Iraqi Islamic Party: “Al Qaeda is Defeated”

“Al Qaeda in Iraq is defeated,” according to Sheik Omar Jabouri, spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Party and a member of the widespread and influential Jabouri Tribe. Speaking through an interpreter at a 31 October meeting at the Iraqi Islamic Party headquarters in downtown Baghdad, Sheik Omar said that al Qaeda had been “defeated mentally, and therefore is defeated physically,” referring to how clear it has become that the terrorist group’s tactics have backfired.

Operatives who could once disappear back into the crowd after committing an increasingly atrocious attack no longer find safe haven among the Iraqis who live in the southern part of Baghdad. They are being hunted down and killed. Or, if they are lucky, captured by Americans.

Colonel Ricky Gibbs, the American brigade commander with responsibility for the Rashid District in south Baghdad today told me, “So goes South Baghdad goes Baghdad.” General Petraeus had told me similar things about the importance of South Baghdad. In fact, Rashid is quickly developing into what might be one of the final serious battlegrounds of the war.

During the meeting, another member of the Iraqi Islamic Party said that al Qaeda has changed its strategy now that fomenting civil war between Sunni and Shia has backfired. Al Qaeda has shifted targets, now trying to generate friction between tribes. This time, however, the tribes are onto the game early, and they are not playing.

Sheik Omar, who has gained the respect of American combat leaders for his intelligence and organizational skills, said the tough line against al Qaeda is also enforced at the tribal level. According to Sheik Omar, the Jabouri tribe, too, is actively committed to destroying al Qaeda. So much so, that Jabouri tribal leaders have decided they would “kill their own sons” if any aided al Qaeda. To underscore the point, he went on to say that about 70 Jabouri “sons” had been killed by the Jabouri tribe so far.

In addition to brigade commander Colonel Ricky Gibbs, four of his battalion commanders were also present: Lieutenant Colonels James Crider, Patrick Frank, Stephen Michael and Myron Reineke. Sheik Omar expressed deep gratitude for their assistance.

Omar’s influence extends beyond tribal and party levels, to include important channels within the Iraqi government and the US military in Baghdad, as evidenced by the agenda of the hours-long meeting. But for the talk about al Qaeda, the focus was mostly on other topics, such as returning displaced persons to their homes, efficiently delivering basic services and jumpstarting the economy.

In fact, more and more meetings in Iraq are turning to day-to-day business, and less time is required on military and security topics like targeting and addressing intelligence-type matters, which until recently monopolized most meetings across Iraq.Michael Yon does not receive funding or financial support from Fox News, or from any network, movie, book or television deals at this time. Excellent! I love hearing good news come out of Iraq.

If anyone is interested, Here is an audio link (http://hotair.com/archives/2007/11/01/audio-michael-yon-on-the-defeat-of-al-qaeda-in-iraq/) to the interview John Gibson did with Michael Yon on his radio show today (Thursday). It's great stuff.

If this isn't another one of those infamous "Mission Accomplished" debacles then this is good news. But trust the right to come up a day late and a dollar short, or a thousand days late and a trillion dollars short.

So, when do we bring the troops home?

This was a tribal leader declaring that al qaida in Iraq was defeated. For the exact reason you stated, the United States hasn't made such an announcement. According to Michael Yon, if things keep going as they have been, it won't be too long before we also make that declaration.

If you haven't already UserName, you should listen to that interview with Yon. He has been over there for a damned long time and his description of what's taking place on the ground over there is very encouraging. It really is good news for a change and it sure as hell put a smile on my face.

Well, there was this:

Which more or less leads one to understand that it isn't over YET. So, be happy but with a grain of salt too. This was a meeting of Islamic Party heads, and could very well be more optimistic than reality based.

I don't think, and I could be wrong, that Bush is going to want to make the mistake of announcing Mission Accomplished, the War is Won before it's proven that the Iraq military and police can stand on their own AND the government has met their commitments to the U.S. And from ALL reports, they aren't even close to that yet.

Being "over there" carries a lot of weight for me. I hate it but if its working
and those who know much more than I say it is, then hurray, we are on the
right track.

I caught a clip last night and I didnt catch the first part but did catch how
the Iraqis finally realized the US wasnt leaving, came forth and told the
soldiers where caches of arms were and who was who in the area.

I wish this had been done earlier. Many lives would have been saved,
but Im not military so I only see it from a distance. The ones there
know whats going on and there is some reason so many have re upped (?).
I cannot fathom such dedication to something that looks so bad from the
outside! I still wish it would be over.

What makes it so difficult for those of us on the outside is that the GOP has been caught lying, so we don't trust them anymore. Furthermore, most people already know that any picture ops and speeches with the troops are pre-arranged and rehearsed.

So all we mainly hear from so called "conservative" reporters, etc. etc. is the downplay of any negatives and the rah, rah stories.

On the other side, those so called "liberal" reporters, etc. etc. are going after the negative stories and saying it's all that way.

The truth lies someplace inbetween the two extremes. :winkwink:

So does that mean that the administration doesn't need the extra $200,000,000,000 that he's asking for?

Something major they've started doing is embedding anthropologists as cultural advisors. It goes a long way understanding the sensitivities of the culture you're working with.

I read about that a while back. They started it in Afghanistan and carried it over to Iraq.

It was very interesting.
