Being a cat person I'm kinda bummed.
In the war of dogs vs. cats, clear winner: dogs

LOS ANGELES — Cats. Dogs. Those can be fighting words in some circles.
Cats are "nasty, stinking creatures," says Mark David of Warrensburg, Mo. And dogs? They're noisy, disruptive and "lick you and themselves," counters Sanford Reikes of Louisville, Ky.
Clearly, there are dog people and there are cat people. But it's not much of a contest: 74 percent of people like dogs a lot, and only 41 percent like cats a lot.
Cats win the dislike vote handily, according to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll. Fifteen percent of the adults questioned said they disliked cats a lot while the number who said they disliked dogs a lot was just 2 percent.
Joseph Moreus, 61, of Westminster, Calif., understands why dogs come out on top.
"They have more personality. They are loyal," he said. "Cats are all about cats but dogs are interested in pleasing their owners. Cats don't care if they please you or not."
And cats can be destructive, said Joy Rasch, 70, of Kennewick, Wash., who gets mad at the neighborhood cats who kill robins, quail and squirrels in her back yard. Male cats will spray their territory or get in the wood pile at 3 a.m. and "screech like bad brakes on a car," she added.
Of course, cat lovers, if smaller in numbers, are equal in passion.
"Cats are 1,000 times smarter than dogs," said Bonnie Hanson, 77, of Sioux Falls, S.D. She and her late husband had a black Siamese cat, Kitty, that she said "always wanted to comfort people, anybody who was ill or unhappy."
"My husband would have chest pains and wouldn't tell me. But Kitty would come and look at me and I'd know. We called him our psychic Siamese," she said. "Every cat I ever had was a help and a comfort."
About 59 percent of American households own pets, according to the poll. About 74 percent of pet owners polled said they had dogs, and 47 percent said they had cats.
Those most likely to dislike cats were blacks, Hispanics and married men. Men were a bit more likely than women to say they disliked cats.
Dog people are more adamant about their preference than cat people, the poll found. Of those who owned only a dog, 34 percent said they disliked cats; of those who owned only a cat, only 5 percent disliked dogs.
David, 28, who runs a landscaping company in Warrensburg, dislikes cats but he says he owes his life to a dog. Two years ago, his 5-year-old black lab Zena was with him when a tractor rolled onto his leg, leaving him pinned and bleeding. Zena went to get his wife.
"She wasn't a Lassie by any means, but she was smart enough to go for help," David said.
Still, all this sniping doesn't mean there is no harmony in the country. Sixty percent of all adults said they liked both dogs AND cats.
Cats are independent so give you a little more freedom but dogs are better companions, said Janet Hardy, 69, of Abingdon, Md., who grew up with both.
David Kyser, 73, has also had both — and can tick off their relative merits.
"Cats take care of themselves.
They are very clean.
Dogs are not so clean and they need some activity. They are good if you have a house full of children," said Kyser, of Austin, Texas. "Cats just kind of sit around being cats."
And some, of course, don't want either species for a friend.
"I have a fear of dogs and I don't like cats," said Willie Thigpen, 60, of Greenwood, S.C. He and his wife raised three children, but they never had a pet.
"And now I don't want to take care of nothing except me," he said.
The AP-Petside.com poll was conducted Oct. 1-5, 2009, by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media. It involved telephone interviews on landline and cell phones with 1,967 adults nationwide, including 1,166 pet owners and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points for all adults.
The margin of sampling error is higher and varies for results based on sub-samples.

Most of my adult life I had cats because you can leave the house for a week and they would be ok if they had food.
I now take in whatever, dog or cat that comes to my door needing help and I have 4 dogs and 1 3/4 cats. One cat only has three legs but had such a good personality I didn't want to put him to sleep just for that.
The Dog Whisperer is helping alot with controlling the dogs but it is a pack and I am their leader with no arguments. The oldest one is a female the size of a huge German Shepard but she doesn't take a step unless I say it is OK.
Dogs last longer than cats. The cats tend to contract more diseases than the dogs but the cats require less room and care.
I would think that somebody that hates cats have never had one intheor house.
It is a fact that petting a cat at the end of a hard day lowers the blood pressure and calms you down. Cats have their uses.
Which do you like Frank?
While most people think that both cats and dogs reach adult size in 1 year, it is actually a little less for cats.
Cats can be butchered at about 10 months, but it really does take a dog a full year to reach adult butchering age. Gestation periods are almost identical at about 63 days.
In general, cats usually have larger litters, which is better for the rancher.
Young cats will gain about 1 pound for every 2 pounds of food eaten, but dogs require about 3 pounds of food to gain 1 pound in body weight. This makes raising cats for meat a better value over dogs.
Additionally, the yields of meat as a percentage of body weight is better for cats. Cats typically dress out at 75%, while dogs generally dress out at about 65%. This varies more in dogs than in cats, based upon the breed of the dog. The dog bone density is also higher than cat, so even the dressed out weight favors cats. When removing the weight of the bones, there is more meat per pound on a cat.
The meat itself is pretty similar, but then it's really the spices and cooking method that determine the overall flavor and tenderness of the meat.
The one advantage dogs have is that since they are larger, it takes fewer dogs to fill your freezer. If you have an adversity to butchering and cleaning the livestock it takes less time to clean one dog than it does to clean a dozen cats.
Me personally, I have the time, so I prefer cats based upon the cost per pound to raise them and the meat yield I get.

I am definitely with you on that one Mason .
My wife and I work at the the same company so naturally we carpool.
Our cat Oliver is always waiting at the door when he hears us unlock the door and it actually is a huge stress reliever for us to hold him , pet him and listen to his relaxing purring.

I don't see why people say cats are apathetic to their owners.
Every cat I have ever had has always been happy to see me when I come home, and it is not because they were waiting for food as their bowl is always full, not like a dog but I like the lower energy level.
The 3 legged cat I have now has to live in the bathroom because he is paralyzed from just in front of his tail so he doesn't feel when he has to use the bathroom so he just does it. If I gave him a litter box he would sleep in it. He has started moving his tail more so maybe he is getting a bit better. The puppy I found uses his tail as a chew toy because he can't feel it. I am afraid it will get infected so I have to keep them apart.
The other cat I have followed my friend to my house and won't leave. She is an orange cat and I have a soft spot for orange cats. She has found her place in my house. The dogs don't bother her but the 3 legged cat wants to tear her apart.
I still think that the people that hate cats never had one.
My whole family hated cats until we found one back in 1970 and then everybody loved them. I am talking about parents and grandparents.
After that cat, they say they hated cats except ours. Then when I had two others they still hated cats but fought over which one of mine was better.
I just don't get hate for cats when they stay out of the way generally speaking.
I am glad your cat is helping your health. That will be less trips to the doctor.

All cats have different personalities, but overall, I think cats are more apathetic to their owners in comparison to dogs. I don't hate cats at all, I just prefer dogs because they seem more affectionate and loyal. I am a dog person but like both dogs and cats.

I have a dog and a cat....the cat was a stray we took in....She doesnt' like going outside....(can't imagine why, since she had part of an ear bit off by something). Her name is Samatha, Sam, for short, and she is adorable.....and a smokey grey color and such a sweet baby....She sits on my lap while I'm on the 'puter or watching the tube....She crawls into bed with me and cuddles....She only meows when she wants to be fed or wants some attention. Once she gets both, she is good to go for hours....
My dog, Chopper, is a bulldog. I have to let him out, three to four times a day, because he doesn't know how to reach up and open the door himself. I have to feed him and give him water.... He just doesn't use a litter box, so that makes it more time consuming for me.... And he just isn't into cuddling....

My wife and i have 2 cats, one we adopted and one that she had picked up as a stray that was near death and she nursed back to health. They are both like children to us and we can not imagine life without them.
She is also a dog lover and once we get a house with a big enough back yard she wants to get a couple rottweillers, those are her favorites, she actually wants to breed them.

There are enough homeless animals without more backyard breeders bringing more puppies into the world. It takes a lot of time and money to breed dogs properly and experienced breeders only do it to preserve the very best in the breed, not for money or a novelty. This means extensive lineage research, hips, eyes, cardiac clearances. An "AKC" registration is not evidence of this.

Get prepared for parvo shots once a week for the first 12 weeks of each pups life. These dogs along with dobermans contract it very easily and can get it during the shots. The Rott was the only dog I have ever paid for, by the time he died at 9 weeks, we had $900 in him in 91'.

Throughout history, most cultures have used cats and dogs as a food source. It's only in recent history that they have been considered "pets' and become a taboo as a food source. A few hundred thousand hungry people in America could be fed by the dogs and cats that are euthanized everyday. It's only our classification of them as "pets" that stops us from feeding the hungry.

I can't for the life of me figure out why anybody would buy a purebred dog.
It is more gratifing to rescue a street dog and give him the hjelp he needs.
They are always grateful and will protect you and your house with everything they have because they remember what it was like on the street.
I currently have 4 dogs that all came to me sick and now they are a healthy pack. One survuved parvo, one came to me as a skeleton with mange, well actually 2 did, and the latest puppy just needed a lot of food. (As I was lifting up one of the ones that was a skeleton, he licked my face so I took him to the vet. The personality is the only important characteristic for me. I don't care what they look like.) I believe they are the only reason nobody has broken into my house or even comes close, remember I live in Mexico. It is a very dangerous place here. Everybody knows there are 4 big dogs in the house and they don't want to mess with them.
Street dogs are a lot smarter as well, if they weren't they would be dead.
Pure breads are bred for the color of their hair or a certain characteristic but very rarely for their intelligence. Most pure breds have genetic medical problems that will cost a ton of money but never be resolved.
Just go look for a street dog that has a good personality and he will always be there for you, also watch the Dog Whisperer so you can learn how to be the pack leader.

I know what you mean. My friend has 9 of them, or 11, I lost count, and I can't see any redeeming qualities in any of them.
They just make noise and fight with each other.
Like I said people look for certain characteristics and size is one of them.
Generally speaking the personality of a Chihuahua is either scared, skiddish or yappy.
Even if one came to me I would find it another home.
No rat dogs here.

Umm because they belong to no one and have no place to live. The city wouldn't like packs of wild dogs running all over the city so they try to keep the number down.
If I was around during legal American slavery, I wouldn't eat one of my family's slaves if I were hungary especially if he was if not loyal then obiedient. With a dog being loyal well atleast my dog would be. So maybe only after a couple of weeks with out food would I eat a dog.

Well the example I saw was between chickens and humans but the same can go for anything compared to the energy expended transfering proteins to energy by the amino acids because of the composition is similar less aminos are needed or less complicated ones are used breaking down the protein (human flesh).
