He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue
He knows every song of love that ever has been sung
Good intentions can be evil
Both hands can be full of grease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.
- Bob Dylan, "Man of Peace"
After my first Christmas mass, I felt strange for days. As hard as I tried, I couldn't put my finger on why.
A week later, it dawned on me -- I felt peaceful. Aha! No wonder I was stumped!
I'm intimately familiar with anger and sadness and frustration -- intermixed with those fleeting moments of joy. But peace? That's not a state hardwired into my Berkeley edge.
I liked the feeling though...a lot. I was breathing deeper and sleeping better. After it dissolved in another week or so, I wanted more of that peaceful, easy feeling.
Trying to ignore the doleful expression of my secular mate, I headed out to a few more lovely services -- at a synagogue, a Lutheran church, and, my personal favorite, Assemblies of God (as a perk, Sarah Palin's church of choice).
While perusing the Yellow Pages, I eyed another contender -- a church in a nearby town that touted superb music and a dynamic congregation.
When I called to find out more, I was pleased that the minister himself answered the phone. When I asked him to describe his church, he answered rather sternly, "We do God's work through social justice."
Taken aback, I said, "I'm looking for a church that focuses on God, not politics."
He countered vociferously, "We get to God through social justice!"
"That's a matter of dispute," I responded. "Thank you for your time." Click.
When I got off the phone, I was shaken up -- literally. My entire body was shaking.
It was partly the creepiness of a minister sounding so possessed. But more than this: I got a bird's-eye view of what Glenn Beck has been talking about for weeks.
Beck has revealed that churches are increasingly becoming socialist breeding grounds. It's not just the Rev. Wright who preached revolution. The president's new Palm Pilot minister, Jim Wallis, trumpets getting to heaven through redistribution.
It's bad enough that the radicals want our children, our newspapers, our money, and our health care. But hijacking God?
The Left tried first to separate people from God. They banished Him from schools and government; they ridiculed and mocked believers.
Their efforts having failed miserably (about 80% of all Americans still identity as Christian), so they turn to plan B: Contaminate the Word of God.
The Left has had many incarnations. The latest is masquerading as holy men, with the holiest, of course, being Obama.
At least the '60s radicals were transparent about their true colors. The Weathermen, the Symbionese Liberation Army, and the Black Panthers never held themselves out as Messiahs. They were right in your face with their terrorism, murders, and rapes.
Obama role model Saul Alinsky announced to the whole world which master the Left serves. Here's his dedication in Rules for Radicals:
Lest we forget at least an over-the shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical ... the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom -- Lucifer.
More insidious is the new crop of leftists. Wearing the cloak of respectability, they trick the masses through flowery words about hope and change.
But those of us who recognize Light also know the chill of darkness. The Left is nocturnal. Its followers live and breathe in the dark.
To me, God is about surrender, not power; humility, not humiliation.
A life of the spirit means relinquishing control to God. Humans can't second-guess divine wisdom.
The Left views hardship as unfair and launches crusades for social justice. But there's another way to regard suffering -- as holy. Through pain, we solidify our relationship to our Creator.
I think that the progressives know, deep inside, in places they keep well-hidden, that their souls are damaged.
Their movement is not really about redistribution, or social justice, or green power. It's about extinguishing the Light that exposes their brokenness.
And that's why the Left targets the bright-eyed people -- the children and the pious. In them, the Light is luminous.
I've seen that Light in spades at some of those religious services. On Easter, in a crime-ravaged area, I sat with over a thousand people of every race and creed.
I saw sights that astonished me, like a distraught white woman being cradled by a black woman adorned in brilliant African garb. Or several men of varying races and ages embracing each other, praying together.
I saw a laying-on of hands among people of every possible color, who were tending to each other, caring for each other. I'd never before seen the power of God in all its vibrancy.
A better world can exist -- I know because I've witnessed it. Unity is possible, but only with God as the middleman.
But the religious Left don't want to minister to people with love and kindness. Instead, they're trying to recreate Jesus in their own image.
But, try as they might, they can't bulldoze their way into heaven. By even making the effort, they serve another master entirely.
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
You're gonna have to serve somebody.
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.
- Bob Dylan, "Gotta Serve Somebody"
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge him,
And he will make your paths straight.
(Proverbs 3:5-6)

I liked this line......
"The Left tried first to separate people from God. They banished Him from schools and government; they ridiculed and mocked believers.
Their efforts having failed miserably (about 80% of all Americans still identity as Christian), so they turn to plan B: Contaminate the Word of God."
The left has an alternative religion. They pervert and distort. They put themselves in the place of God to determine who gets what and who lives or dies. They take a sacred rite like marriage and pervert it. Their alternative universe is entirely made up of fakery and phoniness because they live in darkness. There are wolves among the sheep. We know who and what you are.

What you've just displayed here is one of the reasons we keep religion and government separated.
"Parallel play" between Church and State does no harm-but-when you entwine them, great mischief frequently results : something the Founding Fathers were well aware of.

The founding fathers didn't keep religion separate from government. They are the ones who initiated prayer before every session of congress.
There is no separation of religion from government in the USA.

I know that and you know that, but the left will never accept the truth. All the separation clause said, was that the federal government could not make a law embracing a national religion, nor could they make a law forbidding any one religion. Hell, when the constitution became our founding document, 9 of the 13 states had a state religion, which was perfectly within their right to have.

I think it would be almost impossible to be a good leftist if you had a truthful knowledge of American history. If you're a good leftist then you have to ignore or deny the truth of American history and it's founding.

Sounds like another pompous ass who thinks that suffering is fine as long as its not him suffering.
This is just one more example of the false choices that right wingers like to create.
If you are not for a totally unregulated free market then your a marxist. If you want to insure that the richest nation on the earth takes care of its most needy then you are a socialist.
Well fuck your right wing bullshit lies and false choices.
We can have a freemarket with regulations to protect the nation and its economy from greedy bankers and wallstreet thieves without being marxists.
We can have a safety net for the young and elderly without being Marxist.
Jesus wasn't a Marxist but he was a humanitarian and all the right wing lies to the contrary are just that lies.

Those regulations do not protect society from people that lie, scheme, and cheat their way to free leaving at a substansial cost to all of us. People that falsify their incomes and their actual have cost this country and heavily and the those greedy bankers you hate so much. Greedy bankers are non existent if we could somehow stop the idiots above from making initial contact with them.

Those regulations would keep wall street from playing fast and easy with the nations economy. It is already illegal to falsify incomes, that was not what causes national economic collapses.

We WERE talking about the same Jesus Christ, were we not ?
The one who drove the money changers out of the Temple, and who made unkind remarks about people who valued wealth over everything ? The one who said we should minister to the least of our brethren ?
I understand the New Testament that had all those "socialistic" or "soft-on-socialism" messages has been revised lately; that there is now a "J. Christ of biblical fame", who wants us to get wealthy ASAP,and to kick those "Poor you have with you always" slackers under the ox cart (there being no buslines running in that era.)
Let's hear it for the new "Kick-Ass-Jesus" !

Separation is easy to associate with the Const. - here's the answer from the framers:
To messers Nehemiah Dodge, Ephraim Robbins, & Stephen S. Nelson a committee of the Danbury Baptist association in the state of Connecticut.
Gentlemen
The affectionate sentiments of esteem & approbation which you are so good as to express towards me, on behalf of the Danbury Baptist association, give me the highest satisfaction. my duties dictate a faithful & zealous pursuit of the interests of my constituents, and in proportion as they are persuaded of my fidelity to those duties, the discharge of them becomes more & more pleasing.
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man & his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. [Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion, and the Executive authorised only to execute their acts, I have refrained from presenting even occasional performances of devotion presented indeed legally where an Executive is the legal head of a national church, but subject here, as religious exercises only to the voluntary regulations and discipline of each respective sect.] Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.
I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection and blessing of the common Father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves and your religious association, assurances of my high respect & esteem.

As far as the Marxist theory - there is quite the Liberation movement thats been going on since the 1950s, who sure think so - and preach so - and to the point that now the Catholic church has even made a good part of it official doctrine under the "preferential option for the poor"
Of course the whole fallacy with this post is that very few people that write of Marxism understand the class struggle or distribution theories very well - including the author of the thread starter. If this were 60 years ago, with the infancy of the Marxism (or even the Socialist strain that so many these days also do not understand as a separate theology) connections being theorized, a little misunderstanding could be expected.
In this day and age, if you do not understand Marxism (or socialism if you use that widely used "derrogatory" phrase) then you really should not be posting using it to deride a specific group in the US, as you only show your stupidity and lack of ability to grasp very basic civic or government studies from a Junior High School curriculum.

Liberation theology.................
Gee, those ppl should of been happy.. Those rich landowners gave them work & almost enough to feed their families........ Ungrateful pigs....
While some aspects of MarXism has some isolated resemblances, their premise is rooted far more in darwinism than Christianity IMHO............
While Christianity teaches of an "enlighten man" darwinism places man on order w/ the beast & thus deserving, perhaps, to be treated as such.........
Now from my understanding of that "liberation theology" that they are not embracing MarXism but rather that we, ppl, deserve better than to be subjected & forced to perform as mere beasts in the service of the rich & powerful- who in most of those cases like South American are the big land owners, their military henchmen & paid politicians............
Gee why would anyone want to rebel against a nice hand to mouth existence???:lmao2:

Leave to a liberal to start the name calling when they have run out of things to say. Until you get out of your cubicle the only world you will see is the scraps Nancy throws you from her table.
As many have said here it is a waste of time to debate with you because of your socialistic world that you choose to live in. You are the perfect example of the financial troubles California is seeing and will continue to see until either they wake up politically or the generation of socialist believers dies off.

My knowledge on marxism is basic hence the reason I avoided this thread im 15 so I think I can claim some level of ignorance...Marxism is the belief that workers should own the means of production instead of being employed by the owner as they believe that the workers are being exploited.
I have spent the last year or so reading up on anarcho capitalism and that is just on on the many schools of thought on anarchy so I only know that much from talking with Marxists... Very limited I know but I think I have the general idea.

Sounds like a good start - if you want to look into the real roots of Marxism start a little further back with the British Revolution in the 1600s and work your way up into the early 1800s with Engels and Marx - it was quite a brilliant evolution of Workers Rights and the starting of the concepts of Democracy for the British after they saw the United States form their Union based on a Democratic Republic at the end of the 1700s.
Few Americans know of the Marxist underpinnings of the United States and its founding, so be ready to receive quite a bit of abusive trash thrown your way if you happen to mention any of it :)

Why is that they always seem to miss the fact the Jesus always talked about individuals caring for each other???
I wish, just once, someone would cite a NT verse where Jesus berated the Roman Governor for not doing enough for the poor, or told his disciples to petition or organize a demonstration to get said Governor to provide more assistance to the needy.
Even when He advocated sharing, (If a man asks for your shirt, give him your cloak also) it was on a personal level. He never said take you neighbor's shirt if he has two and give it away. And He never advocated the governor taking people's wealth and spreading it around.

I posted this a while back, but it got very little response. It's a PBS documentary called "Heaven on Earth: The rise and fall of socialism". It goes back to the early 1800's before Karl Marx and looks at the different experiments over the last 150-200 years with socialist societies throughout the world.
If you want to know what Marxism really is, and how it plays out when it's imposed on a society, then this is the documentary for you.

Well, I happen to agree with the poster you were responding too. There are quite a few references in the Bible instructing people to be charitable. Most conservatives are.
But I have NEVER seen anywhere in the Bible where God or his son instructed governments to "spread the wealth" so to say. And to say that the omission of this is an endorsement for government run entitlements seems to be, to put it nicely, a bit of a stretch.

"Money is the root of all evil". I hear that a lot. The scripture it is from actually says ....."The LOVE of money is the root of all evil".
You don't have to be wealthy to love money. The reason lots of people are poor is from the love of money.
It's all about attitude. Who do you put your trust in? Your money or you God? If you're a liberal you put your trust in money, someone elses. That's Love of money. That's why liberals are anti-Christian and are big poopy pants.

If you really want to help the poor then giving to churches and city missions will give you the biggest bang for your buck.
Sure but why do one & exclude the latter??
As I have stated here hundreds of times...... I want my tax money to go towards helping Americans not killing foreigners & wallstreet bonuses......
Simple enough...........

Oh, I see.
I think the devil gets blamed for half of what happens while God gets blamed for the other half. The problem is most people don't know who is responsible for which half.

Not sure what you mean but I think most ppl feel if it suites them, it is from God, if it don't then.. Well you know.......

That's why it's a good idea to know the scriptures and what they mean. When you start hearing voices then you'll have an idea who it might be....yourself, God or the devil.

I think hearing voices is a different issue.

As I said, you can interpret it as best suites you.............
So what is the will of God here?? As determined by you?? That ppl should suffer while their taxes go to wallstreet bonuses??
You ASSUME that I am in favor of MY tax dollars going to Wall Street bonuses. I believe I was one that stated to LET THEM FAIL!! I am one that believes that the job of government is to provide for defense (military, police, fire, etc), maintain our justice system, and maintain the infrastructure of the country. That is all laid out in the Constitution. To give money collected from the citizens to give to ANY group of citizens is unconstitutional and immoral.
IMHO it is real simple.......... God, guVment, who ever.............
I pay taxes........ Lots of them.......... I want my money to go towards helping my fellow citizens.. If that makes me a commie then so be it..
As do I. However, by letting the government do it, you are trusting a group of people that are not qualified to push a broom at most places, with determining WHO gets your hard earned tax dollars and how much. I donate to my church and the Salvation Army. In doing so, I specify HOW my hard earned money is to be spent and by whom. That way I know that those dollars aren’t going to some pervert sticking a crucifix in a cup of urine and calling it art.
I prefer my money to go to schools, roads & care for our ppl, not foreign aid or military or wallstreet..............
Then so be it. But by letting the government handle it, it IS going to Wall Street and many other places that you happen to disagree with. So the question is, why to continue to insist that to government continues this practice?

Well I think overall we are on the same page.........
I was not really for the bailouts but as I have stocks I was, admittedly ambivalent...
I believe we would both prefer to have less guVment involvement & more say in where our money is spent but that is not the case...
They don't ask us, they take it & do as they wish w/ it... Since they are going to take it anyway it is my hope to get a return on that money=healthcare, schools roads etc........
Presently, @ least IMO that money is being squandered on foreign adventures & wasted military projects to fight the last war....
Since we are spending almost as much as everyone put together on the military I think that huge pie won't miss a slice or two.......
While some believe in the tuff shit theory, I do not... Ppl in all the rest of the civilized countries have a portion of their tax dollars go towards their care.......... Personally I do not see that as a crime...

I think you are right, that we pretty much agree on most of this. I would however like to say that your statement

I disagree with. I think the whole point is that we need to STOP them from taking it. The best way to do this is to demand that they cut their spending. While I don't have a problem with paying taxes for those things that I listed, I do take exception to the ever increasing spending by both the D's and the R's. As I stated, we are elected idiots to take money from us and spend it to get themselves re-elected. We should throw them ALL out of office and start over.
