He wants to raise a shit ton of money, spend half of it on a limp campaign and pocket the rest.

I didn't think he would... He would make a good candidate, but didn't stand a chance against Rudy, Fred or McCain.

Do conservatives actually like Fred Thompson? From what I can gather they just seem to think he's full of shit.

I don't know about conservatives in general, but I like him ok. I still have no preference in that race. I tend to like Rudy or Fred so far. McCain is just too damned old and Romney has that same slick, used car salesman feel to him the way Bill Clinton did. You know, that "Say anything to get elected" personality.
You never know though. It's just way too early for me to seriously analyze any of the candidates yet.

Aside from his ability to really throw punches when it came to partisanship - I actually admire and respect Newt a lot moe than any of the other Rep candidates - Ive seen him in real debates and he is intelligent and has an excellent grasp on issues - and when not fighting against someone from the other side of the aisle is quite liberal in his beliefs on social issues - although very conservative on money - which makes him a good pick in my opinion.
As far as the other candidates - although its really way too early to pick anyone since so far no one on either side has really stated an all out platform - Rudy in my book is probably the worst - especially after that stupid gesture he did in Ca with the $9.11 a plate dinner - just stupid - and Fred didnt do anything when he was in congress except sit there and collect a check - no reason to think that he would do otherwise in the future. Romney is just a waste as far as Im concerned. It would be nice to see soemone like Newt actually run for the Rep side - it would be good to hear a meaningful debate for once

I think he was waiting to see if Fred Thompson would run. Once Fred announced, he decided it would actually be a campaign and Fred would probably win against him.
In other words, there's finally a conservative running, so why muddy the waters and deplete the amount of funds people can get?

Thats been confusing me - I guess people will vote for Fred based on recognizing him as an actor - but the republican base would seem to have some real issues with some of his stances especially in the christian right movement with his opposing the constitutional amendment of marriage - I know Dobson railed him on it as well as his leniency on bin Laden thinking that he deserves due process if caught - which didnt seem to sit well with some of the hard line hawks

The "Christians" do not run the Republican Party. This is a lie that's been propagated on the huddled masses of the Democrat Party to get them to vote out of fear of a state run religion for Democrats.
People who believe in small government, people who want to conserve nature, people who believe that states, not feds should be running society, people who want the freedom to express themselves in any way manner or shape without government intervention and without forcing their expressions on others run the Republican Party.
Which is why when our politicians in the Republican Party failed to live up to the mandates they were given by the people who run them, they were kicked out of office in 2006.
Likewise, Fred Thompson, being a human being who can think for himself, who does not espouse all of the mandates of the Republican base is having a hard time getting the money he wants to run, but, he's doing much better then his contenders because he is able to rally more people behind him.
I think our best chances to win in a landslide would be if someone like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan or any other really core conservative were to run for President. After all, the President is Chief Diplomant, Commander in Chief and government watch dog only. He is not chief accountant, chief legislator, or anything else that the media has portrayed the president being. He is equal in power to the US Congress and the US Supreme Court, likewise each of those are equal to the others as well. This means our elected President should always press for smaller government, lesser taxes, forcing the massive organizations shoved forward by the other branches to slow down and cease operations.
I think Fred is for that. Honestly, I think if I was elected president and given martial law for 15 minutes, I could cut taxes to 2% sales taxes nation wide and have a surplus. Just to give you an idea on how small I think the national level government should be.

Hes refreshing and not as FOS as you think. The rest of the field is so very
deficient in so many areas, I think this is Freds to lose....the Pub candidacy
that is.
