Washington State lawmaker Richard Curtis resigned his office tonight after a man he allegedly paid for sex spoke to the media about the encounter. Curtis is the third conservative lawmaker in just as many months to resign amid allegations of soliciting gay sex. CNN noted similarities between the seemingly 'pressured' resignations in this and other Republican scandals involving homosexuality.

"I sincerely apologize for any pain my actions may have caused," Curtis wrote in a statement. "This has been damaging to my family, and I don't want to subject them to any additional pain that might result from carrying out this matter under the scrutiny that comes with holding public office."

You would think that in a consumer culture people would become trained by experience to be skeptical of deceptive advertising. But i don't know why but in the USA we seem to get stupider rather than more wise & educated.

This is what really kills me:

In the 1960's, many Democrats became Republicans because they lost the South on the civil rights issue. So why don't all these outed Republicans avoid all this embarrassment and resignation by switch-hitting? (poor choice of words?)

It seems to me the main conflict ibetween party ideology and a representatives personal lifestyle. There isn't that much difference between base conervatives and Democrats--Clinton represented a conservative state and worked nationally on largely conservative platforms, even (NAFTA, huge military spending, pro-business, welfare reform, and he basically copped-out on gays in the military).

They have so little to give up, and yet they're so politically self-destructive. That's just...weird coming from people who would usually do anything to stay in office.

Many homosexuals identify themselves as queers and the LGBT community is often reffered to as the queer community as a loose shorthand. Many lesbians refer to themselves as dykes, now, too.

Queer isn't a "racist" type label Grim, even though you are trying really hard to make it sound like one. It's a way of saying with one word that it's a group of individuals with different sexual orientations than that of the masses. In this case, homosexuals.
