Wednesday , 28 /11 /2007 Time 11:37:57
Baghdad, Nov 26, (VOI) – The Iraqi government will begin sending 20 buses to carry Iraqis wishing to return home from Syria on Tuesday, a government spokesman said.
"Buses belonging to the Land Transport Company will set out from different points in the Syrian capital Damascus carrying Iraqis who wish to return home," an official spokesman for the Iraqi government, Ali al-Dabbagh, said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The step comes following the return of relative calm in Iraq, which encouraged many Iraqi families to return from Syria.
According to statistics released by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, there are currently 1.2 million Iraqi refugees in Syria. A few days ago, the Iraqi government said it would pay $15 million to the Syrian government in return for hosting Iraqi refugees.
