The voters aren't as stupid as McCain and Hillary would like to believe they are.

Overwhelming Majority See Gas Tax Suspension As Political Ploy (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/04/overwhelming-majority-see_n_100074.html)

By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MARJORIE CONNELLY | May 4,

A majority of American voters say that the furor over the relationship between Senator Barack Obama and his former pastor has not affected their opinion of Mr. Obama, but a substantial number say that it could influence voters this fall should he be the Democratic presidential nominee, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

At the same time, an overwhelming majority of voters said candidates calling for the suspension of the federal gasoline tax this summer were acting to help themselves politically, rather than to help ordinary Americans. Mr. Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, has made the suspension of the gas tax a centerpiece of her campaign in recent days.

In the survey, taken in the days leading up to the primaries on Tuesday in Indiana and North Carolina, Americans were divided over the merits of the gasoline-tax suspension, which has also been backed by the presumptive Republican nominee, Senator John McCain, and condemned by Mr. Obama as political gimmickry.

Still there's a huge percentage of Americans that simply don't understand that basics of our economy. They listen to talk radio and only understand a very narrow view and aren't capable of seeing the larger picture.

Yes it's nice that many Americans are starting to get it but it's sad that so many still don't and at this point I think they never will.

Americans live the cloudy delusion that their actions, unlike everyone else's, are NOT a part of a chain of causes & effects.

They think driving a gas guzzling hummer makes them a man & a patriot if they wear a lapel pin & support the Iraq insanity, forgetting that their gas money supports terrorists & their taxes & pimping their children supports fraudulent defense contractors in Iraq, and their flags are made by serfs in China.

Americans are like nudibranchs they have no frame of reference they base their actions on. They just reflexively, thoughtlessly respond to what makes them feel good, without a notion of the likely results of those actions.

Instead of wanting a world with less terrorists & thinking how do i rationally, effectively achieve it,
they just want the rush of killing more defenseless Iraqis & feeling good & 'patriotic' when their defense contractor government labels them 'al-Qaeda'.

They only wish there were MORE terrorists for them to kill, & in THAT they are succeeding to the detriment of all sane Americans.

Americans are insane.
They behave like meth addicts,
robbing & pimping their own children to the Chinese with deficits so they can get a rush & then claim they 'care' so much.
Just how intellectually, morally, ethically bankrupt can you get?

It is really criminally sick what Americans & their government get away with as socially acceptable behavior.

There can be no decent god.
He/She/It would have put a stop to this travesty long ago.

i don't believe in a literal satan, but American actions fit far better with that analogy than with any kind of ethical, sane or logical god.
They are like drunken, irresponsible sailors,
accountable to no one.

Sales of small and gas efficient cars was up in April, while sales of SUVs and pickups continue to drop. Small cars outsold bigger vehicles in April.

Why interrupt that trend?

My favorite commentary on this:

Fuel tax cut running on empty
By Julian Delasantellis

There's a serious conversation going on at an American pediatrician's office.

"Mr and Mrs Smith, we have a dangerous situation developing with your four-year-old son, Travis Billy Ray. He already weighs almost 50 kilograms, and is showing all the signs of incipient Type 2 Diabetes, almost unheard of for a child of this age. Also, I note that most of his teeth are already rotted away with deep cavities. I think that, at the very least, we're going to have to make significant changes to his lifestyle, particularly his diet."

Travis Billy Ray's parents are at first disheartened and worried at the news, but then, with recent developments in the 2008 US presidential election as a guide and an inspiration, they know precisely what to do. "Let's get him a case of candy bars!"
