The evil minion of the Vice Presidency....... Dick Cheney caught lying about the Chinese drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Think about it, Cheney is surrounded by dozens of people who check facts, yet he lies in an open forum or did he forget to check the facts, yea right. It is easy to do if you think about it!!! All drilling in the Gulf is registered whether the drilling in international waters or not. The Navy, Coast Guard, the government and all companies have free access to this data as do all citizens of the USA. Govt. keeps a database of all leases on file. So did the Dickster lie or is he that incompetent ?

Big oil wants to drill offshore, I say let them. We need to claim as much real estate as possible if for no other reason than to buy the leases now to prevent another country from making the claim. Grid lock on both sides of this debocle have kept us from drilling aka the political switcherooski.

It’s an urban legend that’s easy to believe for some Americans.

In early June, Vice President Dick Cheney told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that China was pumping oil from the Gulf of Mexico.

“…George Will pointed out in his column the other day that oil is being drilled right now 60 miles off the coast of Florida,” Cheney said. “But we’re not doing it, the Chinese are, in cooperation with the Cuban government. Even the communists have figured out that a good answer to high prices is more supply.”

Similar assertions have been made by other elected officials who, like Cheney, support more offshore drilling.

They include U.S. Reps. Sam Graves and Roy Blunt of Missouri, George Radanovich of California, and John Boehner of Ohio. All are Republicans.

Here’s the problem with their claims: China is not drilling for oil off Cuba, according to independent energy experts. Cheney’s office has since acknowledged this.

U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, a Florida Republican, recently refuted Cheney and other drilling proponents.

“China is not drilling off the coast of Cuba,” Martinez said on the Senate floor. “So any talk of using some fabricated China/Cuba connection as an argument to change U.S. policy, in my view, has no merit.”

Although Cheney’s office eventually acknowledged that he had erred, others have continued to repeat the incorrect claim.

This flap has undermined the credibility of those who are calling for additional offshore drilling by the U.S. That’s no panacea for the nation’s energy problems anyway. Better solutions include conservation, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and increased research into hydrogen- and electric-powered vehicles.

Urban legends won’t help build a more secure energy future for America.

This is way old news.

It was funny how the sheep were all over this story when Dick first told it. It was a perfect example of how NLP is being used to manipulate the public. They caused such an emotional response and anchored it so well that even today some people won't admit that it was lie.

Who in their right mind would quote George Will without doing any fact checking? It's just not possible for it to be a mistake.

Hmmmm, guess I missed the retraction if there was one. The media still tout the Chinese story so at least this commentary piece is aiding the public by repeating the news. I doubt George Will made a mistake, lobbiests love him!

We went through all this before, extensively.

I posted the NY Times article, with map, from over a year ago.

Cuba is leasing areas to drill for oil. They're presently exploring to find places to drill; but haven't set up rigs yet.

Time to buy those leases or purchase options to buy to lock up the parcels. I find it ironic that even as early as last week we still have media morons suggesting the chinese are already drilling the Gulf. Regardless someone is going to drill and sell the oil.

The hostility goes all the way back to the Bay of Pigs. We need to make friends with Cuba and establish open trade. US diplomats are touting peace, open communication and trade to other hostile countries, yet we can't let go of an event we won.

Aren't you forgetting the Cuban people, who hate the regime and flee the country every chance they get? Aren't they a factor? Just ask any Cuban living in Florida who escaped Cuba how we should treat the current regime.

No I'm not forgetting them. In fact if we establish better relations and trade, people will not be as eager to leave if they know they can earn a better living. Now if the Cuban govt. treats the people better that would be a positve factor as well. The USA is part of that problem too. We cut them off from our world of potential trade, food and medicine, etc..........

I thought we only cut them off from US trade.

So why aren't they taking care of their people now? They trade with everbody else and have oil too.

Exactly. People are getting all upset because China is drilling and there is no evidence that they are. Everything that you've posted since admits clearly that they're NOT drilling any where near our shores.

But of course since the Neoconservative media says it then it must be true even if all the facts int he world say differently :banghead:

Truth doesn't matter. The emotional response is all that counts.

Like I said "we cut them off from our world" not the entire
world. Re-read my previous post.

Again you're distorting things, SM.

Everything I've posted shows that Cuba is selling drilling rights to other countries; China being one if them.

Are you saying people are leasing areas to explore for oil, without the intention of drilling?

When I see the trem Our "world", I think of the US and our trading partners - not just the US itself, alone.

When you mean a single country, then don't use the word "world". It implies our entire sphere of influence.

That's your error not mine. I'll use whatever language I choose,
learn to read and comprehend better. The mere mention of "trade"
was an obvious clue that you should have picked up on, as in trade
with the USA!

Another obvious clue, the previous sentence leads in with
"The USA is part of that problem too"

I know the meaning of the word "world".

And it implies a lot of things. And we're not the only country in the "world" who trades.
Our "world" encompasses more that just our physical territory.

blah blah blah and you don't control my world now do you?
Get over it!

World only implies what the sentence says, your opinion is just
that. There's nothing you can do about it!

Yea me too. I never side with one party. Those rules just don't work for me.
Dems here think I'm not a team player so they never solicit money from me, lol.
