well - I guess I know the real reason for flying the flag upside down since I used to teach flag etiquette - but then there are some that think that you should never fly it upside down - I assume they dont know the reason for it.

I do know of one farmer that was flying it upside down for a very good reason in his mind (the distress signal for the country) and was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct - of course thats gonna get dropped as soon as the ACLU makes mince meat out of that court

exarmyranger - yeah - while I totally agree with the respecting the flag (hell I wouldnt have taught it so long) and I also have no problem with someone burning it to show protest as a matter of free speech - but I do NOT like it when people that dont know the proper ways of using the flag (no one here implicated in that statement BTW) think that certain uses of symbolism works - cause it doesnt.

I get just as pissed at seeing someone fly it upside down for the wrong reason (hell Ive flown it upside down for the right reason) as I do seeing the US president walking on it (of course it should never have been placed as an emblem on the ground anyway) - or writing his autograph on minature flags and handing them out - these are all examples of acts against the code of the flag and it irks me to no end to have that type of example set for the next generation of young citizens coming up (they sure arent learning citizenship in school anymore)

Betty - I think the point that he was trying to make wasnt really directed at you as much as the originator of the avatar probably not understanding the meaning of a flag in that position - its a very specific signal to people that know the flag code and actually requires a very specific action to be taken - unfortunately its been blurred by society as a whole not giving a shit or more importantly - not being taught

My opinion (FWIW) is that you can show protest through burning the flag all ya want - and I guarantee you that I would support anyones right to do that - but dont take something that you dont understand and make it mean something else - its not a good direction to take :) Again - not intented to be pointed at anyone in particular - just a general observation on society
