From the Rasmussen Reports Poll, September 11-12.

Do you favor or oppose the recommendation made by General David Petraeus to withdraw 30,000 soldiers from Iraq but leave 130,000 troops in place at least through the summer?

43% Support Petraeus Recommendation
38% Oppose
19% Not Sure

Also,

37% have a favorable opinion of Petraeus
18% have an unfavorable view of Petraeus
45% have no opinion of the General at this time

71% say that it is somewhat or very likely that “a large number of U.S. soldiers will remain in Iraq five years from today.”

Men favor the Petraeus approach by a 49% to 39% margin.

Women are evenly divided.

Those with higher incomes are generally more supportive of the plan than those with lower incomes.

65% of Americans followed news of the Petraeus testimony at least somewhat closely this week.

Good news.

These 1,000 pollsters apparently don't agree with Rasmussen's 1,000 pollsters.

In contrast to the outlook voiced by Petraeus and Crocker, only 36 percent of 1,000 adults taking part in a new Associated Press-Ipsos poll said the troop increase has helped stabilize Iraq, 4 percent more than a poll taken in February at the start of the troop surge in Iraq.

Fifty-nine percent said they believe history will judge the Iraq war as a failure, including 28 percent who felt it would be rated a complete failure.

And 57 percent said "yes" when asked if it was a mistake for the U.S. to go to war in Iraq, about the same figure as a poll in April.
