Actually I believe they are trying to defend the US Constitution interpretations which says freedom FROM religion - not religious freedom

That cross has been a San Diego landmark for over 50 years, 76 percent of San Diegan's voted to leave the cross up that should have been the end of the debate.
The best view of San Diego, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean is from the Mount Soledad Memorial, I've been to it many times and have never seen anyone fixating on the cross.
