WASHINGTON - Press one if you think they're dirty tricks. Press two if you think prerecorded telephone messages are devastatingly effective, especially during the final days of a close campaign.

In at least 53 competitive House races, the National Republican Campaign Committee has launched hundreds of thousands of automated telephone calls, known as "robocalls."

Such calls have sparked a handful of complaints to the FCC and underscore the usefulness of the inexpensive — and sometimes overwhelming — political tool.

"As much as people complain about getting automated calls and saying they don't work, every politician is doing them," said Jerry Dorchuck, whose Pennsylvania-based Political Marketing International will make about 200,000 such phone calls each hour for mostly Democratic candidates. "Targeted calls play a key in very close races."

They can single out single women, absentee voters, independents and party faithful with tailored messages, but they also can frustrate voters. Sometimes, the latter is their goal.

Bruce Jacobson, a software engineer from Ardmore, Pa., received three prerecorded messages in four hours. Each began, "Hello, I'm calling with information about Lois Murphy," the Democrat running against two-term incumbent Rep. Jim Gerlach (news, bio, voting record) in the Philadelphia-area district.

"Basically, they go on to slam Lois," said Jacobson, who has filed a complaint with the FCC because the source of the call isn't immediately known.

FCC rules say all prerecorded messages must "at the beginning of the message, state clearly the identity of the business, individual, or other entity that is responsible for initiating the call." During or after the message, they must give the telephone number of the caller.
Basically Dubya appoints people to the FCC and then the GOP breaks the rules of the FCC. Are these the people we really want in control of a democracy?

Personally if I got an automated call like this from anyone they'd loose my vote.

Note that the calls are authorized by the Rep Committee but they target democratic candidates - its being done to turn the democratic voters against their own parties candidate out of disgust with the calls - same thing they did last election by flooding the call centers so that no one could get info on polling place times

Ive received calls from Republicans and Democrats of this nature. Illegal or not, they are annoying. My mind was made up in the 2000 primary about Dubbya-he is a slandering useless human being.
I never voted for Clinton and I could never bring myself to vote for Occidental poster boy Al Gore. Dubbya and Gore were/are the same. Sure, Gore comes off as possibly nicer, but after NAFTA-forget it,he lost my vote.
To the point-these phone calls have no bearing on me. Mailings have no bearing on me. What does? The state of our nation. I think our country has been sunk by weak leadership on both sides of the aisle. Go ahead, tell me what leader in either party can save this country? No phone call can do that-in the same breath, neither can a mailing.
This time I will vote Democrat across the board just like in 2000(except for president) ,2002 and 2004.Not because I think the party can save this country, not because of some phone call and not because of a mailing.I will vote Democrat across the board because my choice is religious and social bgotry or Democrat. Please, explain 1 redeeming factor concerning Rick Santorum-PLEASE! He has none. For that matter, explain 1 PA. republican who is worth my vote.
No amount of phone calls will change my vote. No amount of mailings or commercials will change my vote.
So like any other telemarketing call, I hang up

I wonder how they get around the no-call list requirements :)

If you read the no-call list any company who has a business relationship with you(ie-your credit card company, mortgage company, insureance, etc) can call. Also, political calls are not soliciting, they are listed as i9nformative calls, hence they do not fall under the no call list.
What, did you think politicians wouldnt have a way around the law for themselves?

If I get one of those recording calls I vote for the other guy. If the other guy calls I vote for the first guy.

If they call on the business line, I send a bill …$6.67/minute. No one has ever paid but it feels good to send candidate so-and-so a bill for “services rendered”.

Now if the call is live I have phone sex.
