At least 45 people were killed, many of them schoolchildren, after two huge car bombs exploded in the centre of the Algerian capital Algiers this morning.
One of the blasts took place near a school bus next to the Supreme Court building in central Algiers, killing 30, while a second bomb killed 15 outside the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in the residential area of Hydra, popular with foreign residents of the city. The blasts, believed to have been carried out by Islamist extremists, took place minutes apart.
Although no group has yet claimed responsibility, the bombs bear the hallmark of splinter groups who claim to be affiliated to al-Qaeda in Algeria. Extremists are also believed to be behind three deadly bombings earlier this year, taking scores of victims.
Yazid Zerhouni, the Algerian Interior Minister, said that the blasts were just minutes apart. "The death toll is very high"
