My own limited experience is that, you get back what you put out, so to speak, so I've always tried to give the benefit of the doubt to others even if some past experience with them would say I shouldn't.

Oh, I've been called names that aren't fit to be uttered in mixed company, much less on a public forum. I used to get upset over them but I finally grew up and realized that they are just words and only reflect the level of humanity the people who utter them have fallen to. I'm better than they are and refuse to allow them to dictate my standards or control my behavior with their taunts. It's really hard sometimes, but I manage to set a good example for my little boy.
