My laudromat just replaced most of the washers with front-loaders. However, they are more expensive. Also, I have no idea how much detergent to put in or how many clothes to put in. Since its more expensive, I deduced that I should jam the machine with as much clothes as possible to compensate for the increased cost from a regular washer. I put in the normal amount of detergent.
Now for some reason all my clothes are really itchy. Either I didn't put enough detergent, or the water didn't rinse out all the soap. Has anyone had this problem? It just seems like a rip-off to me.

Front loaders use less water to do the same amount of laundry. You also use about half the amount of detergent. When you put your clothes in they should not go any higher than half the drum if you want them washed well.
You will find that doing your laundry that way will make your clothes cleaner than with the top loading washers which are very ineffective in removing dirt.
I imagine that even if the laundromat had replaced the old washers with new top loaders your cost for doing laundry still would have gone up.

Front loaders are far more efficient. They do use less water and need 1/2 the soap. They are also much easier on your cloths. In theory, your cloths should last a lot longer.
They may take a little longer with front loaders but as the lady says, will be cleaner.
Your cloths should also come out much less wet and should not need much time in the drier. In fact. you may just want to put things directly on hangers.
My European and energy conscience wife had me a do some research on the subject when purchasing a new washer.

A front loader washer uses a different detergent.
The bottle will say "front loaders only".

Regular clothes washing soap will work. Soap is soap. You just use a lot less with a front loader.
