View Full Version : "How It All Ends" - understanding the risk management logic of climate change - video
Here's an excellent video - the pascal's wager logic of the climate change debate.
yes, I know, you can't get a winger to pay attention to science, the scientific method, and technology and engineering, so it's preaching to the choir.
But, it's a fun video, well worth watching, and the logic is undeniable, even if you are a winger. A little long, but amusing enough to make it bearable.

Of course, the difference between the original pascals wager and the risk management of climate change is that there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that there is a hell of eternal damnation.
But, there are tens of millions of measurements that provide evidence that climate change is happening and happening faster than anyone believed possible.
Weather disasters have quadrupled in the last 20 years, Oxfam, a leading british charity says.
yes, some of these disaster happen because there are more people crowded into the coasts and in other environmentally risky areas (i.e. near water). So, demographics is to blame as well as global warming.
Asia has been getting pounded by repeated typhoons.
Sucks to be them.

LONDON (Reuters) - Weather-related disasters have quadrupled over the last two decades, a leading British charity said in a report published on Sunday.
From an average of 120 disasters a year in the early 1980s, there are now as many as 500, with Oxfam attributing the rise to unpredictable weather conditions cause by global warming.
"This year we have seen floods in South Asia, across the breadth of Africa and Mexico that have affected more than 250 million people," said Oxfam's director Barbara Stocking.
"This is no freak year. It follows a pattern of more frequent, more erratic, more unpredictable and more extreme weather events that are affecting more people.
There is no climate change. Destroying oxygen producing plants will have no effect on the climate at all. Dumping waste into The Chesapeake Bay will have no effect because it's huge.
Of course we're having a negative impact on the environment. You have to be brain dead to not see it.
The question is how much of an effect are we having?

Very sensible. And amusing.

I know what I am going to say is redundant, but, the post about "managing
in climate change" is a valid issue. The climate is changing, it has always
changed and will always change. The issue is are we going to adapt or
perish? The earth will survive, we may not. Its all in adapting and finding
ways to fill our needs to survive. We can control NOTHING past that.
We can clean up our act but at the same time not be screwed blind by
politicians and special interest groups that profit from fear.

You are correct. Unfortunately that's why the only option that many people see is more drilling for oil. Any time there's a discussion about long term energy plans and people talk about the short term options of drilling more oil wells you know they've come under the programming of the political machines and conservative media groups.
There's nothing long term about oil.

Like who, for example?
I'd bet money we'd have very different lists of who intends to profit from fear.

First name off the top of my head is Gore. The $$ is pouring in from his
mythical works of film and the written word and his speaking gigs. The
next on my list would be most every politician at the hog trough in WA.
None are exempt. Our best interests have not been served by our
so called "public servants" in so long I cant even remember when.
Fear mongering is a common practice when it serves the purpose of
scaring the other side into voting for his/hers/its side. This "green"
movement will lose its luster and most will return to business as usual.
Hopefully some scientist or physicist will have been working on new
and efficient forms of energy and that will be a good thing.
Of course if one thinks that we are causing clilmate change then I would
wonder how after "we" have become green.....what about China and India?
Are their pollutants less offensive than ours?? Thats when the conspiracy
theories come in which may just have some merit.
