View Full Version : Flag Burning
Should our government tell us that we can't burn a flag?
Should our government tell us that we can't burn a religious text?
It's mentioned in a few threads so I thought I'd create it's own place for it hear.
Personally if I saw someone trying to burn an American Flag made in America I'd physically try to stop it. I'd fight someone for it and I'd throw water or any other liquid (non flammable of course) all over the place to avoid the burning.
I'm not sure about having our government telling us what we can and cannot do with a piece of cloth. I mean if someone legally purchased a flag and wants to burn it then I'm not sure our government can tell us not to do it. I can beat the snot out of someone trying to do it but that's a personal choice.

It's not that it's a peice of cloth as you so put it, but that peice of clioth is the representation of MY country.

If someone chooses to burn a flag, it is protected under their right of free speech. I don't agree with it. But hey, I don't agree with a lot of things that people do in this country, yet I don't try to stomp a mud hole in them.
It is just a piece of cloth, I would be more appalled at someone burning a book (well depends on the book) than a flag. Your country is not your flag. Your country is your neighbors, your people, too many people forget that tis just a symbol. Symbols can change but what makes a country is the people and the ideals it was founded on.
That being said, I believe the Declaration is much more important than the flag. Yet people are basically wiping their asses with it in the government. Nobodies seems to get all hollering mad over that...

I hold the flag of our nation in high reverence, but I hold the freedom it represents in even higher reverence.
I may have a problem with the reason someone uses to burn the flag but not their right to do so.

Flying a flag upside down is a sign and signal of distress and believe every flag in America should be flying upside down right now.
I do have a serious problem with flying the flag of another nation in America and feel it is an insult and disrespectful.

If someone buys a flag and burns it on their property, that is their business.
However this is would be under the premise we live in a free country, which we do not. We live in a country where the majority makes the rules (in theory, in actuality, those who own the politcians do) and if those rules violate the personal, economic, civil and individual rights and freedoms of others so be it. It would be great to live in a free country, but it isn't what the people want.

If they have a permit to burn from a fire marshall then it is legal. No permit, lock thier angry little criminal asses up!! Permit or not, wait till they round the corner and kick thier fucking asses. An ass kicking.........now that's symbolic!!
Haters want to cast hate on thier country and act like the flag is an intelligent way to communicate. They think flag buring is symbolic and they think we should agree, these people have low morals nothing more.
Would they burn a Bald Eagle ?
Would they burn the Bible ?
Spray paint the Lincoln Memorial ?
How about burning themselves ?
The pictures and videos I've seen over the years show rebels and wackos nothing more. The lack the patriotism to agree that symbolic or not the flag did no harm to our people or our country.

not some symbolic flag.
worrying about that is like shadow boxing,
while you play around the country is being looted by internationalized government gangsters.
By focusing on the flag this much you are a traitor to the USA & its ideals.
Where in life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness is there any mention of a flag?
People who are this hysterical about a flag while they trample the constitution don't deserve to live.

You are right on target again, Hoggy. The flag represents the freedom America gives. And it is prob'ly the most well known flag in the world. I feel it's a lack of respect to burn it, and the mere thought peeves me off. Only an ass wipe would do such a thing.
And yes, you are correct in saying that flying a flag upside down is a distress signal.
I also feel it is an insult and disrespectful to fly the flag of another nation in America. We are a one flag country. The American flag. You know the one. The one with the stars and the red, white and blue stripes. Not multi flags. You don't see, Germany, England, France, Russia, Spain, Norway, Iraq, Iran, Thailand, Japan, Australia, China etc., flying flags that don't represent their perspective countries. Why should we? They are represented by one flag. As are we!
In the olympics, all countries involved each proudly wave THEIR flags. That's as it should be.

Yes burning the flag should be illegal.
I believe it should be a small crime but a crime non the less.
Indivual rights are protected and there are avenues to address grievences.
But because people fight and die while flying the flag, they have the right not to see it descecreated.
Burning anything is not free speech, it is an action.

Ah yes, free speech! That golden, noble and unbridled "right".
That would be until you say the n word (the world has to laugh its ass of
at us over such junk), or some hate speech deemed as such by some pc
group who wants to limit others free speech regarding their precious
sensibilities.
This country was a hell of a lot better off when we had some standards
beyond "anything goes", "its a right", everything is a "right" unless it offends
some dick head. And it was a lot better off before the aclu became so damn
strong. Hey, lets burn the aclu! Lets make a statement of free speech with
that.
Well, Im offended that someone would have such disrespect for my country
as to burn the symbol that so many enjoy at least some measure of freedom
under. You cant have it both ways. To say and do most anything that
strikes ones fancy is "freedom" or follow some friggin rules. How novel
that would be.
Yeah, whoever said "try that in Mexico" is right on. First, try illegally entering
Mexico and see how benevolent they are about illegal aliens and try burning
their flag and youll see some real patriotism south of the border.

Just because certain words or jestures or what have you may be offensive, doesn't mean we, the people, have to use them if we prefer not to. This is still a free country, for now, anyway.
It's no freakin' wonder the rest of the world laughs and makes fun of us. Good Golly! What a bunch of ass wipes we are letting tell us what to say and do. As far as I'm concerned, they can all take the "high road to hell."
For another, how about we start tossing all the illegals out on their ears like Mexico would do if the situation were reversed? They'd send any one of us packing or lock us up. We could sure learn from that. That's a pretty novel thing for the US to do, seeing as how we love to pretend all is right with the world, and that allowing all these illegals in, isn't going to present any problems for us now or ever. Yeah........right! How about any incurring medical costs? Or any assistance whatsoever? How about the crime?
Gee, let me see, maybe we should help Mexico clean up its country, and get some jobs there so the people will go back and stay, rather than sneak here and take, take, take whatever they can get. It's disgusting how our government has failed the people and let all these illegal aliens come here and not done anything about it. In another 25 years, at the rate they are arriving, the US will be on it's way to being a third world country. We'll end up being as over crowded as China is. And what a mess they have there. How much personal space does each family have there? Prob'ly about two feet. That's a mere guess, of course. Ah......overpopulation. What a wonderful thing!
But hey, I'll be dead before then and won't have to worry about it. And then it'll be the problem of any future kids, grandkids and great grandkids. But what the heck....we're a tolerant country. Just look at all the negative crapola we are tolerant of. The proof is in the pudding!

Go to a city hosting a world cup match and it becomes pretty clear that most people take more real pride in their country. I've visited 30+ countries and that level of pride is normal else where but no longer seen in America. Our own leaders try to divide us and attack everyone with differing beliefs. Listen to Fox/Beck or their followers and you'll see attacks instead of pride. "Hannity's America" makes it clear that if you don't believe as he does then you suck. Yes I do. The government is falling apart, anarchists are becoming news features whereas in the 1990's no one wanted to see such assholes. You say its all on Foxnews and Reps, the other half of the blmae goes to Democrats and thier desires to liberalise everything into an acceptable norm in society. Both parties are tearing apart the unity that existed for so long.
The more we see anarchy and chaos becoming acceptable the more we lose the Unity that makes up the United States of America. American haters do exist and they want to erase our values and impose thier own low class loser values as accepted norms. The majority want standards and laws to maintain the unity. The haters only want to break down all the barriers.

Well said Binky, we need standards and we need to drop the PC crap. PC is a control mechanism to swing an argument in favor of the opposition. If PC were really relevant and important in politics we'd have leadership in the USA that enforced immigration laws and stopped slithering through the laws looking for loopholes. And we wouldn't have law makers telling beaucrats to back off and ignore the law. Instead immigation has become a puppet to the puppet master politicians who would support a flag burner as quickly as they'd give free medical care and cash to an illegal alien. We have weak men and women in politics who are afraid to take a stand.

I don't think our government should make any laws concerning flag burning or religious text. And as for text, that would be censorship and we have the right to print it. But we certainly don't have to read it.
And I think calling someone "nappy headed ho's" or the like, is uncalled for and in extremely poor taste. But look at the person who did the name calling. That in itself, speaks volumns. He chose to lower himself to name calling and ended up looking the fool and a racist in public.

Yeah, those are great flicks. We're on our way to both of them now. :(
