Hmm - Colorado is having some fun:
A couple wrote a letter to the editor on a newspapers website - and included links to the FEC showing where a congressman had accepted donations from casino gaming industry when he ran on a family values and fiscal responsibility - and they are conservative christians calling it a disgrace - which is their right and freedom of speech

The response from Rep Lamborn came in the form of two voice mails on their home phone which are scary:

FIRST MESSAGE: "Hello, this is Doug Lamborn calling for either Jonathan or Anna. Something very serious has happened. There was a letter to the editor that you both put in your names to the editor of the Woodmen Edition and there is something that is blatantly false in that letter.

"I would like to get together with you and show this to you and appeal to you as a brother and sister in Christ. You didn't give me that opportunity but I am happy to overlook that and deal with you on that level because I think that is the right thing to do and show you where you made a blatant, wrong statement.

"Now there are consequences to this kind of thing, but I would like to work with you in a way that is best for everyone here concerned. So please call me at your earliest convenience. It is now 2:40 (p.m.) on Saturday afternoon.

SECOND MESSAGE: "Hello, this is Doug Lamborn again, I'm finishing up my message from a moment ago. I got cut off. It is critical that you get back to me as soon as possible on this because I'll be going back to Washington here in a few days and I have to make sure that this is resolved one way or another. And like I said I'd rather resolve this on a Scriptural level but if you are unwilling to do that I will be forced to take other steps, which I would rather not have to do. So please call me. This is essential. Call me by tonight, Saturday night and we can get together sometime Sunday afternoon."

Awwww, that's so sweet.

He wants to deal with it on a scriptural level.

Just so there won't be consequences.

What a guy!

If the couple cannot prove it in a court, they could be charged with libel and slander. Until it's proven in court, politicians have learned to disavow everything and attack those persecuting them.

Why is this even a discussion? Thought these were political boards, are you honestly telling me you don't understand the concepts of politics today? :hi:

Fortunately they cannot be hit with slander because in their letter they provide links to the FECs list of contributions made to the politician which showed their assertions to be correct. The politicians' use of personal threats to counteract their "outing" of his hypocrisy is what is at question and will turn into a legal issue, which will probably cause him to resign as he has broken the law.(If the couple presses charges)

And this is a political discussion - showing the corruption of politicians is definitely politics.

Sure they can. All he has to do is file suit against them for it. Not saying he could win, but he can make a case out of it.

Cool. I hope he files a lawsuit.

That'll make it all nice and public.

Then he can explain.

I believe they have announced that they are pressing criminal charges against him so it might be a little late for him to try the slander avenue - especially now that all of the Colorado newspapers have published his entire contributors lists for the public to see which backs up that couples claims

You can file suit for anything, founded or not. Look at the judge that tried to run the immigrant couple out of business for allegedly ruining his pants.
