I'm not interested in censoring speech.

To give an example, I received a pm recently suggesting that I should ban for making references that implied the use of the word "nigger".

I replied by saying that I'd have to decide that on a case by case basis - that it's use as a personal attack would constitute a threatening attack, but that it's general use was likley to be simply making explicit what was implicit - and that would be protected.

It was decided by unanimous vote that personal attacks were allowed and part of typical debate scenario.

Now I have been debating for years and it is NEVER permissible to personally attack someone.

The problem here is that the forum does allow personal attacks. That should be changed. If not, then families are fair game. It is a fine line that was bound to snowball because there is very little civility in these “discussions”.

You appropriately volunteered innocuous information about your wife and he ran with it. Making others think twice about sharing anything on this board regarding their personal experiences. And that’s a shame because when having a meaningful conversation about complex issues it is important to understand the other person’s perspective and that involves understanding their experiences.

There's a bigger question here. When making rules or interpreting them ask yourself what type of forum would you like this to be? Do you want more people like oneway or individuals who add value to the conversation? It’s a two step process. First you have to attract what you want and when you don’t get what you want you have to enforce the rules in such a way that it is not perceived as ironically a personal attack.

I was not a Jar head. I have a degree and can read. Jarheads are the dumbest soldiers on the planet. That's 100%. Look around your town. Every contractor pick up has a globe and ancor on it. WOW they really learned a lot in that branch. My service was with the National Guard (full time 10 years). 4 years active, ranger qualified. Left active to stay home and get a degree. Got my degree as I stated before. Long story short. All it got me was a very very lucky 3 month tour in a very very cold mountianous regen fixing an excryption system. Very lucky my tour was short. Got home and hit the 10 year mark. Stay in for another 10 or get out. I got out as I was tired of hearing commanders make stupid, very stupid choices concerning my friends lives. I did not want to have a hand in that anymore. So that was my service.

I know there are fraternization policies, but...BTW I'm sure the SC could tell you this. Those policies only pertain to officers and enlisted and their contact with each other. You are fully allowed to date another solider, sailer, airmen etc. As long as your ranks do not conflict. IE Officers are not to be with enlisted etc. But it happens all the time.
