View Full Version : Newt and Hillary
OK, now every knows about Hillary's first attempt at health care reform and she's changed it a lot since then to make it much more like what Romney did in Mass. Newt Gingrich has even rubber stamped her proposal (which I can't seem to find a complete version of).
We've seen health insurance costs double since Dubya took office. In fact the only thing that has increased faster in that time frame is some property and gasoline.
So people don't seem to like the plan that Hillary, Newt or Romney propose so what is a better solution?
We can't allow costs to keep doubling every 7 years can we?
So if what The three people above propose is terrible, socialistic and like the Nazis then what's a better alternative?

More government is never the answer. Less government is. Let's stop forcing hospitals to care for people they know won't pay their bills and passing on the costs to those who do pay their bills.
Tort reform would help as well.
We have to got to get people off government dependence.

Remove the ability for people to sue doctors and hospitals - take it back to the days of paying doctors and hospitals a realistic cost - and you wont need health insurance at all - just like it was when I was growing up - no medicare or private health insurance even existed back then nor was it needed as doctors didnt need insurance for liability - only choice that makes any sense

Heath insurance should only pay for emergencies, unplanned cost, not your physicals and everyday medical costs.
It would be like car insurance paying for your oil change.
There are plenty of solutions that involve not extending the power of the federal government, however most Americans won't be interested in them.
Big Government is the only solution for everything to them.

Why have insurance at all? This is the paradigm that everyone has missed - for years we had no insurance whatsoever - didnt need it - until we started allowing the suing of everyone for everything.
Large medical costs - even surgery - didnt exist until the advent of insurance and doctor/nurse liability - you might have had to take a little payment plan for cancer(I had to) or in some cases the poorer were just given gifts/charity.
All of these insurance "scams" exist because we allow them to - from car insurance to health to pharm to anything they can think to insure - when I think back the only insurance we ever had growing up was house (for major stuff only) and you could buy car insurance if you really wanted to - but then we didnt have the lawyers back then either - they were used for "real" legal cases and not for spilling hot coffee on yourself while not paying attention and trying to drive without total attention to the "task"

I don't agree with that, group insurance plans have a great benefits, but should only be used for large unexpected things. Not every day and low cost items.
Either way it should be left up to the people via the free market to get what they want, and you are right it exists because we allow it to.
Tort reform is needed badly in this country, either that or make it legal to kill lawyers. You shouldn't be able to sue someone for millions/billions simply because you are dissatisfied with their product or service. No one put a gun to your head to buy/use it.
Insurance has allowed for some major medical breakthroughs. Without it could anyone afford a heart transplant or kemo? Of course not so the economics of researching these subjects wouldn't exist and certainly wouldn't lead to perfecting or improving them at the rate that we have.
I tend to believe that some insurance is needed but I've watched my high deductible HSA go from $200 to $400 a month in only a few years. I pay for the every day things out of pocket, x-rays for my little girl's foot, antibiotics, regular check ups and so on but I need the insurance in case some one in my family is seriously injured.
I think all plans should move more towards the HSA model but if those are doubling every 6 years then they're worthless as a long term solution.

As government becomes more and more involved in the health care system the costs will only go up. Imagine if you owned your own grocery store, and it were against the law for you to refuse to feed someone who wants food, even if they can't pay. You'd have to charge your paying customers more. We have to as responsible consumers demand that our health care providers stop passing the cost of deadbeats on to us and demand our politcians stop forcing them to do so.

We as a people certainly had no problem affording heart transplants or chemo prior to health ins - when I had cancer the total bill for the surgery and treatments for a month was under $10k - prior to health ins

The costs have more then doubled without the help of the government. Oil has done the same thing. Supply and demand does NOT account for this so what gives?

Government does increase cost, with their constant meddling. I.e. forcing health care providers to treat everyone, even those who cannot pay.
Oil prices go up because of the way commodities are traded on the open market, and again because of government regulation. Not saying deregulation will decrease cost, but there are times where a gallon of gas could be less and some sort of local or federal law makes it difficult to do so.
So many things go into how gas and oil are priced it gives me a headache trying to think about it. I am not saying I am a fan of the system, but even at 5 bucks a gallon, gas is incredibly cheap in my mind. It costs a fortune to get gas from oil in th ground to the pumps.
Personally I just want government out of it. Their constant meddling in business is what makes competition stale these days.
