View Full Version : New record highs for both oil and gasoline
I know you are tired of hearing about it.
Oil closed today at a new record of $127.35.
Gasoline hit a record high for the 10th straight day - at a countrywide average of $3.79 a gallon. Diesel is $4.52.

msnbc says $127.05 - bloomberg says $127.35 - I trust bloomberg more.

No, my demand was never that high to begin with. When I cut back, it's elsewhere. The heating and cooling, watching the grocery budget, I think twice before making impulse purchases. Things like that. I actually end up with extra money at the end of the month.

We're doing about the same but we don't use a lot any way. My wife drives to school and there's no option of public transportation. We car pool my little girl with 2 others for pre school (which is over for the summer) and I work from home and often fill up once a month.
My wife does drive an SUV but it's a Honda CRV which at the time was the smallest 5 passenger SUV on the market and gets better MPG then most mid size sedans.
America faces 2 big issues with rising oil prices.
1. Out dollar is so low that our price has increased 600% were in Europe they've seen a much smaller persentage increase.
2. We're Americans and don't want to sacrifice for the future so we won't spend money on public transportation. Cars are all we have. In many suburbs in cities over seas you don't need a car. Here in the burbs you need one.

I have been carpooling with a co-worker when possible. It's hard though because I have school a lot of nights. Also trying to lay off the AC this summer.

My new job that I start Monday is 5 miles from my house. Just over the state line.
I could take a bus and get dropped off several blocks from the clinic and walk the rest of the way. The total trip would be around 45 - 60 minutes to an hour. And I would have to take a cab home as the bus stops running before I'm off work. Cab fare would cost me about $10.00 - $15.00 here.
Or I can drive it and be to work in 10 minutes. I'll pay for the gas. LOL.
I was considering getting a motor scooter, but not sure the savings will outweight the cost of the scooter and insurance enough to justify doing so. Not to mention that I'm not all that sure I want that wind blown look every day.
.
Gasoline just hit $3.85 a gallon here in the hills of pennsylvania.
Oil crossed the $130 a barrel line today.
It's sitting at $129 after the close of market.
God, I'm glad I work at home - but my business is going to suffer, I'm sure. It already seems like it's worse.
The wife and I are trying to be careful about not doing unnecessary driving.
My gardens are doing well, tho - it's been a cool wet spring here, and the salad greens are loving it.

I live in L.A. and the traffic is horrible, so I go everywhere
by motorcycle -- a Suzuki GSXR 600 crotch rocket.
The GSXR has a high-revving racing engine, so I only get
35 miles to the gallon because I drive so fast all the time.
Lane-splitting is legal in California, so I always ride between
the lanes of cars. I pay $80 per year for liability insurance
which is required by state law.
I just can't tolerate being stuck in traffic jams like all of
you car people. I own an old van that gets only 10 miles
to the gallon, but I hardly ever drive it. Motorcycle is my
primary transportation. Makes it easy to find parking too.

I bought a house .9 of a mile from my shop four years ago.
Here in San Diego we pay 20-30 cents more than most.
I wonder if one of you computer wizs could start a registry of locations and time and start carpools? And give me as break not being computer saavy this may already exist.
I only see a drop in comsumption as an incentive to get the speculators running for the hill and let gas find its normal level again.

Betty, sounds fun... My race prepped 350 RWHP 5.0 mustang that only gets about 10 MPG (only put about 500 miles a year on it). :)
I am an urban rat, and not only is riding my mountain bike exercise... It also saves a thousans a year on gas. Oil prices will have no direct affect on my finances.
(That is until it starts increasing plastic food container cost).
Bill, In Oahu Hawaii, the price has just reached $3.85 also, with the outer islands at $4.00 per gallon.
I really don't care anymore, as one can do nothing about this long overdue reality check, that humans need to ween themselves off of this finite and soon ending(though not in our lifetime) resource.

OMG!!! Just the bearer of the darkest of news!!
Well, Im in the country...closest tiny town is 15-20 minutes away. The next
town with anything is at least 30 minutes away and Cookeville is 45 minutes
away!~~shudder~~! I drive a little 98 S10 pickup truck with a V6 engine
so Im just loading up on supplies when I do go out and just not go out unless
I can accomplish multiple errands etc. Good thing I have plenty to keep me
busy here cause thats where Ill be most all the time for a long time!
This is really scary though. Who would have thought? I didnt! So, I
wonder when the tipping point will hit and we just collapse!:disbelief:

When my car died, I got a $500 '93 Tempo; from a friend of a friend - it was well kept-up. And I live only 7 miles from work.
I'm preparing myself for at least $6 a gallon gas. Hopefully some bubble will burst at that point. Hopefully ..............
There will be a drop in oil prices around September.
After that the oil companies are going to keep the pressure until we give up all American land.
