Obama defends wife on matter of pride
February 19, 2008

BROOKFIELD, Wis. --Democratic Sen. Barack Obama sought Tuesday to clarify his wife's statement that she is proud of the U.S. "for the first time in my adult life." He said her newfound pride is about the political system and was not meant to disparage her country...

First of all, the remark comes across as suggesting that she is now "really proud " of her country only because her husband has a chance of becoming POTUS.

Secondly, any attempt to clarify such a boneheaded remark can only backfire.

They will move her out of the limelight and carry on. Sometimes wives should just shut up.

It may set them back some but I doubt it's going to hurt them as badly as you think so.

Maybe. I haven't seen any sign of that so far.

Since I'm not proud of what america has done under the republicans, perhaps my perspective doesn't represent the electorate.

Except, the majority of the electorate also seems less than proud of what the republicans have done, as far as I can tell.

I'm not that proud of what america did under the Clintons, either. But as I've always said, Clinton was really a republican - as evidenced by the free trade agreements, and his unquestioning support of the corporations.

And waco, which was a classic republican police state action.

I was kind of proud of American unity after 9/11 - but then Bush turned that into a takeover attempt, and ruined everything.

Under Bush, yes. But for 25 years? They're going to take heat on this. Watch.

I don't believe Bill was ever been proud of the United States of America, ...ever...when you have that much hate inside its hard to have a positive outlook on life , that's why he numbs his self-loathing by playing video games

maybe. don't care. and it won't have any effect on the election.

25 years sounds about right to me. But, unlike most people, I've been aware that the end of the oil age was coming for longer than that.

This is the dumbest thing ever, both the people crapping on her, and the people like Bill. She was trying to express how she felt that a black man, especially her husband, could be a serious candidate for president of the US. If you took it as more than that you are too into divisive politics.

As I have said in another post.....the games have begun. They are jerking us
around and pulling the same old same old garbage.

Gee, I just cant imagine how it would be to have a candidate without an agenda
beyond the best interests of our country and not their own personal gain and
issues. I love Alan Keyes!

I pretty much feel the same way about the dealio with mccain the the lobbyist lady.

Don't care. If he banged her, I don't care.

I assume ALL politicians are in bed with the lobbyists to begin with.

I think the timing and the lack of substance and evidence in the hit-report from the NYT is a much more interesting phenomena than the actual theorized 'transgression'.

Now that COULD be a crime. I'd like to see that investigated.

Most of you people aren't old enough to know what if deels like to be a proud citizen...at best, some might have a memory of how to hide under the schooldesk because the Reds are comming...but that doesn't amout to pride as much as partisanship...there is worlds of difference between the two.

I sat on the floor nights listening to FDR speak"can do" about OUR brave country and how we were making the world a better place, and I believed...better yet, IT WAS TRUE.

Then for the next years when all the heroes were in college and then fueling the housing and business boom, we were still proud as Americans...we were the one's who died for what is right and true...we are the one's who because it was was right not to allow europe and the germans to starve, we fed, cared and protected them.

It is a feeling I only visited with John Kennedy and somewhat remembered in the beginning of Big Dog Clinton's reconstruction of a bush disaster...but being an actual asshole, ole bill destroyed himself again. One must anticipate such failure in the artificially constructed character projects.

Obama is the real thing. This man IS what he projects...and Michelle is his equal...together, compared to the clintons, the clintons look like software salesmen...same old shit in a refurbutched box.

What is so depressing about the hillary group is the way they change their tune to whatever they devine is doing good for Obama...of course missing the whole point...its not Obama pollacy, it is what Obame feels, believes, and has loived and strived for, and to anyone who has any connection with their own innards, it obviously shows.

Michelle said exactly what she felt, and I for one and am in total agreement with her...there has been NO Thing for americans to be proud of our country...we excell in destruction of any and all in this world, and we don't do it to uphold our principles, but to protect and grow big business's principle...business is our current US constitution...of what is there to be proud?

"Let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

All this is being spinned as if she meant she was never proud until now. Read it carefully and it suggests she is not good with the limelight and public speaking. All she meant was, this is the first time I've had a chance to speak my pride outloud. The first part of the statement is odd, but obviously its the first time she had a chance to say it, big deal.

If she used a salad fork to eat meat wouldn't the nutjobs focus on that too and question whether she has the appropriate table etiqette to be the first lady. This story is so small that it needs to be ignored.
