I'm sure tripling transportation costs will really help our economy.

Fuel Taxes Must Rise, Harvard Researchers Say
By SINDYA N. BHANOO

To meet the Obama administration’s targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, some researchers say, Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon.

To reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector 14 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, the cost of driving must simply increase, according to a forthcoming report by researchers at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

The 14 percent target was set in the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget for fiscal 2010.

In their study, the researchers devised several combinations of steps that United States policymakers might take in trying to address the heat-trapping emissions by the nation’s transportation sector, which consumes 70 percent of the oil used in the United States.

Most of their models assumed an economy-wide carbon dioxide tax starting at $30 a ton in 2010 and escalating to $60 a ton in 2030. In some cases researchers also factored in tax credits for electric and hybrid vehicles, taxes on fuel or both.

In the modeling, it turned out that issuing tax credits could backfire, while taxes on fuel proved beneficial.

“Tax credits don’t address how much people use their cars,” said Ross Morrow, one of the report’s authors. “In reverse, they can make people drive more.”

Dr. Morrow, formerly a fellow at the Belfer Center, is a professor of mechanical engineering and economics at Iowa State University

Researchers said that vehicle miles traveled will increase by more than 30 percent between 2010 and 2030 unless policymakers increase fuel taxes.

these dumbasses want to destroy the economy permanently. without vehicle travel family vacations are over, boating is over, along with camping, cycling, hunting. Those that had any doubt where liberals want to take us can learn from these kind of reports.

I'm just thinking of the trucking industry; and how all goods, no matter where or what they are, have to be transported to their point of sale. Whether it's food, merchandise, or anything else. So the cost of everything will go up, because of the added cost of transportation.

Then there's UPS, FedEx and the USPS. Along with busses, gas for construction equipment, etc. Every sector using gas will have to pass on the added costs.

Many of these environmentalist live off their family fortune or through donations to their organization so they could care less about people that actually work for a living.

Notice the lack of lefties here to defend this proposal. Even the most liberal of the bunch will have a hard time defending this stupid move.

Well DUH thanks captain obvious because we all know that rising gas prices dooms everything else...cant pay for gas so you cant go anywhere, cant go anywhere so you cant work.....no work means no money to buy anything...etc. No sane person in their right mind would justify this at all...personally I dont buy it or see it happening anyways.

Seems to me to be just a bunch of econimists "Theories" on how things would be paid. Even Obama if he has just a quarter of a sliver of a brain wont go for it!

This is good because as we all know goods and services are transported via beaming/teleporting and people only drive for recreation and not to go to work or anything like that or pick up their children from school/practice. I'm sure that's also why goods and services are so efficient and cheap in other countries so lets follow what they're doing.

What the hell, why not just increase it to $5,000 a gallon. That way no individual drives. I'm sure plumbers won't mind lugging all their tools while taking 3 bus transfers to get to their clients.

What kind of fucking planet do these douchebags live? Lets destroy the economy for their religion.

We need two thread for this?

You purposely mislead, based on a study done by people that have nothing to do w/policy?

Notice your words in red...some, and may.

That's some pretty damning stuff you have there.

But these are Harvard people. Elites. They know what's best for the rest of us. Of course Obama will do it.

I hate people forcing their beliefs on me religious or otherwise. I find it funny so many think it is OK to legislate their beliefs on others if they are non religious, but if the basis of that belief is religious, oh well we can't legislate that. Most people want to legislate their view of morality on everyone, whether it is ending abortion or feeding the homeless, most want to use the police power of government to make everyone live by their moral view. Very few people support freedom.

And I thought Education was supposed to be our most important public crusade. I guess not, shows what the public knows.

Yes..that's exactly what I said in the first thread...which is why this won't happen.

Non issue. There are plenty of studies, by plenty of people that have nothing to do with policymaking

Look around, what doesn't get delivered that doesn't include the cost of fuel? The desk and the chair you are sitting in right now was delivered by a truck which uses gas. The very computer you are typing on right now was delivered by a truck. Your phone. Your lunch. Your wireless devices. Your clothes. Your shoes. Everything! Artificially and arbitrarily raise fuel costs? Go fuck yourselves!
