Seems those soldiers scheduled to come home by Petreaus and their wives are kinda pissed off that the general used them as political pawns - and are speaking out - interestingly they confirm that the "early date" of Nov 17th that the General used as proof that we would draw down troops - was scheduled months ago and the wives even already knew - long before the General prepared his report and gave it to congress and the white house - it was a scheduled redeployment

One Marine from the unit, who asked not to be identified for fear or reprisal by his superiors, has a more cynical view. “Seems to me we’re just being used as political pawns by the Pentagon and the White House,” he says. “They’re pleasing the Democrats with this announcement, I guess, but we’ve been here a short time compared to other units. In my personal opinion, the general is playing off our regular deployment schedule and our success here, knowing we’re scheduled to come home anyways. It’s totally political, and I think it’s deceptive.”

Kristy McFarland, 29, who’s married to S/Sgt. John Mundy, 29, a 10-year veteran of the Marines and a member of the 13th MEU, was “dumbfounded” when she heard her husband’s unit named as the first to be sent home as part of the troop reduction. “I was kind of disgusted, to be honest,” says McFarland, a business consultant. “They made it sound so great for this unit. I exchanged an e-mail about this with my husband already, and we both just had a laugh about it. He’s been in the Marines a long time, and he loves his job, but when it comes to the politics of it all, we both just have to roll our eyes and roll with it. It’s just politics

The whole point of what Petraeus said, which seems to be lost here, is that those units would NOT be replaced in a normal rotation, because Iraqi troops would be replacing them. It's not as much that they're even coming home, but that no new US units would be replacing them.

The whole point is that all he is doing is sending them home when they were supposed to - same as those "big drawdowns" next year - kinda funny that they all coincide (all 30,000 the president touted) with normal rotation out times.

More inportantly - why does a president have to send a military man to do his political work - thats the worst part of all of this - a military man should never be put in this position - the president just doesnt have the balls to do it

The point is, they can keep troops there longer, and originally did prepare a request for extensions; and changed their minds, based on progress on the ground. Why is it so dificult for people to grasp that a commander has to decide these things?

The military man has to report to Congress, just like everybody else.

First off - military men do not "normally" report to congress on anything - this is highly unusual and was used as a political ploy - that was obvious and its a disgrace that military men are used that way

Second - they didnt decide to change any extensions - Gates had clearly put out to the military that the extensions would be to 15 months for the Army and normal tours for the marines - and all of the "coming home" times that are being used to tout success are the normal extended rotation times for those units - decided months ago.
As far as the sucess on the ground - I would totally disagree as even the area that they had tried to tout as "now safe" in Anbar (which was an operation that started two years ago - not with the surge) - has just announced that their shieks are disagreeing with the governement and have decided not to support the central party - and have even withdrawn from parliment as of yesterday - but since the goal of the "surge" had nothing to do with progress on the ground - it was to give the government time to reconcile - I would say that it has totally failed
