Mortgage Sector Cut 86,000 Jobs in 2007

More Than 86,000 Mortgage Jobs Were Eliminated in 2007, With Countrywide Leading the Cuts

DALLAS (AP) -- More than 86,000 mortgage jobs were cut in 2007 because of the weakening real estate market, according to a new report released Monday by MortgageDaily.com.

Countrywide Financial Corp., the nation's largest lender, shed the most staff in 2007. Net job losses at the Calabasas, Calif.-based lender totaled 11,665, or about 14 percent of all mortgage jobs lost during the year.

The numbers would have been worse, if not for JPMorgan Chase & Co. adding 4,465 mortgage jobs in 2007.

The mortgage industry faced a tumultuous year as housing prices declined and delinquencies and defaults rose rapidly, especially among subprime mortgages given to customers with poor credit and among home equity products.

California, where dozens of mortgage lenders are based, was the state hit hardest by the downturn. Nearly 16,000 mortgage jobs were cut in California in 2007. California was home to one of the nation's largest subprime lenders, New Century Financial Corp., before it filed for bankruptcy protection in April 2007. New Century's closing led to 5,200 lost jobs.

MortgageDaily.com expects the job cuts to continue but slow in the coming year.

"While more layoffs are anticipated for the mortgage sector during 2008, we expect the pace of job cuts to slow significantly," Sam Garcia, publisher of MortgageDaily.com, said in a statement. "In addition, employment growth is projected in mortgage servicing as delinquencies and foreclosures rise."

MortgageDaily.com analyzed layoffs and hirings involving at least 50 people at 205 mortgage companies in 2007 for the study.http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080107/mortgage_jobs.html?.v=1

I can be glib from time to time, but this is sobering.
One can only hope that other sectors of the economy expand rapidly, perhaps hopefully alternative energy sectors.

Maybe something no one has yet imagined will open up?

Yes but the USDA has created 1.5 Million jobs using tax payer dollars. I know that would seem to be very socialist but our economy is free market and strong. After all, shouldn't all jobs be government created?

Good question disrupter. The Republicans have turned us into a net food importer!!! Can you imagine. It's fact. We now import more food than we produce. We, the USA, the world's grocery store is now a net food importer. Incredible, but true.

According to the USDA they have created 1.5 Million jobs using our tax dollars. So when the White House claims the creation of 8 Million jobs you have to keep in mind that 18% of those was created through this government program.

Doesn't sound like a strong economy to me but more like socialism.

Its obscene that we import anything beyond a delicacy from anywhere on the
face of the globe. It seems that we are not even smart enough to know when
we are at great risk on a number of fronts!!

Yeah, it was disturbing to find of the new jobs created recently that many
are government jobs! Wonder why that doesnt worry more people?

There is always a sunny side to anything. The mortgage ...crisis(?) has
sent some illegals home because of the downturn. Adios Jose'!
Or will they now be used to put into IT or brain surgery?

Because most people only listen to the programmed responses from the administration. There's another thread were people are touting the job growth numbers as if they were market created. Either they are ignoring the number of socialist created jobs because they make their case look weak or they don't have enough information and should not even comment until they educate themselves further on the issue.

IMO anything the administration/government says should be viewed as most
likely a lie or manipulation of the populace to keep us from knowing what is
really going on.
