WASHINGTON - In a reversal of a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling, President Barack Obama is allowing oil drilling off Virginia's shorelines and considering it for a large chunk of the Atlantic seaboard. At the same time, he's rejecting some new drilling sites that had been planned in Alaska.
Obama's plan offers few concessions to environmentalists, who have been strident in their opposition to more oil platforms off the nation's shores. Hinted at for months, the plan modifies a ban that for more than 20 years has limited drilling along coastal areas other than the Gulf of Mexico.
Obama was set to announce the new drilling policy Wednesday at Andrews air base in Maryland.

Now that's a step in the right direction. Good job Mr. President. He needs loosen up restrictions everywhere though, but for now, I'll take this and be happy.
As for the environmentalists, all I can say is "fuck them". People come first.
I hope he does, but this report seems to indicate that things are a little more vague.

The plan could pave the way for a significant new domestic source of energy, helping to reduce U.S. dependence on oil imports and boost supplies of natural gas used to displace coal in power plants as the country works to reduce emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases.
Last month, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said he wanted to release the updated drilling plan by the end of March.
Two industry sources said on Monday President Barack Obama was expected to give a speech about energy security on Wednesday, which could include his views on expansion of offshore drilling.
The Interior Department and White House declined comment on Monday on whether Obama would speak to the issue in a speech slated for mid-morning on Wednesday at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.
The administration has been weighing the pros and cons of offshore drilling since it took office and put the brakes on a Bush-era proposal that called for drilling along the East Coast and off the coast of California.
For more than 20 years, drilling was banned in most offshore areas of the United States outside the Gulf of Mexico because of concerns spills could harm the environment.
Congress allowed the prohibition to expire in 2008 and former President George W. Bush lifted a drilling moratorium that year.
Environmental groups and some lawmakers continue to raise concerns about the impact increased drilling would have on coastal areas.
Those "could" and "expected" words are pretty vague.
And, we have this,

snips,
including the cancellation of planned lease sales in Alaska and potentially years-long waits before new drilling along the East Coast.
Under revised Interior plan, four pending lease sales in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas north of Alaska would be canceled to allow scientific studies and environmental research before any drilling decisions.
What I see is him proposing (not a guarantee) some new leases, while eliminating some existing ones.
It looks like it may be smoke and mirrors, and the MSNBC headline (and article) doesn't tell the whole story.

They did in the general vicinity- further off shore but north & south there are lots of them visible from shore..........
They had a real bad spill there back in the late 60's.......

I don't care what they do as long as it makes the insurance companies have to start caring more about it's patients than it's profits.
What does that have to do with the topic of this thread?
