Guess GM wants to level the sought after "level playing field". Americas
manufacturing will level off to the third world country that is invading us.
GMs labor costs will go down but does anyone think for one minute that
their profits will not soar? The price of their cars and trucks will never go
down, only workers standard of living.

I'd sure like to see one union, any union win one.

Wouldnt you say the teachers union has it sewn up???
The problems for GM are far more serious then just this strike.
They need to purchase goods from over seas to make cars here. The weak dollar is making costs 40% higher then competitors in other countries have to pay.
They also haven't had any new innovations in decades. They can't make the small cars or hybrids that are becoming more in demand. They can only make big cars and with the weak dollar those things are costing more to make.

I don't know. All the big 3 were building large trucks and SUVs.That was what was in demand before the gas crunch. GM makes smaller cars such as the Chevolet cobalt and I thought they had some hybrids in the making...will have to check that out again.

Think globally. Remember we're talking about a global economy. The best selling cars are mid size sedans. The Ford Taurus does OK but the Camry, Civic and Altima are way ahead in sales.
The US based GM plants have based everything on a narrow market that is now declining. Sure they can produce a hybrid but not one that can compete with the prius or other models by manufacturers that have been paying attention to the changing market.
The weak dollar is only an advantage if you can buy your materials locally and export them for sales. If you have to but materials from over seas and sale your products locally then you're basically 40% higher then everyone else.
Besides, every knew in in February 2001 that gas prices were going to soar.

Good points..I wasn't thinking globally.
