Tort Reforms have brought a revolution in the field of medicine in Texas. These reforms saved it from a healthcare crisis as the doctors were closing their practices as they could not afford liability insurance. There was a scarcity of doctors leading to great inconvenience on the part of the patients. The expectant mothers needed to travel long distances for checkups. Dozens of surgeries needed to be cancelled for lack of neurosurgeons, general surgeons and other specialists.
The introduction of major reforms in the medical liability laws saved the whole situation, leading to better healthcare facilities, declining insurance costs, dropping of frivolous lawsuits against doctors and hospitals.
There has been a vast improvement in the situation with enhanced health care, increased number of hospitals, doctors, health care centers. Texas doctors have peace of mind that the good they do in the examination room will not be unfairly targeted in the courtroom. The Medical liability reform is giving patients greater access to healthcare and improving the quality of care Texans receive.
In order to fight the cause of Tort Reforms, Mr. Dick Weekley, established a state wide organization called Texans for Lawsuit Reforms (TLR), which aimed at restoring litigation to its traditional and appropriate role in our society. Through the TLR, Mr. Dick Weekley (http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110010157) seeks to create a civil justice system that discourages non-meritorious lawsuits or outrageous claims for damages. TLR is dedicated to bringing fairness and balance back to Texas’ civil justice system.
