Ive been pondering this for a while, since it has been the "pet peeve du jour" amongst Conservatives on the two boards I post on..Socialism is fightin' words to a Republican..They'll call you a Commie, a Marxist, a Socialist, and a variety of other names that I cant think of right now..
I dont believe you can have a society of all walks of life without social prorgams, because people are fallable, and our own human nature is our worst enemy..In society there are the "haves", and the "have nots"..and without social prorgams, I believe there would be more crime..The desperation of poverty would make thieves of honest men and women..not to mention what it woud make of the criminal and the dishonest, the kind that dont have to be desperate to shoot you over $50.00
Without social prorgams, the sick would perish, and the elderly wouldnt become elderly unless they were fortunate enough to invest wisely in their future..their retirement..You can throw out figues all day long about investing in retirement, but without a such a thing as Social Security, it looks good on paper, and the math even adds up..But reality and math are not somehow connected..Life is full of hidden agendas, and change is inevitable..I found out about that when I, a self-employed commercial fisherman was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease at age 51..My investment was in my boat, and because things "inevitably changed" over the years, my huge investment, because of govt over regulation of the fisheies, and the permenant moratoriums on licenses, and permits, my investment became an asset only to me..I am not looking for sympathy here..that is not my motive for writing this..My motive for writing this is to demonstrate that not everything is in black and white, and life at best is a huge grey area, cuz ya see..I wasnt supposed to get Parkinsons Disease..It wasnt part of my grand plan..not my version of life as I know it..That changed everything!!..And I never dreamed the day would come, that the govt would regulate the fishing business into near extiction..I never thought I would live to see $5.00 per gallon deisel fuel..All of a sudden, at age 53, I find myself with Parkinsons, a 47' boat that my life savings are invested in, that nobody wants, because fuel is too expensive, the fisheries are regulated to death, and if you dont already have a license, you cant get one anyway..I cant work full time anymore, because I am too sick and I am forced into a position where I have to sell the boat, because it is costing me too much money just owning it..It costs me $2000 for dock space for 6 months..I cant use it anymore, but I still have to maintain it, so I can sell it..I have to drive 24 miles 'round trip everyday, to check it, make sure the batteries are charged, the bilge pumps are working, and during stormy weather, I am at the boatyard more than I am at home, whether I want to be or not..Sick or not sick..Windy summer day, or freezing ass cold winter night..Finally, I sell the boat for a song after lowering the askng price 3 times, just to get the monkey off my back..Out of the settlement there are outstanding bills to pay, either to the boatyard, or credit card bills I racked up for misc expenses..I try to be grateful for what I got, and that it's finally over..Now I can go about the business of retirement, and dealing with my disabilty in peace I hope..But as I mentioned, "in life change is inevtable"..Two winters ago, gas was $4.00 a gallon, and home heating oil was higher..I was forced to swallow my pride and apply for fuel assistance, I didnt get enough assistance for 100 gals of oil, so I had to call "Joe for oil" to get another handout..Then the economy crashed, and the only thing that changed for me was everything got cheaper, my disability check went further..The "have nots" like myself were prospering, while the "haves" were losing their jobs, going bankrupt, and gettng forecolsed on their homes..That wasnt suposed to happen to them either Im sure..Ask anyone of them, I am sure they will agree
So much for my story..Now by virtue of my not-so-unique set of circumstances, I have figured out how to side step socialism entirely, in its most pristine existance.....
What it Really Means to Be Amish
by: Joy Schrock – President-Berlin Natural Bakery
http://media.nextautos.com/images/Lancaster-Amish-buggy.jpg
In a world of technological advances, fast paced hectic lives, economic uncertainty and heated political issues…live a group of people that are not affected and in many cases are not even aware of the chaos that surrounds them.
These people live in a community that puts forth great effort not to “conform to the world”. Throughout most of our lives, the thought of living this way is inconceivable to us. However today, many of us find ourselves reevaluating our lives and embracing some of the fundamental values and life styles of the Amish.
The Amish live plain and simple lives. They do not worry about things like the stock market, nationalized health care, welfare, medicare, social security or retirement. They basically operate their own government, church and community…and it works, actually it works quite well. Perhaps there are a few lessons all of us can learn from the Amish. Let’s take a look at who they are.

Interesting post.
Somehow, the Amish are able to make things work by focusing on community, not government.
Perhaps with a little less government involvement, you might be better off. You can't undo what happened in your past though.

They make most of them. Everybody works long hours in the community as well. Men, Women, and children all have specific task they are expected to perform. While each family unit has some money they mainly operate out of a single community account. You will not see a beard on a man unless he is married or widowed. They are truly the hardest working people I have ever seen putting in 12-15 hours every day except Sunday.

Mennonites will drive black trucks and cars instead of the horse and carriages. Some of the Amish here pull trailers with tractors but most still use the carriages.

Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but a thousand words of nothing is still nothing.

Anybody can photoshop a picture, but intelligent thought and wordsmithing is much more valuable and thought provoking.
Give me a challenge that bends my mind, not a cute picture that makes me chuckle.

And about those horses. If you get a chance, next time you see one give him a good look. For a people who profess humility they have mighty haugty horses pulling those carriages. I mean they are fine, beautiful horses, Tennessee Walkers they look like. Not the breed of horse a humble people would use.
