The A-Bombs dropped on Japan kill thousands of innocent Japanese people. However, the number killed pales in comparison to the fire bombing raids on Tokyo.

But what you fail to realize is that is was not really an attack on innocent civilians, it was an effort to destroy their capacity to produce weapons to use against us. During the war, Japan industry was not always centrally located in big factories that would have made easy targets, especially after the battle at Iwo Jima. When the US was able to begin bombing the mainland of Japan, a lot of the manufacturing that was typically done in the factories was moved into residential areas in to small mom and pop type shops. This was an effort to minimize losses that could be incurred by a single bombing raid on a large factory.

The targeting of Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were as much an attack on Japans ability to produce weapons as much as anything else. It is unfortunate that so many innocent people were killed, but such is the price of war. And by all estimates, it was far less that the millions that would have most likely died if the United States had been forced to invade the mainland had the A-Bombs not worked or been available.

I never claimed my kids are in come high class private school. In fact, they attend a very small rural public school system that is too poor to offer many of the advanced classes offered by the larger schools in our state. We just do the best we can with what we have.

One of my obsessions is history especially as it pertains to WWII. I have read many articles, documents and books on the subject. The expressed purpose of the bombings was to reduce Japans ability to wage war. And to a point you are correct. Nobody lost any sleep that Japanese civilians were dying in the process. There was no sympathy for them from those involved in the Army Air Corp. However, if it had not been for the ability to reduce their manufacturing base to have a negative effect on their ability to wage war, the bombings would not have happened.

Thats right- I treated Slow as an equal on this board, and gave him back what he dished out.

I don't think that he understands that in a war you also do what you can to break the "will of the people" to continue the fight. Part of that involves attacks on the enemies supply lines and manufacturing capabilities which are usually being done by civilians. In the process a lot of civilians get killed.

The civilians can always refuse to go to work but of course they would probably suffer a penalty for doing so.

Kind of hard to fight a war when the populace doesn't support the effort or the politicians won't get the hell out of the way.
