Senator Bill Frist, the Republican majority leader, said that he and his Bush allies in the White House will initiate a filibuster if necessary to help President Bush get his version of the legislation dealing with terrorist detainee procedures. Frist hopes to force opposing Senators Warner, McCain, and Graham, all members of his own Republican party, to reconsider their proposal on this matter. Frist may have an up hill battle as other Republican senators have lined up behind the McCain team.

Frist has acknowledged that the McCain team, whom are against amending the original Geneva Convention and Common Article 3, does have the majority support at this point of the discussion. However, in a very arrogant fashion, which is not unusual for this senator and his Chief of Staff Eric Ueland, Senator Frist chirped to the press that the trio’s proposed bill is “unacceptable despite majority support.” Wow, what arrogance coming from a guy who never served one day in uniform, never set foot in a combat area as a soldier, and has never experienced torture as a prisoner of war in the hands of the enemy. Senators Warner, McCain, and Graham have all been in uniform and McCain suffered at the hands of the North Vietnamese for 5 ½ years. There is no doubt that this trio of senators have credibility on this matter where Frist does not even come close.

Born and raised in Nashville, Bill Frist graduated in 1974 from Princeton University where he specialized in health care policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Well, that’s great. In the same year, I graduated from college and entered the U.S. Army for active duty. According to Mr. Frist’s own official biography, he never served in the military in any form or fashion. I love these guys who have never been in military uniform but like to tell us why we need to rewrite and/or amend portions of the Geneva Convention.

Senator Frist is more concerned about his political positioning for a run as the Republican candidate for the presidency in November of 2007. He is trying to embarrass his potential opponents, especially Senator John McCain. Frist is not concerned your our sons and daughters who are on the front lines in the war on terror. In fact, it appears Frist has three sons of his own, who appear to be 18 years of age, or close to it. I wonder if he would feel the same way about detainee procedures if his sons were serving in the U.S. military, a situation which is not likely to occur. Instead, they would rather hunt deer together. Over the past 2 weeks, 49 men and women of the U.S. military will never get that chance to go hunting with their dads, as they made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

We need to support our troops in foreign fields of terror. One way is not to change the Geneva Convention Common Article 3. McCain and his supporters are right, they’ve been in the real fight and they understand the issue.
