Wow, this one is a bit of a shock, it's right in the Pa. Constitution.

http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Constitution.html

Religion
Section 4.
No person who acknowledges the being of a God and a future state of rewards and punishments shall, on account of his religious sentiments, be disqualified to hold any office or place of trust or profit under this Commonwealth.

Which says basically if you believe in God, Heaven, and Hell you can hold office - if you don't, you can be disqualified from office.

I wonder what the hell place of trust or profit is supposed to mean - place of trust could mean something like being a judge, or a notary public, or a guardian of a child.

Or profit is even harder to interpret - does this mean if you're an atheist you can't get Pa government contracts, or does it mean you aren't allowed to make a profit in the state, which would mean, to be self-employed?

Freaky. I wonder how many other states have similar language in their constitutions?

Place of trust is usually given to mean the teachers, policemen, etc etc - "protectors of the people" and people others would put their trust in for anything

Also I believe you are misreading the article - it seems to state that no one can be discriminated upon for having their belief (including heaven and hell) - and probably (would have to check this) is a result of most of the original states being Deist or non-religious - while some states wanted to make sure they werent in any way persecuted for stating they "had religion" - there was quite an argument about that around the time of the Constitution since most signers couldnt stand religion - and wanted it out of all forms of government
