Friends on the Hill have been tracking movement in the polls on Iraq since General Petreaus' testimony last week and it turns out that a majority of Americans now say

(1) they have a favorable opinion of General Petraeus (I guess that means they were not coninced that he "betrayed" America),
(2) they think he has the right plan for Iraq,
(3) they approve his recommendations for continuing the struggle against al-Qaeda and Iranian-backed militias, and
(4) if he asks for troop levels to remain in place longer, they would approve that.

More specifically, a week after General Petraeus reported to Congress on the the progress of his new strategy,

a Gallup poll reports that 61 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of General Petraeus, up 9 percent in just one week.

Fifty-four percent of those surveyed said they believe Petraeus' plan for removing troops is the right pace or too quick. By contrast, only 33 percent view the withdrawal as moving too slowly.

Pew reports that nationally “57 percent of Americans who read or heard about Petraeus' testimony approved of his recommendations for Iraq, while only 28 percent of respondents said they disapprove. A majority of those surveyed (51 percent) also said they believe he presented the situation as it really is.

US News & World Report’s “Political Bulletin” highlighted polling that found when “[a]sked, ‘If General Petraeus asks for the troop level to remain in place for another nine months, would you approve or disapprove this proposal,’ 54% approve it; 43% disapprove. Independents track the overall response, with 53% approving the proposal and 43% disapproving it. 80% of Republicans back the idea while 67% of Democrats oppose it.”

More proof, as if any was needed, that the anti-war Left's "Iraq Summer" campaign flopped — as I described in this column on NRO yesterday.

What, nothing to say Linkster?

You just said that 70% of Americans were against the war, but this poll doesn't interest you?

Sounds like Hillary and the 25 anti-American senators that voted "no" on denouncing the MoveOn ad, are in deep shit.

The only "poll" Radiofascist is familiar with is the one between Bush's legs.

yes those numbers show Americans are getting behind the war once again :lmao2:

58-41 it was a mistake in the first place!
27-35 WHAT? Americans trust the DEMS over bush on iraq.
38-59 FAVOR setting a timetable to remove our troops.
35 say the surge is working, 43 say no difference, 21 say its making it worse.
33 say troops not coming home quick enough, 42 say just soon enough, 12 want them to stay away from home longer.
71 say we arent holding the Iraqis to enough responsibilty.

and just to kick you in your conservative funny bone check out this damn dirty liberal cbs poll those evil communist pricks:

http://www.pollingreport.com/iraq.htm

70% dissaprove of bushs handling of Iraq.
57% dissapprove of the dems handling of Iraq. (blue wins!)
53% mistake going in (majority wins, blue wins again!) :taunt:

"From what you know about the U.S. involvement in Iraq, how much longer would you be willing to have large numbers of U.S. troops remain in Iraq: less than a year, one to two years, two to five years or longer than five years?"

Less Than A Year 49%
One to Two Years 23%
Two to Five Years 12% (we really in for the long haul as a nation arent we?)

"From what you have seen or heard about the situation in Iraq, what should the United States do now? Should the U.S. increase the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, keep the same number of U.S. troops in Iraq as there are now, decrease the number of troops in Iraq, or remove all its troops from Iraq?"

increase: 6%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
same number: 21%
decrease: 39%
remove all: 29%
so 68% of the country wants what?

now keep ignoring the facts

Oh, I get it Linkster. When you quote poll numbers, then it's serious stuff, but when I quote poll numbers that you don't like, it's "Playing games".

So facts that side with your beliefs are good and worthy of mention, but any facts that contradict your beliefs you ignore, and are nothing but exercise in game playing to respond to.

I got it. :lmao2:

I said I was done playing games - I could have reposted one of the many polls Ive posted this week - but would it have done any good - of course not - you would believe what you want to - and I would believe what I want to - and we would just go round and round - which to an old man like me is a game and pretty much stupid.

Well, i am not expecting genius from the American public.

they may EVENTUALLY 'get it' but how long can a person wait?

keep in mind 40% STILL FALSELY believe Saddam's Iraq was involved in 911
& 20% believe most of the supposed hijackers were Iraqi?

Face it, to be an American obviously doesn't require being a genius.
I sometimes think there should be some kind of minimal requirements for voting citizenship.

Recent immigrants have to at least pass a test,
I am inclined to think all Americans, including indigenous should at least pass that equal hurdle.
If you can't be bothered, why should a nation bother to make you a citizen.

disrupter - as long as this country has been working to dumb-down its population there is no reason to sit around and wait for the people "come around" - its not gonna happen. As long as they are comfortable in their lives and dont have to worry about sending johnny off to war there will always be a good percentage of people who say - "it doesnt affect me - why should I care".

Thats why it is so important to get the draft started as soon as possible - Ive already started writing my congressmen and telling everyone I run into they need to do the same
