FEMA says they are no longer responsible for providing ice. Huge mistake as anyone knows who has lived through a hurricane, ice is needed for medications for babies, the sick and the elderly. And you can’t make ice when there is no electricity in the area. It has to be brought in.
Also, I understand that the first responders do not have food or water.
FEMA is broken and needs to be reinstated to the cabinet level.

How did we get to the point where we think it's the responsibility of the Federal Government to take care of us?
How did people get so hooked on government aid that we now demand it and complain when they feel the Feds aren't doing enough? What arrogance!
Many of the people who complain the loudest, have paid little, if any taxes in their entire lifetime, yet feel owed. Fucking lowlife ingrates!
I think the disaster aid started out as a nice thing to do to help people out in time of emergency, but now people are no longer grateful and think of it as something owed to them.
Are we now Government dependent? It seems many people bitch and complain about the speed and quality of the help they receive and few show any gratitude or appreciation.

Ever notice that natural disasters only happen to poor folks?
How do those tornados know where the trailer parks are?
Are natural disasters unfair?
We need a federal study, this needs to be addressed.

Seriously. Where is FEMA?
An army of line crews from 31 states has converged on eastern Texas to help deal with the largest power failure in this large state’s history. New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/17/us/17ike.html?adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1221832805-vplX94LDPW4RawRYaJB2KA)

This is the typical response:
"The government ain't doin enough, and they ain't doin it fast enough!"

We pay a lot of money for FEMA, it should work. It's not something to be grateful for, it's something we're owed when it's necessary.

FEMA passed the buck to the state and local agencies. Will FEMA pay for the ICE, that is still unclear. FEMA should helpout regardless. This new rule will backfire on Bush and the legislature for failure to comprehend.
FEMA rules will have to be changed again or bare minimum, they need to setup a lifeline network with neighboring states so state and local governments will have a detailed list of ice companies and transporters. It's really a no brainer, drive out of the damaged area to buy ice, but people need to know where to go, with no power the communication network falls apart.

In fact, while the federal government can deliver ice to disaster areas, it's chosen not to, under newly-revised FEMA rules. Instead, individual states and local governments are now tasked with purchasing, delivering and storing ice, even though they face tough logistical challenges in doing so, according to critics of the new policy.
"FEMA is effectively saying we can't guarantee you ice," said Mike Womack, director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency
