Notes: Sanchez takes first step
Righty 'on the way back' after 26-pitch intrasquad outing
By Marty Noble / MLB.com

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- For a few moments, his first moments in a game scenario since July 2006, Duaner Sanchez was the junior high schooler trying to impress the varsity coach. His final warmup pitch and the first two pitches Sanchez threw to Ramon Castro in the Mets' intrasquad game on Monday were all about velocity. Technique, location, setting up the hitter -- none of that mattered.

"That was a pitcher who hadn't pitched in a year and half," said Randy Niemann, the man who directed Sanchez's rehabilitation from two right shoulder surgeries. "He just had to get through that."

Niemann was quite encouraged by the velocity of the three caveman pitches and more pleased by Sanchez's subsequent pitches -- sliders, changeups and more fastballs.

"He threw fastballs inside to left-handed hitters," Niemann said, "and they didn't come back [over the plate]" -- a sign that Sanchez's pitches had power behind them.

Sanchez faced six batters and threw 26 pitches, more than he had planned.
"I'm going to go home and sleep now," Sanchez said after his shower. "I feel like I pitched 15 innings."

On the first day of competition -- such as it was -- in Mets camp, Sanchez's six-batter sequence was clearly the focal point. The Sandy Alomars defeated the Jerry Manuels, 7-5, in six innings. And most of the participants were uncertain of the identity of their team.

But most of them had watched Sanchez's return through the prism of what he can mean in the summer when the swings and misses he accumulates in inordinate numbers will have consequence.

"It looks like he's on the way back," manager Willie Randolph said. "It's very positive to see him now after a year and a half."

The more things change, the more they stay the same: First game, second at-bat -- a Jose Reyes triple. He had singled in his first at-bat. For those who believe in what happens in February, catcher Brian Schneider was the only other player with two hits.

Breakfast of champions: David Wright is a marketer's dream. Young, successful, earnest, articulate, et al. There appears to be only upside in having the Mets' third baseman as a spokesman. The folks at Wheaties thought so. And before the 2006 postseason, they contacted Wright. An agreement was in place. The all-American boy would grace the Wheaties box if the Mets won the World Series.

But they didn't quite make it, and no subsequent arrangements have been made. The Mets can't win the 2006 World Series anymore.

"But we can win in '08," Wright said.

Breakfast of champions II: When the Mets' clubhouse microwave had done its normal duty on Monday morning, Marlon Anderson entered the kitchen, glove in hand, fully prepared to nuke it. For years, Mets infielders, outfielders and the occasional catcher relied on the expertise and generosity of Buddy Harrelson. He broke in their gloves the old-fashioned way. Now, microwaves soften the leather.

"Thirty seconds, then 45," Anderson said. He removed the glove after the first session, flexed it several times and subjected it to 45 more seconds of heat. And it became noticeably more pliable.

Ah well, another baseball tradition is fading.

Keith Hernandez, who won five of his 11 Gold Glove Awards with the Mets, used water, shaving cream -- because of the lanolin in it -- and time to break in his gloves. Microwaves were not recommended.
"You can't put metal in one of those things," Hernandez pointed out last year. "And gold is a metal."

Wright back: Wright returned to camp on Monday after spending two days in Virginia to attend the funeral of his paternal grandmother. Helen Wright -- about 80, her grandson said -- died last week. And with her passed an affection for the Mets and Duke basketball.

"Mee-maw," as Wright called her, had lived with her son, daughter-in-law and four grandsons since the Mets' third baseman was a junior in high school. His parents had sold their house on Virginia Beach and Mee-maw's house in nearby Chesapeake and brought both grandparents to share their new home in Chesapeake. Wright was in high school when his grandfather died. Both grandparents were stricken with Parkinson's disease.

Wright's grandmother loved the Dukies, but Mets blue took precedence over their blue. She had campaigned in the house to sign up for Major League Baseball's cable package. And though she didn't grasp the game's finer nuances, she understood the bottom line of it.

"But 0-for-4 or 4-for-4, she'd greet you the same," Wright said.

Angel in the outfield: Well, halo in the outfield is more like it. One day later, a circular bruise has formed on the left tricep of Carlos Beltran, evidence of his being struck by one of Johan Santana's batting-practice fastballs.
The imprint of the stitches remains.

Furthermore: Randolph likes the small curveball of left-handed rookie Jonathon Niese. "You don't see many left-handed curveballs anymore," Randolph said. ... General manager Omar Minaya said Niese is on the same level as Deolis Guerra, the most highly regarded of the three young pitchers the Mets moved to the Twins in the Santana trade.

Johan sharp in second spring start
Mets ace fans four Dodgers, Pagan remains in groove
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com

METS 3, DODGERS 2
at Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Wednesday, March 5

Dodgers at the plate: Jason Repko collected two hits and drove in the first Dodgers run with a single in the second inning. His replacement in the lineup, George Lombard, singled in the Dodgers' other run with a pinch-hit single in the seventh.

Mets at the plate: Top prospect Fernando Martinez doubled in the second inning, eventually scoring on a Raul Casanova double play. Outfielder Angel Pagan continued his torrid spring with yet another hit, pushing his Grapefruit League average to .429. He eventually gave way to Ezequiel Carrera, who tied the game with a single in the eighth. Anderson Hernandez won it on a walk-off single down the line in the ninth.

Dodgers on the mound: Brad Penny allowed his first earned run of the spring, but nothing else. He lasted three innings, walking two and yielding three hits. Rotation hopeful Chan Ho Park was even more impressive in relief, striking out three over two scoreless innings, while lefty specialist Mike Myers threw his third scoreless inning of the spring.

Mets on the mound: Johan Santana's second Mets appearance was more successful than his first by no small margin. Pitching three innings and relying more on his changeup and slider, Santana allowed only one run to a Dodgers lineup composed mainly of regulars. Reliever Steven Register continued his impressive spring with two more innings of shutout ball, bringing his spring total to four. Fellow bullpen hopeful Joe Smith found more trouble in his one inning, but escaped to pick up the win.

Grapefruit League records: Dodgers 2-5, Mets 5-3.

Up next: Derek Lowe will make his second Grapefruit League start on Thursday, as the Dodgers travel across the state to take on the Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla. Relievers Eric Stults, Mario Alvarez and Eric Hull are also scheduled to pitch for the Dodgers in a 1:05 p.m. ET start.

After deferring his first turn in the rotation to further prepare for the upcoming season, Pedro Martinez will finally make his Spring Training debut for the Mets on Thursday night against the Nationals. He'll start opposite right-hander John Patterson in a 7:05 game in Viera, Fla., with Billy Wagner and Aaron Heilman also scheduled to pitch for the Mets.

Mets subs shine in win over Indians
Saenz, Cancel spark offense to help pick up lefty Perez
By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com

METS 8, INDIANS 6
at Winter Haven, Fla.
Friday, March 7

Mets at the plate: It wasn't exactly an Opening Day-ready lineup that the Mets sent to Chain of Lakes Park, but the bats weren't quiet. Angel Pagan and Olmedo Saenz ripped back-to-back doubles off Cliff Lee in the first inning, and Robinson Cancel brought home another run when he walked with the bases loaded. Cancel later hit a solo homer off Joe Borowski in the third, and Saenz hit a solo shot of his own off Rafael Betancourt in the fourth.

Indians at the plate: The man known as Pronk had a big afternoon for the ESPN cameras. Travis Hafner scorched two doubles in his first two at-bats against Oliver Perez, driving in three runs. In the third inning, Jhonny Peralta and Trevor Crowe each added an RBI single.

Mets on the mound: Oliver Perez has seen better days. The left-hander surrendered six runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Nelson Figueroa, who is trying to land a spot as a long reliever, put together a nice audition for the role. He worked three scoreless innings, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out a pair.

Indians on the mound: Lee was supposed to work two innings in his second spring start, but he lasted just two-thirds of the first frame. He used 38 pitches to give up a pair of runs on three hits with two walks. Jeff Stevens relieved Lee and gave up a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings. Back-end relievers Borowski, Betancourt and Masa Kobayashi all got their work in.

Grapefruit League records: Mets 6-3; Indians 3-5-1.

Up next: It's ill-timed, given their injury-depleted ranks, but the Mets will see their first split-squad action of the spring on Saturday. At least all the players ready for game-action won't have trouble finding playing time, as the Mets host the Marlins in Port St. Lucie, Fla., at 1:10 p.m. ET and travel to Ft. Lauderdale to meet the Orioles at 1:05 p.m. Mike Pelfrey starts at home, with lefty Jonathan Niese getting the call on the road.

The Indians remain in Winter Haven for a 1:05 p.m. date with the Phillies. Right-hander Fausto Carmona, who struggled in his spring debut, will get the starting nod, with Aaron Laffey, Jensen Lewis, Rafael Perez, Ed Mujica, Rick Bauer and Matt Ginter all available to pitch in relief.

Unhittable Maine carries Mets
Right-hander hurls four scoreless frames against Astros
By Marty Noble / MLB.com

METS 3, ASTROS 0
at Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Sunday, March 9

Astros at the plate: Offense was in short supply on Sunday, as Darin Erstad, Tommy Manzella and Nick Gorneault, who each singled, were the only starting players to record a base hit against Mets pitchers.

Mets at the plate: Jose Reyes led off the first inning with his first home run of the spring. A squeeze by Anderson Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Damion Easley produced runs in the second and sixth innings. Angel Pagan had his 15th hit of the spring, his second double, while David Wright hit a triple in the first.

Astros on the mound: Right-hander Jack Cassel allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in his three innings. The earned run was the home run by Reyes. A squeeze by the Mets' Hernandez produced the second run in the second. Runelvys Hernandez, the 29-year-old former Royals pitcher who was invited to Astros camp, allowed a run in 2 2/3 innings.

Mets on the mound: John Maine pitched four hitless innings, walking one batter and striking out three before Billy Wagner replaced him. His fastball steady at 94 mph, Wagner allowed a hard-hit single off the glove of third baseman Wright on a changeup to Gorneault. Aaron Heilman allowed a hit in the sixth.

Grapefruit League records: Mets 8-4, Astros 6-5.

Up next: Tradition Field may list to the left a tad on Monday, when the Red Sox make their lone visit of the spring to "Port St. Lefty" or "Portside Lucie." Johan Santana, decidedly left-handed, is to make this third exhibition game start for the Mets opposite Jon Lester, who is equally left-handed, at 1:10 p.m. ET. The scheduled relievers include the Mets' Pedro Feliciano and the Sox's Hideki Okajima and Javier Lopez, all left-handers.

The Astros play at home in Kissimmee, Fla., on Monday afternoon at 1:05 ET, with a matchup of terrific pitchers -- Roy Oswalt against Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays.

Pelfrey limits damage in loss to Cards
Mets righty allows one earned run, adds single and run scored
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

CARDINALS 6, METS 5 (10 innings)
at Jupiter, Fla.
Thursday, March 13

Mets at the plate: Olmedo Saenz's two-out RBI single in the ninth inning gave the Mets the lead. Jose Reyes singled twice and scored both times. Endy Chavez had a single and a two-run double, and Carlos Beltran singled in a run and walked. Starter Mike Pelfrey singled and scored.

Cardinals at the plate: Rico Washington hit an RBI single in the 10th inning, driving in Skip Schumaker, who walked. Schumaker stayed hot with two more singles, continuing to thrive in the leadoff spot. Yadier Molina singled and doubled, and D'Angelo Jimenez smacked an RBI pinch-hit double to score Molina. Albert Pujols singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Mets on the mound: Pelfrey wasn't spectacular, but he kept the damage to a minimum. He lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out one and walked two. Pedro Feliciano allowed an unearned run in the seventh, betrayed by Robinson Cancel's drop of Troy Glaus' two-out popup.

Cardinals on the mound: Braden Looper was knocked around a little bit, allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings. He struck out two and walked two. Jason Isringhausen breezed through 1 1/3 perfect innings. Chris Perez struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning before Jason Motte gave up a run in the ninth, but pitched a scoreless 10th and earned the win.

Grapefruit League records: Mets 9-6; Cardinals 6-9.

Up next for the Mets: The Mets return to Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter on Friday, this time to oppose the Marlins at 1:05 p.m. ET. John Maine, whose fastball impressed teammates and scouts in his most recent start, is to make his fourth exhibition start. After pitching four innings -- he allowed no hits -- against the Astros on Sunday, Maine is in position to pitch five innings Friday. Scott Schoeneweis is to follow him. Ricky Nolasco was the only Marlins pitcher listed for Friday.

Up next for the Cardinals: Past meets future for the Cardinals when they head north to Vero Beach, Fla., on Friday. It will be the club's final visit to venerable Dodgertown, with a first-pitch time of 12:05 p.m. CT at Holman Stadium. Taking the mound for the visiting Redbirds, however, is one of the organization's most promising prospects. Right-hander Clayton Mortensen, a 2007 draftee, will make his second Grapefruit League start.

Catcher 3-for-4 with two RBIs; righty goes five scoreless frames
By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com
03/14/2008 4:09 PM ET

METS 8, MARLINS 2
at Jupiter, Fla.
Friday, March 14

Marlins at the plate: Hanley Ramirez opened the first with a double and moved to third on an error, but he was stranded on the basepaths. John Maine then held the Marlins hitless until Ramirez's single in the third. Jorge Cantu added a single in the fourth and an RBI single in the eighth. Robert Andino also added an eighth-inning RBI hit.

Mets at the plate: Carlos Beltran had a double and single, setting up two big innings. Robinson Cancel had a big day with two singles, a double and two RBIs. His two-base hit triggered a four-run second inning where the Mets batted around. Cancel, Argenis Reyes and Endy Chavez each had RBI singles in the frame, while Anderson Hernandez lifted an RBI sacrifice fly. In the third, the Mets scored three more runs. Beltran and Carlos Delgado each singled, Cancel delivered an RBI single and Hernandez lofted his second sacrifice fly.
Marlins on the mound: Ricky Nolasco, in contention for a rotation spot, had a rough time, giving up six runs and seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in two-plus innings. He threw 54 pitches, 28 for strikes. Prospect Burke Badenhop, a sleeper to win a job in the rotation, threw four scoreless innings of relief, striking out four while yielding three hits. A sinkerball pitcher, Badenhop induced six groundball outs, while rolling up 58 pitches.

Mets on the mound: Maine made his fourth start, and he had a stellar five-scoreless innings outing. Coupled with his last outing, Maine has strung together nine shutout innings. He struck out six and scattered three hits. Maine stretched out to 75 pitches, with 45 for strikes. Lefty reliever Scott Schoeneweis tossed one inning of one-hit ball, with two strikeouts.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 12-7-1, Mets 10-6-1.

Mets up next: The twin Mets will be playing Saturday when the Cardinals come to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Luis Castillo and Johan Santana, teammates with the Twins as recently as July, are to be on the field together as Mets for the first time. Castillo is to make his first appearance in an exhibition game, and Santana is to make his fourth start in the 1:10 p.m. ET game to be carried on MLB.TV. Adam Wainwright will get the start for the Cardinals.

Marlins up next: Rick VandenHurk, in the hunt for a rotation spot, is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three Grapefruit League games (two starts). He's logged eight innings and surrendered seven hits. The native of the Netherlands gets the start on Saturday against the Orioles in Jupiter at 1:05 p.m. Baltimore will start Steve Trachsel.

Mets cruise as Maine stifles Orioles
Castillo drives in only run to back righty's latest spring gem
By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com
03/24/2008 3:40 PM ET

METS 1, ORIOLES 0
at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Monday, March 24

Mets at the plate: Second baseman Luis Castillo was the only Met to rack up a hit in the first six innings, and he wound up with two of them. His second hit, an opposite-field flare to right field, scored the game's first run. Center fielder Brady Clark drew a walk in the third inning, and right fielder Ryan Church singled in the seventh.

Orioles at the plate: Baltimore didn't do much on offense Monday, and right fielder Nick Markakis was the only player to get a hit in the first six innings. Left fielder Luke Scott walked once and struck out once. Second baseman Brian Roberts struck out twice in his first three at-bats, and shortstop Luis Hernandez struck out and grounded out.

Mets on the mound: John Maine was all but unhittable for the road team, as he threw six innings of one-hit ball and struck out six batters. Maine kept the Orioles from even reaching scoring position and lowered his spring ERA to 1.85.

Orioles on the mound: Adam Loewen had perhaps his most impressive start of the spring season on Monday, when he worked through five innings and allowed just two hits. Loewen walked three batters and had three strikeouts. Jim Johnson and Jamie Walker both worked scoreless innings in relief.

Grapefruit League records: Mets 17-9-1; Orioles 8-14-2;
Mets up next: The Mets will take on the Braves in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Tuesday at 1:10 p.m. ET, and southpaw Jon Niese will start against Atlanta's Tim Hudson. New York is 9-4-1 at home so far during the Grapefruit League schedule.

Orioles up next: The Orioles will play their second-to-last home game of the Grapefruit League season on Thursday, as Jon Leicester will start against Florida southpaw Scott Olsen. The game will kick off at 1:05 p.m. ET, and Baltimore will play two road games and one home game after that before they head home to Camden Yards.

Mets name Manuel interim manager
Randolph, two coaches let go after win over Angels
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com
06/17/2008 3:37 AM ET

ANAHEIM -- The Mets dismissed manager Willie Randolph and two coaches early Tuesday morning, bringing a sudden end to weeks of speculation.

Bench coach Jerry Manuel has assumed interim managerial duties.

Roughly two hours after their 9-6 win against the Angels, the Mets announced that Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson and first-base coach Tom Nieto had all been relieved of their duties. The team promoted Ken Oberkfell, Dan Warthen and Luis Aguayo to take their places.

The Mets will make a more formal announcement on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET.
