Cheney’s Staff Says He Never Saw Confederate Flag (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/30/cheneys-staff-says-he-never-saw-confederate-flag/?hp)
By Sewell Chan

Vice President Dick Cheney is embroiled in yet another hunting-related controversy.

The vice president made a daylong hunting trip on Monday to the Clove Valley Rod and Gun Club, an exclusive mountainside establishment on 4,000 acres in Union Vale, N.Y., about 15 miles east of Poughkeepsie, in Dutchess County. Only members and their guests may hunt on the property; an annual membership is said to cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Reporters who covered Mr. Cheney’s visit on Monday — including Fernanda Santos of The Times — were not permitted to enter the grounds of the hunting estate. But at least one eagle-eyed photographer captured images of a Confederate battle flag — about 3 feet by 5 feet in dimension — hanging in plain view in a garage attached to the club’s headquarters. The Daily News captured images of the flag. The New York Post stoked the controversy today with the headline: “V.P.’s Hunting Gear: Dead-Eye Dick Cheney in Dixie-Flag Flap.”

In a brief interview this morning, a spokeswoman for Mr. Cheney told us that neither the vice president nor anyone in his entourage had seen the flag.
“Until this issue was raised by the press last night, no one in our office was aware there was such a flag,” said the spokeswoman, Megan M. Mitchell. “The vice president did not see a flag, nor did anyone on his staff traveling with him in New York.”

Asked whether Mr. Cheney had an opinion about the flag’s being displayed, Ms. Mitchell replied, “Bottom line, he didn’t see the flag.” Asked whether the vice president had views in general on the appropriateness of displaying the Confederate battle flag, she said, “I haven’t had a chance to talk with him about that.”

In February 2006, the vice president shot and wounded Harry M. Whittington, a lawyer and campaign contributor, while the two men were hunting quail at a South Texas ranch. Mr. Whittington suffered a minor heart attack but recovered. The shooting — and some subsequent miscommunication — caused some political heartburn for the White House. The Times published a detailed chronology of the shooting. Mr. Cheney took full responsibility for the shooting.

Officials at the Clove Valley Rod and Gun Club have not responded yet to a telephone message requesting comment.

The hunting club is best known for its pheasants and ducks. According to “The Clove Valley Rod and Gun Club History,” a history written and published by two of the club’s members, Betty and Bill White, Clove Valley tried to introduce quail at least twice, with no success.

The Rev. Al Sharpton issued a statement last night that read, in part:

I call on Vice President Cheney to leave immediately, denounce the club, and apologize for going to a club that represents lynching, hate, and murder to black people. In this age of Jena, La., events and hangman nooses all over the country, for the Vice President to relax under the flag of the hangman nooses is an unpardonable insult to all Americans, particularly blacks. He ought to leave immediately, call for the flag to be brought down at once, and apologize for being connected to an institution that would be insensitive enough to fly it in the first place. What is interesting to me is that this is not even in the South that it is flying. The club owners must identify with the philosophy of the Confederacy because they can’t say that they are a historic club that 200 years ago was a part of the Confederacy since New York was never a Confederate state.

In a phone interview today, Mr. Sharpton elaborated a bit further. He expressed incredulity that Mr. Cheney’s security detail would not have noticed — or been bothered by — the presence of the flag. “It is hard to believe, with a security team and detail searching everywhere the vice president goes in advance, that he would not want to know how this was there or how the security team could not have seen this as inappropriate and insulting,” he said, adding, “You either have security incompetence or security insensitivity.”

Mr. Sharpton said it was not enough for Mr. Cheney’s staff to say the vice president had not seen the flag. “He should disavow the flag and the location,” Mr. Sharpton said, referring to the country club. “Americans need to know where he stands on this.”

V.P.'S HUNTING GEAR
DEAD-EYE DICKCHENEY IN DIXIE-FLAG FLAP

By AUSTIN FENNER
FUDD & GUTS:"Wascal" Dick Cheney shrewdly had an ambulance in tow yesterday.

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10302007/photos/news003.jpg

October 30, 2007 -- Dick Cheney went a- hunting for pheasant in Dutchess County yester day, trailed by an ambulance embedded in a 15-SUV entourage in case the vice president's ticker - or trigger finger - went awry.

But the veep only shot him self in the foot - by visiting the exclusive Clove Valley Rod & Gun Club in Union Vale, a sprawling preserve nestled along the western side of Clove Mountain, where a 5-foot-by-5-foot Confederate flag hung in a garage attached to the club headquarters.

The Stars and Bars were clearly visible from the open-doored garage; there were no signs of the Stars and Stripes elsewhere.

"I am calling on Vice President Cheney to . . . denounce the club and apologize for going to a club that represents lynching, hate and murder to black people," the Rev. Al Sharpton said in a statement.

"In this age of Jena and hangmen nooses all over the country, for the vice president to relax under the flag of the hangmen nooses is an unpardonable insult to all Americans, particularly blacks."

A Cheney spokesman said the vice president never saw the flag.

And for most in this small town of 4,500, the visit was barely noteworthy.

"There really wasn't that much hoopla," said Town Supervisor Lisette Hitsman.

"They only have to block off three town roads."

Not that Cheney wasn't noticed.

"When all of a sudden you have a bunch of white SUVs, then some black SUVs, then a whole lot of men with dark glasses, we knew it was Dick Cheney," Hitsman said.

She noted the town's all-volunteer fire and rescue company was at-the-ready.

Cheney spent about six hours hunting, enjoying near-perfect temperatures in the 50s. He was gone by 3:45 p.m.

Deer hunter Bill Tryon, 48, who works on Clove Road, where Cheney's motorcade sped by in the morning, said he had no problem with the veep taking aim at the local game.

"As long as he doesn't shoot anyone in the ass," Tryon said.

You gotta be shitting me. This is big news? Was it supposed to be his personal flag or something? Do you think he's a member because he has friends there and likes to hunt there? Or do you think he's a member just because they're racist.

To anyone I've seen associated with it, that flag to them represents being a rebel against the federal government telling them what to do. Not specifically racism. Now, I think it's dated and rather immature. But somebody being offended has to determine whether they are a racist organization to begin with.

Has anybody even questioned whether they have any black members or not?

Too many people digging for anything they can. Hey, maybe the owner was born in the South. Anybody ever think of that?

Show me they exclude minorities from membership, and then I'll care.

BTW, I don't like Cheney. But it seems a bit too National Enquirer-ish, at this point.

Also, where exactly was this flag in the garage? I don't imagine such a large place has a small garage. "Clearly visible" and "plain view" are pretty subjective terms. And we still have to establish that they exclude minorities. And if they don't how do those members feel about it? Otherwise, it's just a flag that somebody put up.

Most people don't display that flag for racist reasons anymore. Some do, I know, but they are in the minority, and also idiots. Most simply display it to say they are southern, nothing more and nothing less. Perhaps the ranch is owned by a southerner who wants to say he was born in the south, what they are doing in N.Y.? I don't know.

I do know people put a lot more meaning to that flag than there really is, or ever was. While it was under consideration to be the flag of the confederate states, the war was lost long before the choice was made. Therefore, it has never been anything more than a battle flag.

They are all over the place here. And actually, they can have that double meaning though sane people understand it's the rebellion thing not a racist thing at all.

However, there are a lot of blacks in the south who do take offence to it. So it does matter where you are when you see one.

I imagine at $10K a pop, that club excludes a lot of people, blacks included. And I doubt it was a messy garage the flag was hung in and most likely the flag was clearly visible. But unless you are sensitive to that kind of double meaning behind it, and Cheney running with a rich crowd probably has never been exposed to a crowd that would be, wouldn't.

Here's a picture of that flag:

I think the story was funny, much more fun than Paris Hilton suddenly turning into Mother Teresa.

This is stupid.

The damned flag is half the size they said it was, looking like it's in more of a tool shed than a garage. It probably belongs to one of the grounds keepers - you know, like Bill Murray in Caddyshack.

Also, this was Cheney's second hunting trip there, for nine hours. The only other time he was there was in 2001.

The whole story is a lame-ass farce, IMO.

Lady Mo, it looks like you were scraping the bottom of the barrel on this one.

10 grand...... If I spent that kind of cash on a hunting trip, I'd better be in Africa and bag a bigfoot. It does seem as though the secret service would of checked the place out and removed anything that might of caused a problem. But then, who'd of imagined such a fuss over the equivalent of a poster hanging on a door. Cheney is far from the best vp we ever had, but giving him greef for a wall hanging that he had nothing to do with is realy digging from the bottom.

You really need to lighten up a little and stop taking things here so seriously. How many LOL's and laughing smilies must one make in their posts before you catch a clue I thought the story making headlines was funny?

No wonder Conservatives are no fun. You guys are as uptight and an overstrung guitar.

hehehe.. I did find it funny to see an ambulance following close behind him. I couldn't go out in the field with somebody that showed up with a medical team. I'd have to leave, and take the road that was farthest from that field.
:lmao2:
I wonder if somebody had a "DON"T SHOOT ME, VP!!" t-shirt on. :truce: :lmao2:

LOL, I nearly had tears in my eyes over the ambulance. Too funny. I wonder if he brings one along now every time he goes hunting "just in case". :lmao2:

I don't know about the t-shirts but remember what one guy said in interview:

I'll bet for those 6 hours, everyone in town wore bright orange and stayed as far away as possible.

hahaha, If he'd a shot him in the ass there probably wouldn't have been such a scandal. But the man dern near killed somebody. Yea, if he decides to do some hunting on Ft. Bragg, I belive I'm gonna drag my computer and tv down to the basement and stay there till he's gone. I don't have a lot of faith in his ability to see bright orange without getting excited.

So true.

You better bring in the pets too. God knows, with his eyesight, that Chihuahua might just look like a Mule deer in his sites.

His crimes are beyond counting.

It certainly won't hurt what's left of the Repub base, they are all white racists & closet racists by now. Any sane Republicans have either left the party or are at least steering clear of Bush & Cheney.
