No they didn't join the party of Lincoln. The party of Lincoln freed the slaves. It was the dems who wouldn't let blacks vote in the south, not republicans. Martin Luther King's father was a Republican and as far as we know King was never a registered Democrat. Condi Rice is also a republican because her parents were not allowed to register as democrats.
