The Earth may be heading for the sixth "mass extinction event" in history, researchers reported.
A team led by Anthony Barnosky, a paleobiologist at the University of California-Berkeley, said the die-off is in its beginning stages and there is time to preserve habitats and retain biodiversity. The previous five extinctions occurred between 443 million and 65 million years ago, including one that wiped out dinosaurs. Each resulted in at least 75% of species dying off over thousands of years.
