.
She has done good things. She has actually stood up to & ended some of the corruption in oil deals in Alaska. But she IMO did a terrible job as a Mayor. And judging her performance, in a state who's budget is FAT with oil revenues is kind of hard to judge.
Her folksy charm is very like Bush's. But while his are dubious at best her's are more genuine. She doesn't have all the Washington connection baggage that Bush did going in.
Speaking for myself i am not sure i could stand all that condescending patronizing in that scraping voice.
How a majority of other Americans feel i have very little idea.
How people can be so secure & smug based on a complete deficit of information & experience confounds me. But that is much of the GOP in a nutshell. Certain of everything & yet also Wrong on everthing.

There are two glaring, obvious reasons why Palin did a horrible job
in the Katie Couric interview but did a better job in the debate:
1. Katie Couric asked follow-up questions which forced Palin to
back up her empty, phony rhetoric with specific details, and she
obviously couldn't do it. She ended up looking like an airhead.
2. In the debate, the questions were easier and didn't require
Palin to give specific details, so she got away with spewing her
well-rehearsed talking points.
In the debate, Palin wasn't asked to explain some of the silly
things she has said, such as her ridiculous claim that she has
foreign policy experience because Alaska is located next to
Russia and Canada.
Obviously Palin does well in a scripted, rehearsed situation but
can't back up her empty rhetorical bullshit with specific details
when she's pinned down by a persistent reporter like Couric.
I doubt that Palin will be granting more interviews to reporters
unless they're sympathetic right-wing reporters.
I doubt that Palin will be granting more interviews to reporters unless they're sympathetic right-wing reporters.
I think that's a given. They can't allow open access to her or Palin will do exactly what she did before. She may do interviews with more drop outs like Hannity and maybe even chat with some drug addicts like Beck or Limbaugh but no more reporters or journalists that's for sure. Only commentators working for one of the billionaires supporting the cause.

Palin is the sole candidate who has ever run anything larger than a college debating society. If she is not qualified, none of them are, and we'd better dump ‘em all and start over. The governor of the smallest state or territory in the union easily trumps the other candidates on that score. Often, that's all that's necessary. I think a lot of the reason they are hammering her so much is because she's a woman and the newby on the block. Many people, especially women, are jelious of her, because she's smart, pretty, has a great family, runs a state, is a good mom, loves her family, and has proven, if you have the guts, ambition, and where with all, you can have it all, or come awful close to it. Biden's 14 Lies
Fresh from the McCain people.
JOE BIDEN’S 14 LIES TONIGHT
1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.
3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”
4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.
9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Frankie, if you're going to accuse Biden of lying, you should
provide proof. This means you need to provide an exact
quote of what Biden said, followed by links and sources
which prove his statement is a lie.
I don't have the time or interest to go through all of the
14 accusations of lying which you posted, but let's just
take a quick look at a couple of them:
Biden's 14 Lies
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning
less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the
Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals
making $200,000 or more.
At best, this amounts to a nitpicking distinction. At worst,
it amounts to a dishonest false accusation.
A quick google search reveals multiple links and sources
which prove that Biden was telling the truth about the
$250,000 figure.
Obama's Tax Plan (http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/1031268,CST-NWS-tax30.article)
QUOTE:
Obama says he would hike several taxes on people
making more than $250,000, including the amount
they pay on capital gains.
I read several reputable links which used the same
$250,000 figure mentioned by Biden in the debate.
Biden's 14 Lies
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain
weakened regulation -- he actually called
for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
This is a ridiculous attempt to twist the truth about
McCain's well-documented history of weakening and
reducing governmental regulation of corporations.
McCain's Deregulation of Wall Street (http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/21/mccain-deregulation/)
Quote:
McCain: I'm Glad I Deregulated Wall Street
In the wake of last week’s financial meltdown,
Sen. McCain has been calling for more regulation
and criticizing lax oversight of Wall Street, despite
the fact that he and former senator Phil Gramm
passed much of the deregulatory reforms that
led to the current crisis.
Interviewed on CBS today, however, McCain
said he does not “regret” championing the
deregulation of Wall Street:
Q: In 1999, you were one of the senators
who helped pass deregulation of Wall Street.
Do you regret that now?
McCAIN: No. I think the deregulation was
probably helpful to the growth of our economy.
Here's another link which backs up Biden:
McCain Against Economic Regulation
(Before He Was For It) (http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters/361590)
Quote:
Before he was for more government regulation
of the economy (as of yesterday), John McCain
was adamantly against it. In the wake of the
latest economic tumble, McCain has suddenly
discovered his inner populist. But for most of
his political career, McCain was just another
Republican cheerleader for corporate deregulation.
[And, in the case of Charles Keating, he improperly
intervened to protect the Savings & Loan magnate
from federal regulators.]
Writes the Washington Post today:
A decade ago, Sen. John McCain embraced legislation
to broadly deregulate the banking and insurance
industries, helping to sweep aside a thicket of rules
established over decades in favor of a less restricted
financial marketplace that proponents said would
result in greater economic growth.
There's a lot of strong evidence proving that Biden
told the truth about McCain's history of weakening
governmental oversight of wealthy corporations.
So who's really lying, Frankie?

Biden's 14 Lies
"Afghanistan is not Iraq," said Gen. David D. McKiernan, who led ground forces during the 2003 Iraq invasion and took over four months ago as head of the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan.
Speaking in Washington yesterday, McKiernan described Afghanistan as "a far more complex environment than I ever found in Iraq." The country's mountainous terrain, rural population, poverty, illiteracy, 400 major tribal networks and history of civil war all make for unique challenges, he said.
"The word I don't use for Afghanistan is 'surge,' " McKiernan stressed, saying that what is required is a "sustained commitment" to a counterinsurgency effort that could last many years and would ultimately require a political, not military, solution.
Another facet of the Iraq strategy that McKiernan doubts can be duplicated in Afghanistan is the U.S. military's programs to recruit tribes to oppose insurgents. That effort, begun in 2006 in Iraq's Anbar province, led a loose coalition of tribes to turn against the Sunni insurgent group al-Qaeda in Iraqand side with the U.S. military. It was expanded in early 2007 in a U.S. military effort to hire local tribesmen and former insurgents to serve as armed guards in their neighborhoods. In Iraq, nearly 100,000 of the volunteers, primarily Sunnis, are on the job.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported
a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state
tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.
Did Palin impose a windfall profits tax on Alaskan oil? (http://www.mccainfactcheck.com/facts/11/palin_windfall_profits_tax_344511.shtml)
Quote from McCain Fact Check:
Yes. Alaskans will receive $1,200 each from the
windfall tax, in addition to $2,069 they will receive
from other oil taxes.
While Obama and McCain debate a windfall tax on
oil companies - Obama in favor, McCain opposed -
Palin has already imposed a windfall oil profits tax
in Alaska.
Windfall tax lets Alaska rake in billions from big oil (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008103325_alaskatax07.html)
Quote from Seattle Times:
Over the opposition of oil companies, Republican
Gov. Sarah Palin and Alaska's Legislature last year
approved a major increase in taxes on the oil industry —
a step that has generated stunning new wealth for the
state as oil prices soared.

6. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to
FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating
John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy
when he says he voted against it 23 times.
John McCain's Hot Air
(http://www.salon.com/env/feature/2008/09/20/john_mccain_environment/)
Quote from Salon.com:
He may claim to be green, but McCain's environmental
record is every bit as dirty as that of Sen. James
"global warming is a hoax" Inhofe.
Few politicians in history have more successfully sold
a phony image about caring for the environment than
Sen. John McCain. His deceptions and distortions and
lies would fill a book.
The facts are clear. All you have to do is look at his
voting record. It reveals that McCain has long been
one of the strongest opponents of clean energy in
Congress, with a record matching that of James Inhofe,
the most hardcore global-warming denier in the Senate,
who comes from the heart of the oil patch in Oklahoma.

Biden's 14 Lies
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said
that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down
unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran.
Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden
attacked him for it.
At first I thought the McCain wingnuts might be right
about this one, but when I looked at the transcript
of what Biden actually said, and compared it to what
Obama said, it turns out that Biden told the truth.
Here's the question that Obama was asked during
one of the Presidential primary debates:
QUESTION: "In the spirit of that type of bold leadership,
would you be willing to meet separately, without
precondition, during the first year of your administration,
in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran,
Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge
the gap that divides our countries?"
OBAMA: "I would. And the reason is this, that the notion
that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to
them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle
of this administration - is ridiculous."
Please note that the question which Obama was asked
did not specifically mention Ahmedinijad, and Obama's
answer did not specifically mention Ahmedinijad.
In another primary debate, Obama pointed out:
OBAMA: "First of all, Ahmadinejad is not the most powerful
person in Iran, so he may not be the right person to talk to."
Now here's what Biden said in the VP debate:
BIDEN: "Can I clarify this? This is simply not true
about Barack Obama. He did not say sit down with
Ahmadinejad. The fact of the matter is, it surprises
me that Senator McCain doesn't realize that
Ahmadinejad does not control the security apparatus
in Iran. The theocracy controls the security apparatus,
number one."
The point that Biden was making was that McCain and
Palin have so little understanding of Iranian politics that
they don't even understand that Ahmedinijad is not the
most powerful person in Iran, and he wouldn't even be
the right guy to talk to.
Biden told the truth when he said Obama didn't say
"sit down with Ahmedinijad." Every time the McCain
wingnuts claim that Obama said he would sit down
with Ahmedinijad specifically, they are lying.
